The Monions are minor antagonists in the animated comedy web series, Annoying Orange, serving as major antagonists of the promotional collaboration episode for Illumination's Despicable Me 2, "Despicable Me Too", and the titular subjects of the episode, "Monions!".
They are a dimwitted race of onions who just like characters they are based off and their purple selves follow whichever master they consider the most evil or for them also whoever makes the most people cry.
In their first appearance, they were all voiced by the series' creator Dane Boedigheimer, who also voices Pear-asite, Mighty Mega Mecha Apple, and Annoying Orange, and many more.
In their reappearance in the episode "Monions", they were voiced by Dane Boedigheimer, Shannon Jones, and Jess Lizama.
Appearance[]
In the official Despicable Me 2 promotion, the Monions were small, purple-tinted red onions with silver goggles and legless blue denim jeans with two thick black buttons on the front. In this design, the Monions closely resemble the Purple Minions from the same film the episodes were promoting.
In the episode "Monions!", the Monions were redesigned into more yellowish onions wearing overalls instead of jeans, and with bronze-colored goggles over their eyes instead of silver. The Monions were also given more varied appearances, with two Monions with two eyes that are short and tall, and one medium-sized Monion with only one eye. In these designs, the Monions now better resemble the normal Minions from the Despicable Me franchise.
Biography[]
Despicable Me Too[]
While Pear-asite is busy fighting Secret Agent Orange, he suddenly gets a banana peel thrown in his face that causes him to be thrown back into a wall, after which Dr. Apefruit and Mighty Mega Mecha Apple break into his base and threaten him to hand over the Leaning Tower of Pizza, whom he himself stole. Angered by the audacity of the rival supervillains planning to ruin his own evil scheme, Pear-asite decides to call out to his army of Monions to take care of them and Orange. A group of Monions immediately proceed to gang up on Dr. Apefruit and start attacking him, much to his horror.
Mighty Mega Mecha Apple attempts to fight back against the Monions, blasting his energy beam at one of them that instantly blows it up before grabbing another and throwing it away. However, a larger group of Monions manage to completely swarm around Mighty Mega Mecha Apple, completely overwhelming him too much to be able to fight.
Four more Monions then surround Orange, prompting Pear-asite to ask him if he has any last words, to which Orange annoys him before calling out to his Marshminions for backup. A large swarm of Marshminions then proceed to show up and scare off all of Pear-asite's Monions, leaving him completely defenseless.
Monions![]
While Little Apple, Pear, Dr. Bananas and the other foods are making fun of Orange for getting his tongue stuck to the butt of a swan ice sculpture, Orange attempts to speak, only to spout out complete gibberish, prompting everyone else to cry tears of laughter at his expense. This causes a trio of yellow Monions to show up, believing Orange to be their master. Pear asks what the creatures are, to which Dr. Bananas explains that they are Monions, before leaving as the Monions chase him.
Two of the Monions manage to thaw Orange's tongue out of the ice sculpture, to which he shows his gratitude with a pun. Pear asks Dr. Bananas what's happening, to which he replies that the Monions only desire to serve a master who makes others cry, and will endlessly follow whichever person makes people cry the most. Little Apple points out Dr. Bananas seems to be speaking from experience, which Dr. Bananas confirms, explaining that the Monions began following him shortly after he invented a tear gun, which he deliberately broke in a failed attempt to get them to stop following him against his wishes.
Little Apple asks Dr. Bananas if the Monions are following Orange because they believe he's good at making people cry, which Dr. Bananas confirms as being in the Monions' nature. Orange then sets up a joke about Little Apple being illiterate, which one of the Monions answers, to which Orange asks if he's already heard this one. This annoys Little Apple, prompting Orange to laugh at him, which the Monions quickly join in on.
Pear expresses relief that the Monions likely won't follow Orange for much longer, as he doesn't really make people cry with his jokes. Orange proceeds to prove him otherwise by letting out a massive fart that engulfs most of the kitchen, causing Pear, Little Apple and Dr. Bananas to cry tears of pain in their eyes, thus making the Monions return to Orange as their master. Orange then proceeds to do various annoying things for the Monions to copy, only for them to abandon him shortly afterwards.
Orange asks why the Monions are no longer following him, to which Pear explains to him that they don't like him because he's funny, but because they think he's good at making people cry. Orange attempts to win the Monions back by making a joke at the expense of Little Apple's height, only for Little Apple to bluntly tell him that it has no effect if he already hears it all the time. Orange then tries to make Pear and Dr. Bananas cry by telling them both that they smell, which has no effect as Pear doesn't actually smell, and Dr. Bananas does smell but doesn't care. A block of cheese then suggests that Orange could always try farting again, much to Pear's disgust.
Orange proceeds to make a pun about cutting the cheese as a warning to the block of cheese, only for the knife to slice him in half anyway, before proceeding to attack the other foods in the kitchen as Orange, Little Apple, Pear and Dr. Bananas hide. The knife then prepares to slice the Monions as Dr. Bananas attempts to warn them to move out the way, only for the knife to slice one of them in half regardless, causing him to emit a strong aroma that causes Orange and the others to cry due to the eye strain from it, prompting the two remaining Monions to jump onto the knife so they can follow him.
