Molly Murchins: It would be, dear, except for one thing—Prescott is not their accomplice. I am.
Kevin McCallister: (gasps) You're—you're the inside man?
Molly Murchins: I'm afraid so.
[Vera and Marv shows up]
Marv Murchins: Hey, Mom. We're here. Oh, yeah, yeah.
Kevin McCallister: (shocked) "Mom"? He's your son?
Molly Murchins: I told you he was a handful. [grabs Kevin]
Kevin McCallister: Aah! Hey!
Molly Murchins: Oh! Now, come on.
Kevin McCallister: Get off of me!
~ Molly reveals herself as the Inside Man. She also reveals her true nature and the fact that she's Marv's mother.

Molly Murchins is the main antagonist of the 2002 comedy film, Home Alone 4: Taking Back The House, the non-canon's fourth installment in the Home Alone franchise.

She is the former maid of Peter McCallister and Natalie, the mother of Marv Murchins, the mother-in-law of Vera Murchins, and the former friend turned arch-nemesis of Kevin McCallister.

She was portrayed by Barbara Babcock, who also portrayed Rosemary Taylor in Shear Madness.

Personality[]

Molly initially appears to be friendly and helpful, hiding her true nature. However, Molly is a cunning and manipulative liar once she reveals herself as Marv and Vera's accomplice.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Much of Molly's background was unknown, aside from her claiming that her son, Marv, was a real handful in his childhood. Marv would grow up to become a criminal and commit several burglaries with his partner-in-crime, Harry Lyme, over the years. However, they ended up being scuppered by a young boy named Kevin McCallister. Later, Marv broke off his partnership with Harry, and he met and married another criminal named Vera. Molly went into partnership with Marv and Vera and they plotted to kidnap the Prince of the Royal Family, and Molly became employed by Natalie and began working as a maid at her house, where the Royal Family were due to visit. Ironically enough, Natalie was in a relationship with a soon-to-be divorced Peter McCallister, who was the father of Kevin.

Home Alone 4: Taking Back The House[]

Kevin arrived at Natalie's house a few days before Christmas Day, as he was invited by his father. Natalie called on Molly and asked her to get Kevin's room ready for him, which she did. The following morning, Molly made Kevin breakfast and later headed out, telling the butler, Prescott, to go easy on him.

While Molly was out, Marv and Vera (who had been watching the mansion overnight) gained access to the property and began scouting it out. Unbeknownst to them, they had been spotted by Kevin who lured them into a bathroom and flooded the place, causing the pair to be washed away downstairs and into the main lobby. Marv was shocked to spot Kevin, and after introducing Kevin and Vera to each other, the couple made their exit. Natalie and Peter did not believe Kevin's story, and Prescott denied there being any burglars, as he was asleep during the incident.

Due to Prescott's shady nature, Kevin suspected him as the inside man to Marv and Vera, and even shared his concerns with Molly. However, she put it down to an "overactive imagination." During this discussion, Molly mentioned having a son herself, and how he was a "real handful" at Kevin's age.

On Christmas Eve, the Royals were due to arrive, and Marv and Vera (disguised as waiters) began to set up a trap in Kevin's room to kidnap the prince, although it did not go so well as Kevin again interrupted their plans. During this chaos, Natalie and Peter arrived back from the airport and informed Molly that the Royals' trip had been delayed, due to the weather, much to Molly's disappointment. Natalie and Peter used the opportunity to announce their engagement, but it was interrupted when Kevin stormed into the room and knocked people over in an attempt to evade Marv and Vera, who made their escape.

On Christmas morning, Natalie and Peter headed off to collect the Royals, leaving Kevin and Prescott alone. Kevin locked Prescott in the wine cellar, and warned Molly that the kidnappers were coming and that he had locked their accomplice in the basement. However, Molly revealed to Kevin that she was the accomplice and not Prescott, much to Kevin's shock. Marv and Vera then made their entrance, with Marv addressing Molly as his mother, a double shock to Kevin. Molly then took Kevin away and locked him in the wine cellar with Prescott.

Kevin attempted to contact his mother, Kate, to alert her to the situation, but the battery on Prescott's phone died. Kate phoned up the house and Molly answered it, and lied that Kevin was away with Peter and Natalie. Molly hung up and informed Marv and Vera that Kevin tried to alert his mother, and when Marv asked Molly if he should show Kevin "who is boss", Molly ordered Marv to sit down, as she was the boss and not him. Marv quieted down, and he did as he was told, confirming to Vera that he wasn't in charge after all.

Kevin managed to escape the wine cellar by riding the dumbwaiter and began using traps he set up earlier that morning to take down the trio. Molly ended up trapped in a lift, leaving it to Marv and Vera to try and stop Kevin, although they failed and ended up being knocked unconscious. As Kevin stood over the pair of them in victory, Molly snuck up behind Kevin and prepared to strike him with a frying pan, but she was stopped by Prescott, who knocked her unconscious with a serving tray.

Molly was taken into custody by the police, along with her son and daughter-in-law.

Trivia[]

  • Even though Molly is Marv's mother, she was never mentioned by him in the first two films, as the fourth film is a loose sequel to the first two.
  • Viewers who have never seen the film get tricked into thinking that Molly is good, and that Prescott is bad. However, it's really the other way around.
  • If not counting Harry's friendly interaction with Kevin's father in the first film, Molly is the only twist villain in the Home Alone film series.
