| “ | Quake critters are extremely tough, but you have the firepower to vent your grievances on them anyway. Good hunting. | „ |
| ~ The manual referring to the monsters of Quake. |
| “ | You there! Halt! Stop! Freeze! | „ |
| ~ The Enforcers whenever they spot Ranger. |
The Monsters are the main antagonists of the 1996 first-person shooter game Quake and supporting antagonists in the 2023 Quake II mission pack, Call of the Machine.
They are the demonic, Lovecraftian children of the game's main antagonist, Shub-Niggurath, and are employed through her interdimensional conquest. Ranger, being the only surviving/sane member of the special forces, takes it into his own hands to fight back against their invasion and put an end to Shub-Niggurath's reign of terror once and for all.
History[]
After the special forces invented teleportation devices referred to as "slipgates," Shub-Niggurath is made aware of this, and manipulates the slipgates to transport her offspring to Earth from the Quake dimensions in hopes of taking it over after succeeding in conquering other worlds in the past. Once Shub-Niggurath's "Death Squads" arrive to Earth through the military base's slipgates, They begin to kill Ranger's fellow marines and kidnap the ones left alive to be brainwashed and given cybernetic implants that give them feelings of ecstasy whenever they kill another living being.
Ranger gets a phone call at 4:00 AM where the commander explains to him the situation, and he arrives to the military base, only to find his comrades transformed into grunts. After killing them, Ranger discovers that the forces of Quake are after the four runes to take over the world, and decides to stop them by using the slipgates to enter the realms of Quake and find them for himself.
After facing the horrors in the Dimension of The Doomed, Ranger is confronted by Chthon, a huge lava monster that hurls flaming chunks of magma at him. Ranger is able to defeat Chthon by electrocuting it to death, allowing him to collect the Rune of Earth Magic and push forward in his quest to defeat Shub-Niggurath and her monstrous army.
Once Ranger has the last three runes in his possession, Ranger is able to enter Shub-Niggurath's lair and confront her. Ranger has to get past a wave of shamblers and vores to get to a teleporter connected to a mysterious spiked sphere that continuously flies in and out of the Hell-Mother's body, which he uses to kill Shub-Niggurath by "telefragging" her. Once the elder god is killed, most, if not all of her monsters die with her.
Quake II[]
| “ | This thing is definitely not from Stroggos. It may be from a past Strogg conquered planet, or it might be from another dimension entirely. We're not quite sure. | „ |
| ~ iD Vault's description of a shambler. |
Shamblers make a cameo appearance in the 2023 campaign of Quake II, Call of the Machine, where they are implied to be the surviving children of Shub-Niggurath after the events of Quake. Their affiliation with the Strogg is unclear, but they are heavily implied to be their allies, or even their actual creators. The shamblers that appear in the campaign include Modir, an enormous boss shambler, and the Masters of the Machine, a group of shamblers that command the Strogg in the power vacuum.
Trivia[]
- According to John Romero, most of the creatures lack eyes due to the Quake realms being dim, humid, and "horrific," therefore eyes wouldn't be necessary for their survival.
- Also according to John Romero, all of the vores encountered in the game are female. However, it is unknown if there are male vores or if they hail from an all-female race.
- The grunts seem to be inspirations for the Strogg in Quake II, as both enemies are humans who have been converted into brainwashed cyborgs by higher entities.
