Mona Sax is a supporting character in the 2001 video game Max Payne and the deuteragonist in the 2003 sequel Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. She is a contract assassin who operates in New York City, who later gets romantically involved with Max Payne.

She was voiced by Julia Murney and performed by Carol Kiriakos in the first game. In Max Payne 2, she was voiced by Wendy Hoopes and performed by Kathy Tong.

Background[]

Mona Sax is a hired assassin and twin sister of Lisa Punchinello, Angelo Punchinello's wife. Mona began to have a mortal hatred for Angelo, precisely because Angelo beat and abused Lisa every day, and this made her nickname him "Sadistic Wife Beater".

After a while, Mona was hired by Aesir Corporation to do Nicole Horne's dirty work.

Max Payne (2001)[]

During the events of the Valkyr Case, Mona was sent to kill Jack Lupino at the Ragna Rock nightclub, but Max Payne arrived first, who obtained information from Vinnie Gognitti about Jack's whereabouts. And then, Mona sees Max shooting Jack with multiple shots and she introduces herself to Max, and states that everyone has their opposite path, after a conversation, Mona and Max have a drink, but Mona had drugged Max's drink, leaving him unconscious, and then after that, Mona leaves for Punchinello's manor to murder Angelo.

Mona was discovered by one of Angelo's soldiers who took her to a torture room on the manor's basement. After realizing that Lisa was killed, Mona flees the scene, killing Angelo's torturers and henchmen in the basement, leaving the door open for Max. After Max discovers that Mona was at the mansion, he decides to kill Angelo, but Nicole Horne's killers arrives and kill Angelo.

Mona reappears again to Max in the elevator of the Aesir Corporation building, Nicole orders Mona to kill Max, but Mona refuses because she doesn't kill "good guys" like Max, Mona spots Nicole's henchmen, and ends up being shot in the head, falling to the ground . After Max kills the henchmen, the elevator doors open, and Mona's body is no longer there, indicating that she escaped.

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne[]

Two years pass after the events of the Valkyrie case, Mona is now hired by Alfred Woden, the leader of the Inner Circle who helped Max neutralize Nicole Horne, her mission was to assassinate Vladimir Lem, the leader of the Russian Mob and former member of the Inner Circle for treason against Woden, however, Mona ends up hitting Vlad's arm, leaving him injured. Max is reunited with Mona for the third time in the elevator at Vlad's warehouse as she kills three cleaners, Mona then flees the scene because of the police arriving.

After the events at the warehouse, Chief Lieutenant Jim Bravura informs Max and his partner Valerie Winterson that Mona is suspected of murdering Senator Sebastian Gate, Winterson is tasked with investigating the Sebastian Gate case, while Max is in charge of the Cleaner Case. Max returns to his apartment after the shooting at Vodka, Vlad's restaurant. Max starts having nightmares about Mona, because Max is afraid of revealing his secrets about Mona to the NYPD.

Max wakes up to the knocking on his door, it was Mona and reveals to Max that he is in danger, as is Mona. However, Max claims that there is no "Us", as Mona is a murder suspect and needs to be taken to the police station, but a sniper appears in the window on the other side of Max's apartment, causing Mona to flee. After the shooting at his apartment, Max finds a phone number that Mona had left in her office, Mona arranges a meeting for Max at the old Address Unknown funhouse, Max finds Mona taking a shower, and they plan to go to the Upper East Side building to meet with a member of the Inner Circle, Corcoran.

When they arrive, the cleaners have entered and killed the Inner Circle members one by one, including Corcoran. As soon as Max takes the elevator down to the ground floor, the New York police appear at the scene, and Winterson witnesses Max helping Mona. She is arrested and Max ends up getting suspended for helping Mona, at the police station, Max and Mona start arguing, Mona tells Max to call Alfred Woden. After Max tries to call Alfred Woden, the sound of an explosion appears in the police station, it was the cleaners going after Mona, Mona manages to escape from prison and escapes to her hiding place.

Max tries to go after her, but she had run away, Vladimir Lem appears in his car, and takes Max to Address Unknown's Funhouse, where Mona's hiding place was, as soon as Max arrives, he tries to talk to Mona, and she asks why that Max is so afraid, but they end up having a loving relationship. After a kiss, the cleaners discover Mona's hiding place, and go after her and Max, as soon as they go to Mona's secret room, Max ends up falling from the platform, as the screws came loose, so Mona on her own decides to get her weapons.

As soon as she grabs her weapons, Mona defends Max from the cleaners, when the cleaners run away, Max jumps into the van and takes him to the Castling Construction Site. Max informs Mona that he is at the construction site, as soon as Mona arrives, she informs Max that he is in the wrong place and needs to go to a well-positioned place. Max informs Mona that he needs to call the police after he finds a bunch of dead bodies, Mona denies this and tells Max to go to hell and she calls him a "bastard", Mona hears an explosion and questions what is happening, and Max responds that the building is exploding because of the explosives.

Mona sees Max jumping from the window and falls, but a piece of wood falls on top of him, Mona sees the cleaners and starts shooting with her sniper rifle, Max frees himself and Mona defends Max until he reaches the other side of the building. As soon as Mona and Max reach the other side, she hears sirens in the distance, Mona is angry because Max called the police to the construction site, Mona defends Max from the cleaners and commandos, and decides on the meeting place, as soon as she arrives at the meeting place, Winterson appears in the shadows pointing his gun at Mona, Max defends Mona from Winterson, when she is about to shoot Mona, Max fires his gun at his own police partner, Winterson.

Max orders Mona to flee the scene, and Winterson, before her death, shoots Max twice, leaving him injured. Mona was reported missing, after a coma in the hospital, Max runs away from the hospital because the cleaners were going after him, Max tries to look for Mona, but is nowhere to be found.

During a conversation with Alfred Woden, Woden reveals to Max that Vladimir Lem was behind all the actions, Max then decides to go to Vlad's restaurant, but what he finds is a painting with a drawing of Captain Baseball Bat Boy's costume indicating that he is after Vinnie Gognitti, Max then finds a message from Winterson on Vlad's phone, but Max wastes no time and goes after Vinnie, as soon as he saves Vinnie from Vladimir's men, Max decides to take him to Mona, as she knows defuse the bomb that is trapped in Gognitti's costume.

Mona arrives on the scene and sees Vladimir Lem with his sniper rifle pressing the bomb detonator button on Vinnie's costume, killing him. Mona finds the remains of Vinnie Gognitti, and mourns Gognitti, Mona finds Max injured on the floor, and finally awakens him, and they flee the scene and leave for Woden's mansion, where Vlad is about to kill Alfred.

Death[]

Mona and Max got separated, and they meet at courtyard, Mona hits Max with her pistol and orders them to lower the weapons, Mona reveals that she worked for Alfred Woden to kill both Max Payne and Vladimir Lem, but Mona cannot kill Max because of their relationship, Vlad appears in the shadows and shoots Mona, leaving her seriously injured. Woden appears and regrets everything that happened, Woden, frustrated with Vlad, attacks him, but Vlad shoots Alfred multiple times, killing him.

Max then attacks Vladimir and manages to disarm him, after Max manages to kill Vlad and his soldiers, Max goes to Mona, but Mona ends up dying from her injuries, Max gives her the last kiss as a farewell.

Personality[]

Mona Sax is a mysterious woman, hired assassin and cold-blooded. At first, Mona began to have a mortal hatred for Angelo Punchinello for beating and abusing his own wife, when she started to become a hired assassin, Mona became colder and more calculating.

Mona is also manipulative, during her first meeting with Max, she starts making small talk with Max, and ends up spiking Max's drink, leaving him unconscious. During their second meeting at the Aesir Corporation building, she reveals that she doesn't kill nice guys like Max, as she has a certain crush on Max. During the Cleaner Case, Mona began to develop a romantic relationship with Max, when Mona questions Max why he is so afraid, Mona and Max begin to kiss.

In a call message left by Mona on Alfred Woden's phone, she reveals that she has started to go mad about him. Before she died, Mona told Max that she just became a damsel in distress.

  • Julia K. Murney, Mona's voice actress, also voiced the police dispatch in Max Payne, but later she voiced Lady Amelia from TV Show "Lords and Ladies".
  • Mona reappears as a playable character in Max Payne 3 Multiplayer's Classic Character Pack DLC alongside with: Vinnie Gognitti, Nicole Horne, Jack Lupino, Vladimir Lem and Alfred Woden
