Monsters are the main/major antagonistic force in the 2012 mounted light gun game Dark Escape created by Bandai Namco Entertainment. They are a variety of mutated creatures created by the main antagonists of the game, the Scientist and his partner, an unknown military man.
Personality[]
Monsters in Dark Escape 4D behave like feral, mindless beasts that attack any human they encounter. Monsters tend to attack in groups, swarming their victims in their attempts to kill them.
Monsters do not appear to be hostile to each other, though Hude Spiders have been seen to cocoon zombies in their webs. Other times, types of monsters are seen working together to try and kill Courtney and her companion.
At various points in the game, the monsters will jumpscare the players whose reactions will be tracked via a heart monitor built into the arcade machine.
Biography[]
Background[]
Monsters in-game were created as a result of the Scientist's genetic super soldier experiments. Highly contagious microbes could infect any human through a simple scratch and quickly transform them into a monster. Other monsters were seen to have been created in pod-like machines.
At some point, the Scientist and his partner made a bet on two humans that they had kidnapped and pitted against their creations. Contrary to what his partner thought, the Scientist believed that Courtney and her companion could survive long enough, whereas his partner thought the two would be dead within minutes.
Prison: Necrophobia[]
The monsters were first seen shortly after Courtney and her companion regain their consciousness in a dilapidated underground prison cell and where they are greeted by the Scientist on a television who provides them with weapons to defend themselves against the creatures. The first monster, a zombie, is encountered shortly after the Scientist signs off. The creature is seen walking by Courtney and her companion, obscured by shadow. The zombie initially looks like another human from within the shadows, until it quickly emerges and attempts to kill Courtney and her companion who quickly fire at the creature with their guns, killing it.
As Courtney and her companion traverse the prison, they are besieged by more zombies from every which way. Some zombies are seen trapped inside prison cells, though some are able to break out. Other zombies are seen wielding and tossing weapons or possess a form of armor.
Eventually escaping from prison after gunning down numerous zombies, Courtney and her partner can choose the next three stages any way they want to go. The Prison is the only sector where there is no boss monster present.
Death Chamber: Achluophobia[]
When Courtney and her partner arrive, they are greeted by the Scientist who explains that the animated corpses they have seen are the by-products of his genetic super soldier experiments, exclaiming that they would be a magnificent weapon.
The duo take their weapons provided by the Scientist and go through a door where they encounter a strange figure, a Reza Ricker, standing in the corridor. The figure initially looks almost human, until its neck stretches out and then gets down on all fours to attack Courtney and her partner. Courtney and her partner quickly kill the creature and enter a room that possesses various torture machines before being besieged by more monsters. The duo fight them off before escaping into in a corridor. The duo barely have time to catch their breath when more monsters arrive, at one point having to fight them in pitch black darkness after Courtney accidentally shoots the lights which forces them to switch weapons.
Eventually, Courtney and her partner arrive in an area where they find several Reza Rickers sound asleep. They attempt to sneak past the monsters without waking them and almost succeed until another creature, a boss monster known as a Proufa Alligator, crashes through a wall. The duo escape the beast and battle numerous Reza Rickers and Hills before arriving in a Colosseum-like room. Courtney and her partner are then locked in and must fight two Proufa Alligators which emerge from underground. They evade the monsters attacks and get several shots in before using their guns to destroy a winch holding up a large chandelier which falls onto the Proufa Alligators, killing them.

Types of Monsters[]
Enemies[]
Zombies[]
The most prevalent monsters throughout the game appearing in all stages except at the final level. These monsters look and act just like typical zombies seen from mainstream medias. They possess rotting, green skin and glowing green eyes. Many zombies wear prisoner garbs, though some are seen to be wearing normal clothing while others wear lab uniforms such as that of doctors or hazmat suits.
They attack by biting, clawing and punching with their hands, using various weapons (projectiles and close ranged) should they happen to possess one, vomiting acid spits and are excellent at ambush. But unlike mainstream zombies, these zombies are very fast runners and immensely durable (a single or two ~ three headshots will not do the trick). These factors make them not only dangerous when they attack in groups, but also when dealing with them as individuals. Zombies also seem able to navigate through dark environments, as seen during Death Chamber stage.
Shell Body Zombies[]
These hulking undead brutes have their heads wrapped with facial carapaces, forcing Courtney and her companion to fire in specific, targeted areas in order to damage them and their armor blows off after doing so. Once their carapaces are unmasked, these zombies will reveal their abominable faces and glowing green hearts.
These monsters are even more durable than their regular zombie cousins and will continue attacking even after the loss of head covers until they are shot down as quickly as possible. Unlike regular zombies, they do not carry weapons nor do they spit acids and will attack with simple charging, hitting, punching and clawing. They are second most common monsters in the game. In Prison stage, they will act as boss enemies.
Reza Rickers[]
These dexterous quadrupedal creatures (can temporarily stand on two using something to grab onto) appear primarily in Death Chamber stage. They have ability to stretch their necks very long and launch their heads to bite from afar. They are also very agile, able to leap, pounce up close, and often jump from one spot to next, never staying still; making them hard to aim and shoot at properly. They spit acids for another form of ranged attack. Additionally, Reza Rickers can walk on walls and ceilings. They seem to be adaptable to darkness, as seen clearly during the tunnel section where players must travel the tunnel devoid of light using magnum handguns with lights attached.
Hills[]
Appearing only in Death Chamber stage, these monsters look like enlarged leeches that possess mouths which look like that of the Reza Rickers. Although they go down with single shots, they attack in swarms and latch onto the screen. When they latch onto the screen, players have limited time set to kill them. If players fail to remove them all within the allotted time, they will bite and cause damage. But with Hills attacking in groups simultaneously ridding them all on time will not be easy, especially if players possess guns with weak rapid firing capabilities (unfortunately players have no choice in choosing their guns). Players should focus on destroying much of Hills swarms with guns before all those swarms can attack players, reducing their numbers and thereby mitigating the numbers of monsters attacking. Like Reza Rickers, Hills too can navigate through darkness quite well.
Flies[]
Appearing only in Lab Complex stage, these monsters look like large flies whose heads can open up to bite their victims. They are capable of flying and attack in swarms, though they do not attack immediately, instead hovering in front on the screen for a brief moment before biting. They possess weaknesses, threats and attack patterns similar to that of Hills and should be dealt with similarly.
Hude Spiders[]
Appearing only in Lab Complex stage, these abominable human-spider crossbreeds are highly dexterous and attack by spitting acids from a distance and latch onto the screen to bite (they bite with another mouth located at backs of their heads) at close range. Just like Hills, when Hude Spiders attack, they get up close and players have limited time set to kill them. If players fail to remove them all within the allotted time, they will bite and cause damage. Like Hills, Hude Spiders attack in groups all at once and ridding them all on time will not be easy, especially if players possess guns with weak rapid firing capabilities. Unlike Hills however, Hude Spiders possess endurance - meaning they do not go down in one shot. This makes killing them all on time when they proceed to latch even more problematic. Worse still, is that Hude Spiders possess a sort of carapace tail that they can use as a shield to cover their bodies and protect themselves from gun fire. As players advance further into the lab, Hude Spiders are seen contained in lab tanks. When lab tanks are shot they are destroyed along with their occupants, prompting the destroyed tank to close down. During the battle against Queen Spider, the boss monster of Lab Complex, Queen summons a swarm of Hude Spiders to fight players.
Aerial Micro-Spores[]
Minuscule, transparent, one-eyed ray pup-like creatures released by the final boss, the Fortress Digamma. Although appearing only in final stage and having very limited screen time, they may be the most dangerous enemies in the game, as they determine the ending. When the Fortress Digamma is nearing defeat, it releases the Arial Micro-Spores from its body which will fly through the air. Courtney and her companion must shoot all of the spores down before they can reach them. Should the duo fail to shoot any of them down, the spores will explode, releasing a cloud of microbes that will infect Courtney which will transform her into a zombie who proceeds to murder her former partner at the end of the game.
In previous levels of the game, security cameras will be scattered everywhere which the player can shoot and destroy. There are a total of seventeen cameras and the number that are destroyed will determine the difficulty of shooting the Arial Micro-Spores; the more cameras smashed, the easier things will be during the final level.
Bosses[]
Proufa Alligators[]
The Proufa Alligators are a grotesque duo of mutant, human-gator monsters and are the final bosses in the Death Chamber. Players encounter them at what it appears to be a large arena. The Proufa Alligators body structure is similar to that of the Reza Rickers, as they are quadrupedal monsters. The Proufa Alligators have spines on their backs and possess jaws similar to that of real alligators, but they are horizontal instead of vertical and have several eyes all over the sides. Inside their jaws are what appear to be the Proufa Alligators' faces or mouths.
Proufa Alligators are capable of moving underground and attack with pouncing, tail lash, and charge-bite.
Scissors Hand Man[]
The Scissors Hand Man is an gigantic, plant-hybrid, mutant zombie and the final boss of the Cabin. He stands at least thrice the size of all other zombies seen in-game. The Scissors Hand Man wears a pair of ripped pants, held up with a belt and has shackle cuffs on his hands and legs. On various parts of his body, there are what appear to be venus flytraps, most notably his head which is enclosed by a venus flytrap that can open to reveal his skull face. The most prominent feature of the Scissors Hand Man is that he possesses a pair of large, sharp bladed scissors on his right arm which he uses to attack his victims, hence the name.
The Scissors Hand Man is shown to possess enhanced strength, as he was able to lift and toss a pickup truck at Courtney Wall. True to his name, he will often attempt to stab, slash, or snip players with his scissors. His additional attacks include kicking while climbing onto warehouse roof frame, body blows, throwing nearby objects such as barrels, firing projectiles from the venus flytraps on his body and summoning zombies to either distract players while he charges at them (trampling zombies he summoned in process) or have the zombies attack players directly. At times, the Scissors Hand Man frequently jumps around, making it difficult for players to shoot at him.
Queen Spider[]
The final boss of the lab complex stage, the Queen Spider is the apparent leader of the Hude Spiders. There are two sides of her body and it is unclear which side is the front. From one side, the Queen Spider appears as an almost normal, albeit enormous, tarantula. However, from the other side, is a horrific, humanoid monster which protrudes from the tarantula sides abdomen. This side is slimy and white, and has arms that act like the tarantula side's back legs. On the lower part of the body, there is a opening with grotesque tentacles. On the upper part, there is a head that has few strands of hair and razor sharp teeth.
True to being a spider, both sides are dexterous and are able to crawl on the wall and ceiling effortlessly. Because this boss seemingly possesses two entities sharing one body, this boss battle is two-part. The spider side attacks players with fangs, sharp legs, spitting webs and bludgeon players with large swinging web cocoons which acts like wrecking balls. Additionally, the Queen Spider summons Hude Spiders to assist her. On Humanoid side, it attacks players with sharp legs, biting, and pouncing. Also this side moves fast and frequently, making players having hard time to aim and shoot at in a timely manner. Players get to fight spider side first and after it is down, the humanoid side comes to life with the life gauge fully restored and ready for round two. After humanoid side is down as well, the battle is considered won.
Fortress Digamma[]
The final creation of the Scientist and final boss of the entire game, the Fortress Digamma is a monstrosity virtually beyond description. A terrifying mass of mutated flesh which is spread all over and entangles the lair where it resides. The Fortress Digamma possesses numerous gut wrenching traits which it uses in combat. Among other things, there are several misshapen limbs, two of which are huge and protrude from both its shoulders and have large claws. Below those are two smaller limbs which, unlike the rest of its body, look like normal hands with minimal mutations. The Fortress Digamma has tentacles with sharp blades and pulsating blister-like openings all over its body, the latter of which fire off projectiles. It has a head, though it is grotesquely disfigured with waving tendrils and no eyes. On its belly is a peculiar growth which appears to be a weak spot of sorts.
The Fortress Digamma does not appear capable of basic locomotion and instead, can only barely move and relies on its massive, spread out body to fight. The monstrosity attacks by shooting forth its tentacles, biting, firing projectiles, and attempting to hit the duo with its other limbs. It has been shown to possess immense strength and durability, taking on many gunshots and even rocket launchers. When nearing defeat, the Fortress Digamma utilizes a new attack by releasing the Ariel Micro-Spores which play a crucial role on deciding how the end plays out. Regardless of what happens with the spores, the Fortress Digamma is still defeated when the players bombard it with rockets, setting the creature ablaze and causing it to collapse on the ground, dead.
Trivia[]
- These monsters are similiar to Creatures in SEGA's The House of the Dead series and B.O.W.s (Bio Organic Weapons or Bioweapon in short) in Capcom's Resident Evil, being byproduct of scientific experiment in creating formidable bioweapons. This helped by most recurring variant ofntheirnkind being reanimated corpses.
- In this game, played as trapped civillains (including Courtney Hill), teams up with her as she guides the players to safety.
