~ Samuel Campbell about Alpha Monsters |
Monsters are major antagonists of The CW fantasy show Supernatural. They are supernatural beings created by the ancient Leviathan-relative known as Eve; the Mother of All. After their death, their souls went to Purgatory.
Overview[]
Monsters are supernatural creatures that prey on humans. Often, but not always, they were once human themselves. Both has its particular nature, patterns of behavior, strengths, and weaknesses. Some monsters are hideous in appearance, while others look no different than any ordinary human. Regardless of what they look like, monsters are considered by most hunters to be irredeemably evil and beat destroyed without hesitation or mercy. But not all monsters are the same. Some are savage benats while others are intelligent, if no less bloodthiraty. And while it's rare, some that used to be human are capable of resisting the impulse to kill. They can try to resist, but sooner or later their evil side takes over.
According to The Supernatural Book of Monsters, Spirits, Demons and Ghouls, the word "monster" comes from the Latin monstrum, which also means "portent" or "omen." From a root, monere, that means "warn." People used to think that monsters were signs of impending disaster.
Types[]
Arachne[]
Acording to Samuel Campbell, no one has seen an Arachne outside of Crete for about 2,000 years, until Eve's rising in season 6.
In the official companion book for Season 6, writer Andrew Dabb explained the origin of the series' arachnes; "There's a Greek mythological story about a woman who is an excellent weaver, but she weaves so well that the gods are jealous and as punishment for showing up the gods, the goddess Athena/Minerva reaches down and turns the woman into a spider. That explains why the spider can weave webs so well."

“ | Dean: You think these suckers can really grant wishes? Sam: I don't know. I guess they're powerful enough. But not exactly like Barbara Eden in harem pants. I mean, djinn have been feeding off people for centuries. They're all over the Quran. |
„ |
~ Sam and Dean Winchester |
According to The Supernatural Book of Monsters, Spirits, Demons and Ghouls, Djinn is an Arabic demon or spirit, created by Allah from smokeless fire. Jinn were created before humans and can be resentful at what they see as the usurpation of the world by humans. They are generally invisible, but they can manifest themselves in a variety of forms and can always see things that are normally visible. Jinns occupy a place in Islam unlike demons in Christianity because the Koran is preached to them as well as to humans. Still, they are often feared. A kind of jinn known as a marid had control over water, with all of the power and fickleness that that might imply.

Me a man, or a sixty foot, fire-breathing serpent snake from Hell?"

~ Sam Winchester |
According to The Supernatural Book of Monsters, Spirits, Demons and Ghouls, the word ghoul come from the medieval Arabic ghul; which meant a kind of demon. Specifically a kind of demon that lived in graveyards and was the offspring of Iblis, a jinn roughly corresponding to Satan. Like other demons, Iblis gets jonesing for human women once in a while-well, all the time-and every time he SCores, that's one more ghul in the world. Iblis was allowed to roam the earth, unlike his Judeo-Christian counterpart, because Allah wanted to test people by allowing someone to put wicked ideas into their heads. Ghul also means a kind of desert-dwelling shapeshifter, often assuming the guise of a hyena, that lures travelers off paths so it can eat them. It's especially fond of children and will dig up graves to eat the dead.

Kitsune can take human form, except often they have trouble hiding their tails, which can complicate the kind of deception necessary to capture a human. Sometimes kitsune feed off the life force of the men they seduce, and sometimes they marry and settle down. The kitsune can be a devoted wife, but the marriages are always doomed because sooner or later, it hubby notices the tail. Then the kitsune has to leave, or in other versions the man suddenly awakens from the kitsune's enchantment, far from home and destined for a very interesting conversation with the human family he left behind.
A kitsune's magical abilities and foxy temperament mean that they're ferce tricksters. Some of their favorite targets are pompous men, the greedy and boastful types. This playfulness can turn dark, though, and kitsune are also known to play cruel tricks on people who don't deserve it at all. The more powerful of them have truly marvelous magical abilities, including the ability to bend time and space. Some kitsune are constantly guarding a hoshi no tama, or "star ball." Like a selkie's skin, if you've got a kitsune's star ball, you can make it do whatever you want.
In Supernatural: The Official Companion Season 7, writer Daniel Loflin gave a bit more insight into Kitsunes. "They're just a different version of the werewolf. Sera Gamble wanted to do a Let The Right One In-type episode where Sam has his first kiss. We didn't want to do a vampire [like in the movie], so we found the Japanese monster, the kitsune, and we amended the lore to fit the story."

The creature travels by night, spreading misery and desecrating holy things. He or she is usually naked, except for a coyote skin. The yenaldooshi is also said to have the power to assume the form of a coyote or other animal.

Vampires[]
Vampires are re-animated corpses of human beings and said to live on human or animal blood. They often have unnatural powers and the ability to physically transform.
The first time Sam and Dean fought vampires was when they were looking for The Colt; a gun that could kill anything with a single shot. They were a little surprised even to find vampires, since John Winchester had been under the impression that a hunter buddy of his, Daniel Elkins, had killed the last remaining North American vampire.
According to The Supernatural Book of Monsters, Spirits, Demons and Ghouls, the first English use of the word "vampire" happens in about 1734, in The Travels of Three English Gentlemen, now known only as part of volume four of the 1J45 Harleian Miscellany.
Elkins's journal had a lot of information on vampires: they nest in small groups, eight to ten, and send out individuals or smaller groups to hunt. Victims are taken to the nest, where they're kept alive for as long as the vampires can restrain themselves.
The next time the Winchesters saw vampires, John was dead. This was in Red Lodge, Montana, after they lost the Colt. Turned out that some vampires were responsible for the cattle mutilations, and the hunter Gordon Walker was responsible for the decapitations of the vampires. Who weren't feeding on people because they were sick of being hunted.

Wendigo[]
According to The Supernatural Book of Monsters, Spirits, Demons and Ghouls, Wendigo is a creature that was once human but was transformed into an immortal evil spirit when it took up the practice of cannibalism. Wendigos are cursed to wander the land, eternally seeking to fulfill their voracious appetite for human flesh.
Various Native American tribes tell slightly different stories about this creature and refer to it by different names; Wendigo, Witigo, Witiko and Wee-Tee-Go, but each version roughly translates to mean the evil spirit that devours mankind. Around 1860, a German explorer translated Wendigo as cannibal.
Wendigos are believed to live in the northern woods of Minnesota and in the north central regions of Canada. Kenora, Ontario, Canada, has been given the title of Wendigo Capital of the World by many. Sightings of the creature in this area have continued well into the new millennium.
Wendigos are generally rumored to be gigantic spirits, over fifteen feet tall, lanky and with glowing eyes, long yellowed fangs, terrible claws and overly long tongues. Sometimes they are said to have a sallow, yellowish skin. Other times they are described as being matted with hair. The Wendigo's full powers have never been recorded. The creature excels at stealth and is a near-perfect hunter, knowing and using every inch of its territory; caves, hills, trees and bushes. Some stories posit that Wendigos can control the weather through the use of dark magic.

The change from man to wolf can be voluntary or forced by certain cycles of the moon and certain sounds (such as howling). In some folklore, werewolves are immune from aging and most physical diseases.
