Monaghan Bakharov is the overarching antagonist of the novel and OVA series Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and its sequel movie Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative. He is a politician within the Republic of Zeon who is responsible for funding The Sleeves and for the project that created Full Frontal, for the purpose of maintaining the Republic of Zeon's autonomy from the Earth Federation.
He was voiced by Masaki Terasoma.
History[]
Monaghan Bakharov was the son of Darcia Bakharov, Prime Minister of the Republic of Zeon, and served as the Republic's Minister of Defense/Foreign Affairs. However, Monaghan secretly harbored nationalist views and desired to bring Zeon back to its former glory. In pursuit of this, Monaghan financed a oversaw to create a Cyber-Newtype clone of Char Aznable, which eventually produced Full Frontal, and helped form The Sleeves from Neo Zeon remnants. All this was to retain the Republic of Zeon's autonomy by attempting to topple the Earth Federation.
Some time after the Sleeves were disbanded, Monaghan masterminded a military operation to obtain the Earth Federation's prototype RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenix. The contingent was led by Zoltan Akkanen, a failed Cyber-Newtype clone of Char produced by the same project that created Full Frontal, and modified their Mobile Suits to look like the suits of the Sleeves in order to elude suspicion from the Federation by posing as remnants of the Third Neo Zeon.
Later on, Monaghan gives orders to Erika Yugo to abandon ship and allow the Earth Federation Forces to destroy their forces to cover up any involvement by the Republic of Zeon. However, Zoltan walks in on the call and, upon discovering Erika's treachery, executes her.
After Zoltan is killed by Jona Basta, Monaghan has a call with Mineva Lao Zabi to discuss what happened. Monaghan attempts to cover up his involvement, but Mineva voices her suspicions. However, because she does not have enough evidence to convict Monaghan he and the other corrupt elements within the Republic of Zeon are able to go free.
Trivia[]
- While Monaghan is an important figure in the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn novel, he is entirely absent from the OVA series adapted from it. However, he does appear in the Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative movie serving as a sequel to the work.
