Mohamed Atta is the main antagonist in the 2004 historical film The Hamburg Cell. He is based on the real life ringleader and September 11th hijacker of the same name.
He was played by Maral Kamel.
Biography[]
In the 1990s, Mohamed Atta is studying at the Technical University of Hamburg in Germany. Sometime later, he become involved with the al-Qutb mosque. Atta, and three of his classmates, Ramzi Bin Al Shib, Marwan Al Shehhi, and Ziad Jarrah, form the Hamburg Cell in which they feel unified in their opposition to modernization and western culture. In the film, Atta states that "People are focusing too much on cars and money and houses, and now they don't believe in God anymore". Atta then claims that he has no place in the modern world, which he feels is corrupting people.
Then, Atta goes to his home country of Egypt, visiting his parents for the last time. His father tells him to continue with his studies in college. Atta then joins up with Al Shehhi, Jarrah, and Al Shib in Al-Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan. Their commander, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, devises a plan that involves Atta, Al Shehhi, and Jarrah, to hijack planes and crash them into landmarks in America, in suicide missions.
Atta is assigned to be a hijacker pilot in the plot, then he returns to Germany with Al Shehhi and Jarrah and begins making their way through immigration to America.
Later, Atta and Al Shehhi train as pilots in the flight schools in Venice, Florida. Atta becomes very critical of Jarrah, as he feels that the latter is enjoying his time "blending in" and is annoyed that Jarrah has a girlfriend, concerning Atta that Jarrah would back out of the plot. In the summer of 2001, Atta then travels to Spain for one final meeting with Ramzi Bin Al Shib, the two discuss the targets the hijacker pilots will strike.
In early September 2001, Atta flies from Florida and has a final meeting with Hani Hanjour, the hijacker pilot who will crash American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon. Atta then makes one final destination to meet up with hijacker Abdulaziz Al Omari, who will help Atta hijack American Airlines Flight 11. On his last night, Atta and Al Omari start traveling through Massachusets and then drive to Portland, Maine. They then board a Colgan Air Flight to Boston Logan Airport. Then, Atta, Al Omari, and three other hijackers board American Airlines Flight 11, traveling from Boston to Los Angeles. Then, at 8:46 a.m., Atta intentionally crashes American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. He kills everyone on board the plane including himself, and hundreds are killed in the impact zone. The Impact of the Boeing 767-200 operating as American Airlines Flight 11 was the first attack of the day. The crash and resulting fire led to the collapse of the North Tower at 10:28 a.m., resulting in around 1600 fatalities in the tower and on the ground.
