Monsters are the main/major antagonistic force in the joystick-mounted gun arcade games Let's Go Jungle!: Lost on the Island of Spice and Let's Go Island: Lost on the Island of Tropics created by Sega. They are a variety of animals and plants turned into mutated monsters from exposure to a chemical compound known as Green Leaves.

History[]

Let's Go Jungle!: Lost on the Island of Spice[]

Background[]

Before their creation, the many mutated creatures seen in both games were just ordinary animals. This changed after an environmental NGO known as Green Leaves with the motto "bring back the green" had come to an island in Asia that had been devastated from war.

With the intent on restoring the island, the scientists of the organization soon discovered a species of mushroom with extraordinary biological regenerative properties. Their scientists were able to extract and refine the mushrooms' essence, creating a powerful chemical that could accelerate biological growth. In cooperation with the island's native inhabitants, the organization used the chemical to restore the island's flora and fauna within five years.

Unfortunately, it was later discovered that the chemical was too powerful and was revealed to have the side effect of mutating and enlarging any exposed organisms. This resulted in giant-sized animals, insects, and plants with hostility to humans. Both the organization and many of the natives evacuated the island when events grew uncontrollable, although a number of natives decided to remain behind.

Jungle Safari[]

Ben and Norah, whose relationship had been floundering, take a jungle tour on the very island being plagued by these monsters. At the beginning of the tour, Ben appears nervous and notes the odd military attire of their guides, while Norah attempts to calm him down. However, the Ben then notices that their vehicle is being pursued by a group of giant tarantulas. The guides try to calm the two down but one of them is killed by a tarantulas, terrifying the both of them. They are then given assault rifles with which to defend themselves against the tarantula swarms. In the middle of shooting the monsters, another vehicle comes out of nowhere with other tourists on board who are being attacked by swarms of flying insects. Ben and Norah help the tourists fend off the swarms before getting separated. Eventually, their vehicle crashes and before they can ask the driver what happened, he runs away in panic. They immediately discover why; an even bigger tarantula has found them. They flee from the beast in their vehicle who pursues them across the jungle. Unlike other monsters, this one is more durable which forces the player to shoot it in specific targets to hurt it. The two eventually manage to escape the giant tarantula by driving their vehicle over a broken bridge. Ben and Norah set about to find a way off the island. A map in Ben's possession shows them that they have two options where to go next: a cave or a river.

Cave Temple[]

If the player(s) chose the cave, Ben and Norah traverse a dark cave and fight their way through hordes of crawling insects. They eventually find a trio of survivors and escape the cave with them, but one of them claims that Ben and Norah are not helping and declares himself the leader, taking their guns. Before they can protest, they see a rescue helicopter arriving at a temple nearby. Ben and Norah are temporarily given slingshots to defend themselves and even have to save the self-proclaimed leader when he proves to be not much more competent than them. Eventually, they reach the helicopter, but find it does not have enough room for everyone and is forced to leave without the two. The pilot informs them that there is another extraction point in a nearby village from which they can evacuate the island, and they are given their guns back. The helicopter takes off with the three survivors and apologizes for leaving Ben and Norah, leaving the two distraught. They barely have time to breathe when a giant mantis which was watching from afar then leaps down and attacks. Ben and Norah battle the mantis as it slashes at them with its arms, with Norah calling it a "Kung Fu Master wanna be!" The mantis eventually takes flight, but Ben and Norah blast it with hails of bullets which causes it to lose control and smash face first into the hand of a Buddha statue before falling back and down the temple stairs. Upon killing the mantis, Norah then comments, "It really is mysterious Asia."

River Cruise[]

If the player(s) chose the river, Ben and Norah make their way through a swamp and are besieged by hordes of river dwelling monsters. They ride a motor boat down the river, but soon lose their guns in the water. They arrive at an old boat house where they then find themselves face to face with scores of mutated tree frogs. With no guns, the duo are forced to use oars to fend off the attacking amphibians. Things get even worse when a giant mutant bullfrog emerges from the water. The duo eventually find new guns, however, and manage to kill the bullfrog which explodes into green slime and all over them. Upon killing the giant bullfrog, they find a radio that tells anyone listening about a nearby village where they can escape the island via helicopter.

Elephant Ride[]

On the third stage, Ben and Norah travel through an demolished village, only to be attacked by more mutated bugs. To add insult to injury, the duo encounter the giant tarantula they had escaped from before. At first, the tarantula does not see them but senses their presence, and the two have to sneak across several stone pillars to avoid its detection. They manage to evade the tarantula's gaze and cross a broken bridge over a river while more mutant bugs, fish, and frogs attack them. The two then hear a young boy calling for help and find him along with his elephant being attacked by mutant fleas all over its body. They attempt to shoot the fleas but the boy does not want his elephant to get hurt, forcing them to bludgeon the fleas off with the butts of their guns. The boy then thanks Ben and Norah by letting them ride his elephant to where the helipad is, which is where the rescue helicopter can help them escape. They then hear the roars of the giant tarantula and quickly flee on the elephant. On the way, the elephant is able to kill a large number of the lesser mutant tarantulas and the boy shows a good luck charm in his possession which somehow keeps the mutants away. The giant tarantula then returns once more and gives chase, now having mushrooms growing out of its back. The boy exclaims that all the monsters they have seen are the result of the mushrooms. Ben and Norah manage injure the tarantula but this does not kill it, instead it falls into a river.

The group then arrives at a Buddhist temple where the helipad is and discover some peculiar chemical barrels with the Green Leaves logo on them, Norah being familiar with the organization. They enter the temple and notice more of those strange mushrooms which are actually growing out of the Green Leaves barrels. The giant tarantula from before then returns and lunges at them from above. However, Ben and Norah manage to blast the tarantula with their guns before it can reach them and kill it. The tarantula is sent falling back and lands on a shrine in the temple, and its corpse spews out green blood. However, the blood then gets all over several lily plant pods around the shrine which contaminates and mutates them. The pods quickly grow teeth and then merge into one giant monster plant, which Ben and Norah must fight. The monstrous plant is eventually defeated with help from the boy who commands his elephant to kick a barrel of explosives at it, which Ben and Norah shoot and blow up, killing the plant in the explosion.

The boy thanks Ben and Norah for their help and notes that he did not help enough, so he gives Norah his good luck charm. The rescue helicopter then arrives which Ben and Norah board to depart from the island. However, unbeknownst to them, several butterflies land on the wreckage of the Buddhist temple shrine which is still contaminated by the remains of the mutant tarantula and plant. This leads to the events of the final stage.

Island Hopping[]

Whilst leaving the island in the helicopter, Ben and Norah learn the story behind everything they have experienced from their pilot; how "Green Leaves" and their actions led to all the giant-sized animals, insects, and plants they were forced to fight. Unfortunately, their ordeal is not yet over when a gargantuan butterfly alongside swarms of smaller ones attack the helicopter. The two battle mutated butterfly, but soon fall out of the helicopter during the fight. They hang onto a rope ladder, and due to their guns falling to the ocean, they must use a slingshot to deliver the final blow with the lucky charm the boy gave to Norah.

Depending on if the player(s) hit the creature or not, the couple will either make their relationship stronger and leave the island, or break up and escape, only to have their pilot infected with a mushroom.

Let's Go Island: Lost on the Island of Tropics[]

Background[]

Taking place at an abandoned resort and tourist destination on a tropical island, after the events of the previous game, the protagonists are a goofball tour guide called Zack and a nerdy girl called Beth. Somehow, several barrels of "Green Leaves" found their way to this island, apparently having been acquired by a band of local pirates who were searching for treasure. The chemicals in these barrels soon came into contact with the wildlife on the island which transformed them into hostile monsters.

Main Game[]

While on a tour boat, a goofball guide named Zack and a nerdy tourist named Beth witness a group of pirates fleeing from mutant sharks. The pirates boat then collides into their boat with the pirates landing inside after crashing. Beth and Zack fight the pursuing sharks with the pirates' weapons, and the pirates soon fall off the boat. Then, the captain tells both Zack and Beth that "[they've] hit the reef", but are able to dodge the obstacles. As the two jump off the boat as it crashes through a dock, they grab a rope and are dragged underwater whilst fending off mutant sea creatures. After the rope cuts off, both go up to the surface. The captain of the boat is able to find them but he is then killed by a gigantic, mutant octopus. Zack and Beth flee from the octopus on a wind surfing board and manage to escape it after they blast it with their guns, causing it to crash into a reef.

The duo then must go to an airport in order to get off the island and choose one of three options in order to get there: either they go by a scooter in the abandoned resort, jet ski in an unfinished underground concert hall, or the buggy through a golf course, all while surviving mutant creatures from the air, land, and sea. As they adventure through, the abandoned island is revealed to have a backstory. Before the game, Zack was an employee and worked at the resort. After a financial crisis came into the resort, it went out of business and Zack was sacked, closing down the entire island and changing Zack's career. As they travel to the airport, they duo lose their guns, but find other items that can be treated as temporary weapons.

When Zack and Beth arrive at the airport, they find a grouchy pilot and board his biplane. The pilot demands "to show them what they have" mistaking them for the pirates. Beth wonders what is the pilot talking about, but the plane then gets attacked by a giant queen wasp. The flee as the queen wasp and her drones pursue them as the two blast the monsters with their guns. The plane tries to fly, but the weight is too much and the pilot forces the duo to get off. Both Zack and Beth jump off the plane and down a cliff with a parachute. After defeating the giant queen wasp by causing it fall down the cliff with them and land on a bunch of sharp stalagmites, the duo survive the fall.

Zack and Beth are then "rescued" and kidnapped by the pirates who somehow managed to survive their experience with the mutant sharks. The pirates are also seen to be in possession of several old barrels of "Green Leaves" which they stowed on board. The two are forced by the pirates to retrieve some treasure from beneath the sea, a silver tube which the leader is told of by the pilot. As they dive, the two encounter all sorts of mutated sea creatures that attack. They then meet a dolphin and when they hit the bottom of the ocean, they find another dolphin trapped in the net. As the duo try to free the dolphin, they encounter the octopus from before, which had survived their previous battle. Zack and Beth manage to lift the net, free the dolphin, and find the tube the pirates are after. The octopus sprays ink at them and attacks, but both manage to escape. They swim back to the surface as the octopus pursues them with a legion of squids. However, the duo manage to fend off the octopus and squids' attack, spraying the former with bullets which ends it once and for all.

When Zack and Beth make it back to the surface, the pirates are shocked to find that the tube they sought does not any contain treasure at all. Zack, however, finds a lighter which is still in working condition, though Beth does not care. The pirate leader flies into a fit of rage, exclaiming that the pilot lied to them and he angrily kicks one of the "Green Leaves" barrels into the water. When the barrel hits bottom, it breaks open and the chemicals spread to a field of coral, awakening a giant monster. The pirates flee when the monster surfaces, and Zack alongside Beth fight back by using the boats cranes. They then get a ride with the dolphins they rescued, starting a chase with the coral monster pursuing them and the two fighting back with their guns. After the chase, the coral monster grabs them and attacks with tentacles from its mouth. However, the duo shoot at the monster, causing it to sneeze and let go of them. Their attack also breaks open several barrels that were inside its maw, revealing oil.

After the monster throws them, Zack and Beth land near the plane's crash site with the pilot still there, and the duo lose their weapons. Zack loses his confidence until Beth motivates him. Scrambling to find whatever weapons they can muster, they use the lighter Zack had found from before plus some fireworks that were among the cargo in the plane. What happens next depends on if the player gets the timing right and successfully kills the coral monster.

If successful, Zack and Beth manage to kill the coral monster by shooting the firework into its mouth. The firework ignites the oil and the monster blows up in a fiery explosion. Its remains break up into debris, raining gold and jewels which happens to be the actual treasure. While being stranded at sea after the battle and awaiting rescue, the two then start a relationship as they face toward a sunset before the credits begin to roll. If both players get an average score from 90 to 100 or a perfect S rank, a hidden cutscene is triggered where Zack removes Beth's broken glasses to reveal Beth's pretty face.

However, should they fail to hit the target, the monster will instead chase after the firework and the two will not develop romance, with Zack responding to Beth they will not get to land until she pays him for his extra services, triggering a bad ending.
