Mistinarperadnacles Hai Draco, or Mist for short, is an old female Red Dragon, and a secondary villain in the Finder's Stone trilogy set in the Forgotten Realms. She fought the heroes Alias and Dragonbait before begrudgingly helping them in the battle against the avatar of Moander, which resulted in the destruction of both Mist and the avatar.
Description[]
Mist is both a typical and atypical specimen of the red dragon species. Physically she is as formidable as any dragon of her age, having a massive lenght of 300 feet (90 meters) from head to the tip of her tail. But psychologically she is quite unusual.
Her appearance is common for her species. Her drab, crimson scales darken to a purpleish hue near her coin and gem covered belly. Her mouth is filled with teeth the size of swords, her yellow eyes are huge and she has fleshy whiskers under her chin.
Personality[]
Like all red dragons, Mist is greedy and narcissistic, and she prefers spending her time alone with her treasure hoard. She is not, however, casually cruel and vicious. Mist is more refined than that, and a bit naive regarding her outlook on life. She finds burning villages for fun to be dull. She also has an unusual taste in treasure. Besides the usual gold coins and jewelry, Mist is interested in music and stories. In fact, she kidnapped and held hostage the halfling bard, Olive Ruskettle, to entertain her under threat of becoming her next meal if she refused.
After treasures of all kinds, Mist's primary motivation is to assure herself of a steady diet of warm-blooded prey. While she dines on animals like Cows and Horses most of the time, she looks forward to adventurers coming to her lair seeking honorable combat or her treasure. Mist likes to play with her human foes, often chatting with adventurers before eating them.
Mist shares her mountain lair with a flock of ravens that act as sentries for her.
History[]
Mist's first known activity was taking part in a flight of dragons that descended on Yulash and Shadowdale many years ago. While she had nothing to do with the death of Sylune Silverhand, she did come to the realisation that wanton destruction was not her style.
After leaving the flight, Mist settled in the Storm Horn mountains west of Cormyr. There she battled and defeated a younger male dragon for his lair. From this locale, Mist preyed on the merchant caravans from Suzail to Waymoot, killing at least one adventuring party along the way.
From one caravan, Mist plucked the bard Olive Ruskettle, whom Mist allowed to live in a cage in her lair for as long as she could keep the dragon entertained with her singing. Olive was then rescued by Alias, the swordswoman with the azure bonds. She managed to defeat Mist in a challenge called Feint of Honor, an ancient ritual combat of subdual that all dragons follow regardless of alignment.
Enraged by her defeat at the hands of the swordswoman, Mist vowed to destroy her, code or no. First, she scared Giogioni Wyvernspur into revealing where Alias was headed, and although she never met Alias again, she did, however, find Olive. The bard was then in the company of Dragonbait, the Saurial paladin, who challenged Mist to another Feint of Honor.
The pair managed to subdue the dragon, and the prize of their victory was Mist's aid in confronting the avatar of Moander the Darkbringer. After a chase sequence, Mist and the heroes fought the giant avatar in a spectacular battle over the city of Westgate. Mist was taking a beating from Moander's tentacles until she breathed fire into the hollow form of Moander's avatar. As Moander is the god of rot and decay, his physical avatar takes the form of a giant blob of rotting vegetation that emits flammable gas, and it was this gas that Mist's breath weapon ignited. The resulting explosion destroyed both the avatar and the dragon.
10 years later, the skull of Mist somehow entered in possession of Victor Dhostar (also known as The Faceless), leader of the Night Masks in Westgate. Victor used magic to animate the skull and interrogate the dragon's spirit about everything she knows regarding Alias and Dragonbait and how to eliminate them. The skull seemed to have been destroyed later, however.
