| ~ Mistress 9 to Hotaru. |
Mistress 9, also known as the Sovereign of Silence, Dark Messiah, and the Messiah of Silence is one of two main antagonists (alongside Doctor Tomoe/Germatoid) in Sailor Moon S.
She is an evil spiritual and extraterrestrial being hailing from a parallel dimension, a dark and desolate realm. Her primary objective is to bring about the destruction of the universe by unleashing the Silence, a force of complete and utter annihilation. In her quest to achieve this, she seeks to inhabit a human body, and she finds a perfect vessel in the form of Hotaru Tomoe, a young girl with extraordinary spiritual potential. By merging with Hotaru, she is able to enter the world of humans during the twenty-first century, hiding within her host and using Hotaru’s body as a means to carry out her dark plans.
Mistress 9's true form is not directly visible to the people around her for much of the series. Instead, she manifests through Hotaru's body, gradually taking control of it and using Hotaru's powers for her own ends. However, her possession of Hotaru is not always complete; at times, Hotaru's true self can break through, though this is increasingly rare as Mistress 9’s influence grows stronger.
She serves Pharaoh 90, an even more powerful entity from her dimension, who seeks to open a gateway to Earth and use its energy to further his own apocalyptic goals. Mistress 9’s role in this plan is to help bring Pharaoh 90 into the human world by utilizing the energy of human souls, and she does this by working from the shadows, manipulating others, and fostering chaos is meant to pave the way for the end of all things. She is one of Sailor Saturn's two arch-nemesis (alongside Germatoid).
In Japanese, she was voiced by Yūko Minaguchi in the original anime and Yukiyo Fujii in Crystal. In English, she was voiced by Jen Gould and Christine Marie Cabanos.
Appearance[]
While not fully awakened, she simply took control of Hotaru Tomoe's adolescent body. She appeared to wear a purple long-sleeved top with an outer frill along the arms, and a very long ruffled light lavender skirt. The top was topped with a lavender collar in the same shade and design as the skirt, and had black lines meeting at a hole near the neck of the shirt, where a black star (the symbol for the Death Busters) was visible. Most notably, there appeared to be a rather oversized red bow on the front of the waist of her dress. In her fully awakened form, she wore her very long black hair straight and loose down her back, with black eyes wearing a long blue dress with bead straps.
Personality[]
She is cold, manipulative, power-hungry, highly intelligent, calculating, and often shows a complete lack of empathy toward others. Her primary motivation is to bring about the "Silence," a state of absolute destruction and emptiness. She possesses a twisted sense of superiority, often looking down on others and treating them as mere pawns in her larger schemes. Her manipulation of others is a significant part of her personality, particularly in her use of the inner senshi and others to further her goals. She is a master manipulator. She is skilled at reading people and using their desires and weaknesses against them. Throughout the Sailor Moon saga, she manipulates Hotaru Tomoe, turning her into a vessel for destruction, and she also uses the inner Sailor Senshi to achieve her ends. She is adept at presenting a false front, allowing her to gain the trust of others while secretly working against them. She exudes an air of superiority. She believes that her understanding of the universe and her power grants her the right to reshape the world as she sees fit. This arrogance makes her dismissive of human life and other beings. She views herself as above petty emotions and cares little for the suffering of others, seeing them merely as tools to be discarded once they no longer serve her purpose. Her belief in her own superiority is most evident in her treatment of those she manipulates, such as Hotaru, whom she uses as a mere vessel, and the Sailor Senshi, whom she sees as insignificant obstacles.
She displays a deep emotional detachment, particularly when it comes to the suffering of others. This coldness is indicative of her alien nature, as she is fundamentally disconnected from human emotions. She does not feel compassion, empathy, or guilt, and instead operates purely from a logical, if brutal, standpoint. Her focus is solely on her mission to bring about the Silence, which she views as the ultimate form of peace. While Mistress 9 is calculating and precise in her actions, she is also deeply sadistic. She takes pleasure in inflicting pain and chaos, particularly when it comes to the psychological torment of her victims. She enjoys controlling Hotaru Tomoe’s body, gradually erasing Hotaru’s humanity and twisting her mind. She also delights in tormenting the Sailor Senshi and using their weaknesses against them. Her cruelty is not just physical; she is also capable of manipulating the emotions of those around her, often causing them to doubt themselves and spiral into despair. She is utterly obsessed with her mission to bring about the Silence. Her singular focus on achieving this goal drives her to push beyond all moral boundaries. She does not hesitate to sacrifice those around her, including her host Hotaru, if it serves her purpose. This obsessive drive makes her a dangerous and relentless foe, as she will stop at nothing to see her plans come to fruition, regardless of the cost.
Despite her cold and ruthless exterior, Mistress 9’s connection to Hotaru Tomoe is one of tragic duality. While Mistress 9 seeks to use Hotaru’s body as a vessel for destruction, Hotaru’s spirit is not completely erased. This conflict between the human girl and the alien spirit creates an interesting dynamic where, occasionally, traces of Hotaru's original self emerge, struggling to break free from Mistress 9's influence. These moments of conflict reveal a more vulnerable side to Mistress 9, showing that her actions are, in some ways, influenced by her parasitic bond with Hotaru.
Biography[]
Originating from the "Tau Ceti Star System", spawned from the essence of Pharaoh 90, the Daimon Egg containing Mistress 9 was implanted by Professor Tomoe in the cybernetically modified body of his revived daughter Hotaru. As a result, Hotaru's body was frail and prone to seizures due to Mistress 9 momentarily taking over her host to relay orders to her subordinates.
But once ready to fulfill her mission, Mistress 9 takes complete control and altered Hotaru's body structure to an adult-like appearance while taking Chibiusa's Legendary Silver Crystal for her use in summoning Pharaoh 90 to Earth.
But as she needed to leave her host body to rejoin her creator to complete the ritual, Mistress 9 found Hotaru keeping her from leaving her body. But ultimately, Mistress 9 succeeds in ripping out of her host and melting back into Pharaoh 90's being when he begins to flood into Earth. But Hotaru resurrects as Sailor Saturn, driving Pharaoh 90 back to his galaxy white Sailor Pluto sealing the portal behind him.
Sailor Moon S[]
Tomoe's daughter Hotaru was chosen to be the one possessed by Mistress 9, who then commanded him to extract Pure Hearts to find the Purity Chalice so she could awaken her master, Pharaoh 90. Once Sailor Moon got the Purity Chalice, Mistress 9 commanded Tomoe to extract Pure Hearts to feed to her. Eventually, Kaorinite brought her Rini, and she ate her Pure Heart and awakened in her true form. She then killed Kaorinite with a lightning bolt, as she did not need her anymore. She sent Tomoe after Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus when they entered, resulting in Germatoid leaving Tomoe and being killed by Sailor Uranus.
Mistress 9 tricked Sailor Moon and the un-possessed Doctor Tomoe into giving her the Purity Chalice, and she used it to summon Pharaoh 90, destroying the Purity Chalice. However, Hotaru was able to fight her from within, and overpowered her with her memories of her father and Rini, destroying her completely.
