The Monster from the Id is the main antagonist of the 1956 American science fiction film Forbidden Planet. It is a creature made of solidified psychic energy derived from the subconscious thoughts of Dr. Edward Morbius, powered by the Krell Great Machine.

Biography[]

The planet Altair IV was once inhabited by a scientifically advanced race known as the Krell, who built a machine designed to create material objects from thought. However, they were not able to control their own subconscious desires, and thus the machine created monsters that ended up wiping them out.

Dr. Edward Morbius, a scientist from Earth, arrived on the planet along with an expedition aboard the starship Bellerophon, and began studying the machine. He unwittingly unleashed the monster and it ended up killing everyone except for him and his daughter, and destroying their ship.

Twenty years later, the United Planets Cruiser C-57D, commanded by John J. Adams, arrived to investigate the disappearance of the expedition.

Due to experimenting with the Krell technology, Dr. Morbius caused the monster to manifest while he was sleeping, and it attacked and killed many crewmembers, with their weapons being ineffective against it. The creature is ultimately destroyed when Morbius dies.

Powers and Abilities[]

The Monster is invisible except when touching a forcefield or struck by energy weapons. Being made of solidified thought energy, it is immune to all types of conventional weapons, but forcefields and physical barriers can impede it somewhat. However, since it draws power from the Krell machine complex, which is powered by 9200 thermonuclear reactors, it is capable of exerting nearly unlimited force, potentially enough to destroy an entire planet (as the self-destruct of the Krell mechanism destroyed the planet Altair IV).

The monster could only manifest at first while Dr. Morbius was asleep, but as it grew more powerful it was able to exist while he was awake as well. The death of the individual from whose subconscious the monster manifests, and/or the destruction of the Krell machinery, is the only way to permanently destroy it.
