Monarchs (alternatively translated as Sovereigns) are the main antagonists of the dark fantasy Korean manhwa, and light novel series Solo Leveling. They are the creation of the Absolute Being that were born with the primary reason to cause chaos and are the archenemies of the other creations of the Absolute Being, the Rulers.

Personalities[]

The Absolute Being created monarchs with the purpose to end the world while opposing the Rulers. All Monarchs are ruthless, sadistic, power-hungry, and warmonger beings with little to no esteem for other species, specifically for humanity. The Shadow Monarch, although being equally cold, was an exception. He had devotion for lives and seeked for piece for millenas while also being the most powerful of the Monarchs, before Sung Jinwoo's existence.

History[]

Origin[]

In the ancient era, the Absolute Being divided light and darkness, forming Rulers and Monarchs. Born with conflicting purposes, they waged a destructive war. After the Absolute Being's demise, Rulers harnessed his power to capture Monarch Legia, shifting the war's dynamics. Seeking assistance, Shadow Monarch Ashborn allied with the Monarchs, but his immense power instilled fear. Despite stabilizing the conflict, Ashborn faced betrayal from Monarchs Rakan and Baran. Though he triumphed, his shadow army suffered. Retaliating against Baran, Ashborn went into hiding, allowing Rulers to win. Later, he returned, gaining acceptance from Monarch Antares. Centuries passed; the Monarchs sought to conquer, while the Rulers aimed to save humanity. Using the Cup of Reincarnation, the Rulers attempted to alter fate, but the cycle persisted, with the human world destined for destruction, irrespective of temporal interventions.

Jeju Island Arc[]

In present time, a few days after successfully clearing the S-Rank Gate on Jeju Island, Rakan detected remnants of the Shadow Monarch's influence there. Concerned, he journeyed to Jeju to investigate. On his way, he encountered the Frost Monarch, who had also sensed Ashborn's presence. Together, they decided it was the opportune moment to initiate another battle against the Rulers once again.

Japan Crisis Arc[]

Months after the Jeju Island Raid, the Rulers presented Legia with an escape route by opening an S-Rank Gate in Tokyo. However, his chance for freedom was abruptly ended when Sung Jin-Woo, the vessel of the Shadow Monarch, killed him. Concurrently, the Monarchs began their pursuit of the Rulers in the human world, resulting in the death of Christopher Reed, America's strongest hunter and one of the seven vessels of the Rulers.

More months later post the Jeju Island Raid, the Rulers aided Legia in fleeing by activating an S-Rank Gate located in Tokyo. Regardless, the Shadow Monarch successor swiftly ended Legia's chance for survival by killing him. Concurrently, the Monarchs initiated their pursuit of the Rulers in the human world, where Christopher Reed, the strongest hunter in America and one of the seven vessels of the Rulers lost his life in his confrontation against three of the monarchs.

International Guild Conference Arc[]

Days prior the International Guild occured, the monarchs moved on and killed their next target on their list on the Ruler's vessel, the strongest Brazil hunter, Jonas.

Weaknesses[]

Monarchs cannot enter the human world without inhabiting a human body, due to not having a physical form just like the Rulers. The difference when possessing their human hosts in contrasts to their archenemies is that they can completely take over their body, while Rulers cannot. However, there is still a disavantage at this, and that is they lose their eternal life, making them now a mortal since they are now basically humans.
