Biography[]
Agent Mitchell Loeb first appeared "In Which We Meet Mr. Jones" leading an FBI special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team operation in Weymouth, Massachusetts. They were tracking a cargo truck, only to discover it filled with plush bears, meaning their target tricked them.
At the Boston FBI office, Phillip Broyles receives a briefing from Mitchell Loeb, who led the operation. Loeb was recently transferred to the Boston office after working abroad in Europe. He gives Broyles a dossier on Joseph Smith, who has a science background and has been traveling back and forth to Budapest. He also worked for the shipping company that handled the cargo container that Loeb was tracking; Loeb opines that Smith switched the contents of the containers. Suddenly, Loeb grabbed his chest and falls to the floor. Soon in the emergency room, the doctor opens Loeb's chest and looks at his heart seeing a large parasite that pulses with every heartbeat around it.
Broyles had the Fringe Division find a way to save his friend. Olivia Dunham had to talk to Dr. David Robert Jones (Jared Harris), a biochemist held incommunicado in Frankfurt, Germany. Problems arise when Jones demands to speak to a colleague of his in exchange, who is unfortunately killed in a raid set up by Broyles. Walter, however, devises a way to wire Peter into the dead man's brain, enabling Peter to speak on his behalf. The procedure is successful and the parasite is removed. However, it turns out that the parasite was orchestrated by Loeb and his wife to get the information Peter extracted from the late Smith: Little Hill, where Jones is to be transported to.
In "The Equation", Joanne Ostler was hired by Mitchell Loeb to find someone who can complete a formula for a special technique for David Robert Jones. She managed to kidnap Ben Stockton using flashing lights on his father, and Ben was successful in finishing the titular equation. The result was a way to allow things to pass through solid matter. No longer having use for her, Loeb shot and killed Ostler.
Using the technology Ostler had Ben decipher, Loeb led a bank robbery in "Safe" at the Philadelphia Mutual Savings Bank. He and a group of men made the wall possible to walk through and stole a safe deposit box numbered 610. However, when the wall resolidified, one of the men, Raul Lugo, go stuck. Loeb killed him to prevent him from talking. As a reward for his success, Jones had his lawyer, Salman Kohl, give him another $100,000.
Continuing the plan, Loeb and his men went to Little Hill Field (an airstrip) and constructed a strange, ring-shaped device. After triangulating certain coordinates, they successfully teleported Jones from his prison cell in Frankfurt, Germany to Little Hill. While this happened, Olivia was kidnapped.
Olivia managed to escape in "Bound" with a sample from a lab warehouse. At that same time, Loeb unleashes a deadly kind of oversized cold virus into water that doctors Miles Kinberg and Russell Simon drank. The virus became as big as a slug and crawled out of their mouths once they were dead. The motive for murders is unknown, but it was likely to stop an upcoming epidemic that ZFT could use to its advantage. One Olivia showed Mitchell that his wife was dead (she killed her in a struggle), he confessed to the murders but said that they kidnapped her only to help her. Loeb angrily told Olivia about "two sides" and that he was trying to save her. Loeb was then taken into custody for his crimes.
In "Ability", Olivia meets with shackled Mitchell Loeb at a military installation. She said she knew that he and Jones were working together and that he must know Jones's location. Loeb refuses to cooperate even when Olivia threatened to have him transferred to a more dangerous prison. Instead, he told her it doesn't matter whether she finds Jones because he's just a part of the army - that 'what was written will come to pass', and nothing Olivia does can change that.
Legacy[]
In the series finale, Olivia and Walter used the supersized cold virus that Loeb used to kill Kinberg and Simon against the Observers.
