Montgomery "Monty" Gator is a major antagonist of Steel Wool era of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise.
He is an animatronic alligator who was once hacked by Gregory into following Vanny's orders to kill any children left at the Pizzaplex, which ironically resulted in Monty being out to kill the boy once he redeemed himself. Wrathful but not very smart, Monty is the strongest and most aggressive of the Glamrocks.
Unlike Chica and Roxy, who were shown to be tragic victims of brainwashing and hacking, the game reveals that Monty has always been evil, having attacked and decommissioned Glamrock Bonnie while plotting to do the same to Glamrock Freddy.
In Ruin, Monty meets his death at the hands of Cassie after she used her Faz-Wrench to electrocute him.
He is voiced by Cameron Miller, who also voices Carnie in Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted 2.
Appearance[]
Monty is a green cartoon alligator with sharp teeth, a red Mohawk and yellow star-shaped glasses. He also wears purple finger-less gloves, shoulder pads, and has purple feet and eyelids, as well as a yellow stomach and lower jaw. Underneath his glasses, his eyes are revealed to be red. Like the other three Glamrock animatronics, Monty’s casing becomes dirtier and cracked as the night progresses.
However, after falling off the catwalks at Monty Golf, Monty has become incredibly damaged. His glasses, legs and tail are all gone and his upper left jaw is damaged, revealing some ripped out black cords underneath where his legs used to be. The casing on his right hand has been removed, revealing the endoskeleton inside, while his left hand is entirely exposing his entire endoskeleton arm. He also has scars on his right arm and has a huge slash in his chest. His shoulder pads are also damaged at the front.
Quite a while after the Pizzaplex was destroyed and abandoned, Monty has degraded to nothing but a rusty endoskeleton with no casing, making him nearly unrecognizable. The bottom of his torso is especially scratched up, likely from dragging himself along the floor. His Mohawk has been reduced to only a few ragged strands of hair, and he has no eyelids, with his left eye being black with a glowing red pupil. His teeth are surprisingly clean, but several of them are broken, dislocated or missing. His lower jaw is a different color than the rest of the body.
Personality[]
While the fictional-fictional character is portrayed as cool, laid-back and calm, the real Montgomery Gator is a rather violent animatronic with an affinity for smashing things. One instance of his destructive behavior is when he can be heard smashing several objects within his closed stage. He also smashes the plastic ball guns during his boss battle. Of all the animatronics, he is possibly the most dangerous, as there are several gates with signs that signify his inability to enter those areas. This may have been done by the workers to prevent him from hurting any patrons.
There are also hints Monty is extremely jealous, egotistical and hungry for power. He wants to destroy and usurp Glamrock Freddy to be the main face of the PizzaPlex with everyone's attention at him out of petty spite, and he decommissioned Glamrok Bonnie to take his spot in the band. That said, cut-outs in Ruin show he apparently admired the band and that Bonnie willingly passed on the torch: this was just a cover-up by Fazbear Entertainment and the backstory of the fictional-fictional Monty, especially since the animatronic Monty harbored a strong hatred towards Bonnie, as demonstrated in the VIP interactive novel, where he angrily stomps on a bag of candy called "Bonnie Bites" and is implied to have sabotaged a Bonnie-themed go-kart.
However, despite the above, VIP shows that when not hacked, Monty is capable of getting along with children, not unlike the other animatronics. He's also shown to enjoy El Chip's tortilla chips.
After being destroyed by Gregory, split in half and then reduced to an endoskeleton, Monty has completely lost his sanity and gone fully feral. He no longer speaks, only roaring in anger and trying to kill anything he comes across. His anger issues and implied jealousy are completely gone in favor of an aggressive animal.
Biography[]
Secret of the Mimic[]
Monty's origins go back to origins date back to roughly 1979, where character of Jugband Monty was designed by Murray's Costume Manor CEO Edwin Murray, who at the time, was William Afton's business partner. Jugband Monty was a fat, jolly, "country bumpkin" character who wore a straw hat and overalls, playing the banjo as part of the Demo-tronic Welcome Show. This version of Monty was an MCM springtrap suit, and was non-sapient and mostly harmless.
Later, Afton would double-cross Murray, stealing his technology, designs, and employees for use in his own facilities, including the design for Monty. Later, after Murray was supposedly killed by the Mimic, the studio fell into disrepair. The Jugband Monty was one of many springtrap suits worn by the Mimic.
Origins[]
Later, Afton designed a new version of Jugband Monty to be part of the animatronic band at the original Freddy Fazbear's pizza, but later decided against using it.
The current incarnation of Monty was an animatronic created as a side attraction for Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex. Like the others, he was built in a workshop called the Playpen where, when still an endoskeleton, was given training on how to interact with humans, with an experimental AI that encouraged development of a unique personality. Eventually, a buffoonish male persona took hold, and a casing resembling a modern version of the earlier design was applied, thus beginning the life of Montgomery Gator.
He was then designated the mascot of Monty's Maze, where he would chase patrons through a maze as they attempted to find the exit. The attraction proved unpopular due to children finding it too scary, and as a result it was revamped into a mini-golf course titled "Monty's Gator Golf".
As stated before, Monty was originally created as a side character. That said, one night, Glamrock Bonnie, one of the four main animatronics, mysteriously disappeared after venturing into Monty Golf. Bonnie was eventually put out of commission (either because they couldn't find him, he was found destroyed, or something else entirely), and Fazbear Entertainment decided to simply replace him with Monty, believing he may prove more popular than Bonnie one day. With his new claw upgrades that allowed him to play the bass, Monty became much stronger than the other animatronics.
The sequel DLC Ruin reveals that, apparently, Glamrock Bonnie decided to pass on the torch to Monty, that being the reason why he's in the band in the present. However, with the wrecked body of Glamrock Bonnie being found in one of the backrooms of Bonnie Bowl with claw marks on his torso, this was simply been a cover story made by Fazbear Entertainment. Posters of Bonnie indicate that Monty's sunglasses originally belonged to Bonnie, revealing that Monty stole them.
Security Breach[]
One night, a child named Gregory, the same one who hacked the Glamrocks in the first place, ended up trapped in the Pizzaplex just as it was about to close. Vanny had Montgomery and his fellow Glamrocks chase Gregory around the Pizzaplex and kill him, though he was really doing this out of sheer bloodlust and sadism not because he was forced into it unlike Chica and Roxy, but Glamrock Freddy was mysteriously unaffected and tried to help Gregory to escape the building.
In the Monty Golf section, Gregory planned to decommission Monty by confronting him in his titular golf course. After making his way to the laser attraction on top of the course, Monty jumped down from a carriage to attack Gregory, where his boss fight begins. The player must avoid Monty as they use the blasters to fire at the Splash Bucket at the edge of the golf course, to rack up points so it will tip over. The blasters break once all of their ammunition has been consumed, but Monty can smash them on his own. After scoring enough points, Monty must be lured to the Splash Bucket, where it then starts to tip its contents. Monty manages to grab and retain the bucket above him but the catwalks below cannot support the weight of both, this breaks the catwalks and makes Monty fall backwards over the railings. He smashes into several pipes and vents as he falls, being torn in half by one impact, shattering him.
After collecting Monty's claws, Gregory took them to Parts and Service to upgrade Glamrock Freddy, allowing him to smash through the same gates meant to restrain Monty. Glamrock Freddy noticed his new hands were different and asks Gregory where he got them, but Gregory tells him he'd rather not say, which Freddy oddly accepts.
Despite this, Monty will still wander around the Pizzaplex, hunting for Gregory. However, due to him losing his legs he can only crawl, which is also a slight perk for him because due to him being lower to the ground he can be harder to spot in certain areas, allowing him to easily be able to hide and ambush Gregory more effectively. Due to losing his sunglasses he can now be stunned, and he's significantly slower, although he still manages to be faster than Gregory when crawling, even with the Running Shoes. He can somehow still jump, although not nearly as far, but he still should not be underestimated.
Ruin[]
Following the dilapidation of the Mega Pizzaplex, Monty was reduced to a mere endoskeleton, becoming mute and aggressive to everyone he sees, including people who aren't Gregory. When Cassie is lured to the Pizzaplex by the Mimic pretending to be Gregory, Monty is the second animatronic she faces after Chica. He then becomes a recurring threat, occasionally trying to kill Cassie out of either his own will or on M.X.E.S.'s commands.
At one point, Monty finds and attacks Cassie in a flooded area underneath Roxy Raceway. He swims in the water, forcing the girl to jump on floating boxes and gates to avoid being killed. Once Cassie activates the Glamrock Bonnie neon sign that has been submerged in water, Monty is electrocuted and sinks to the water below. Ironically enough, he is finished off by a sign of the very animatronic he replaced.

Trivia[]
- Montgomery is the first animatronic in the Five Nights at Freddy's series to be a reptile.
- Montgomery is the only Glamrock animatronic to not be based on an animatronic from previous games, nor the animal species they are based on. Continuity-wise, however, he was based on the design of a much older model.
- Montgomery is the replacement for Glamrock Bonnie, who was scrapped for unknown reasons before the events of the game. It's been revealed that Monty actually killed Bonnie to take his place, and that he will do the same to Freddy to become the face of the PizzaPlex; one of the messages reveals Glamrock Bonnie's last publicly known location was Monty's Gator Golf, and in one of the levels of the golf mini-game, Freddy is seen in the garbage while Monty, Chica and Roxanne are playing a show on the stage, with Monty on the center and a giant Monty hologram behind them. This shows that he is the only one out of the Glamrock animatronics that is truly evil, and doesn't need to be hacked to cause harm; while Glamrock Chica destroys the S.T.A.F.F. Bot that Gregory uses to make her a pizza, and Roxanne Wolf has been mentioned to have been destroying S.T.A.F.F. Bots in her Roxy Raceway, the S.T.A.F.F. are barely sentient, especially the ones Roxanne destroys, to the point one of the human employees called them braindead, and Glamrock Freddy (who doesn't like his bandmates getting hurt) is unconcerned about them; Glamrock Bonnie was quite likely as intelligent and borderline-human as the other animatronics, especially since Freddy explicitly misses him.
- While the Monty Golf ride in the Ruin DLC implies Monty and Bonnie were on good terms and not enemies, Bonnie's dead body can be found in a back room in Bonnie Bowl, covered in claw marks with green paint. It is worth noting, however, that the only animatronic with claws that are painted green (Monty's are black) is Roxanne Wolf.
- It's also worth noting that Monty got his claw upgrade after replacing Bonnie, though even the normal animatronic claws are quite sharp.
- Bonnie also appears to have been bludgeoned with a bowling ball, which suggests damage inflicted by someone who was lacking in physical strength without outside assistance. He is also found in Bonnie Bowl and not Monty Golf. However, the carpet that he's lying on comes from Monty Golf, and the very fact he has claws on his chest proves an animatronic played part in his death.
- Additionally, the Ruin DLC features a Glamrock Bonnie cutout of him seemingly being about fall off and sucked into tornado wave; his damage is quite similar to the ones Shattered Monty (being cut in half, losing a part of his mask, etc.); and Monty is ultimately killed by a Glamrock Bonnie neon sign. This all hints that Bonnie fell off the catwalks the same way Monty did in the base game, and that his fate is supposed to be an ironic punishment for what he apparently did.
- In Help Wanted 2, a mini-game involving Bonnie Bowl occasionally plays a scene of a Monty bowling ball destroying a Bonnie bowling ball with a smug smile. Additionally, mechanical Monty-lookalikes from Monty Golf are threats during the minigame.
- Related to the above, there are also hints he wants to usurp Glamrock Freddy: An arcade minigame features Monty being the center of the stage with Freddy in the trash, and a cutout of Monty playing the bass has a sculpted tornado near it that decapitates a nearby Glamrock Freddy statu, this could be he was brainwashed.
- Montgomery will be promoted to "The New Face of Fazbear Entertainment" of in one of the endings the player can get. His old role is filled by Glamrock Mr. Hippo, who plays the triangle.
- In his shattered form, his eyes changed from red to orange.
- However, in the Ruin DLC, both of his eyes are completely red in color.
- Shattered Monty's jumpscare animation involves him spinning the player around, which is likely a reference to the death roll - a technique real alligators use to disorient their prey.
- While Monty didn't speak and only growled in Ruin, his echoed voice lines can be heard in AR World.
- In Ruin, Monty's bottom part can be found in secret location.
- Monty is the only brainwashed Glamrock animatronic in the base game of SB to be male (not counting Freddy, though it was implied that he was once hacked before venturing into the ruins of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Place and Glitchtrap (as Burntrap) can successfully hack him during the Burntrap Ending should Gregory not do anything to stop him).
- Monty's voice actor Cameron Miller revealed a few things about his character in a Discord QnA. It's unknown if any of those things are canonical or not given that he's not Scott Cawthon or a Steel Wool Studios employee, and anything he says should be taken as "Word of Saint Paul" at best:
- Monty is insecure (supported in-game via his anger issues, temper tantrums, and didn't shows up for show performance).
- Monty is/was jealous of Glamrock Bonnie (very possible given his connections to Bonnie as his replacement and killer).
- However, in a later QnA with YouTuber Dawko, on July 27, 2022, Miller said he does not think Monty was jealous. He also said he does not believe that Monty killed Bonnie.
- Unless one counts Moon merging with Sun as a death (of personality), Monty is the only animatronic in Ruin to be killed and not helped in any way: Roxy redeems herself, Chica can get her voice box back (though nothing really comes out of it other than her no longer being hostile), Freddy escapes the PizzaPlex in the true ending of the base game, and the Daycare Attendant's two personas are merged into one Eclipse.
- The reasoning is because of the fact that Monty murdered Bonnie, which would make him truly undeserving of sympathy. Notably, Monty is electrocuted to death by a Glamrock Bonnie neon sign, which is both ironic and karmic.
- During FuhNaff's 2024 interview with Jason Topolski (one of the creators behind Steel Wool Studios), he claimed that Cassie is unable to help either Freddy or Monty due to them being "too far gone," which means that Monty became too damaged and feral to the point he was completely beyond saving.
- The game files refer to this sequence as "Monty's Death", sealing his fate for good.
- Monty is the only brainwashed Glamrock animatronic who is neither a tragic villain by proxy nor a scapegoat, as he was willingly to committed murder for self-serving and extremely petty reasons and without remorse (and is also plotting another murder), meaning he really deserved his fate of being damaged and eventually killed, unlike Chica and Roxy who were insecure brainwashed pawns. He is also the only one who is not in the grey zone, as there is no evidence that he ever had any noble intentions. This is emphasized in the Ruin DLC, as he is the only animatronic that Cassie feels no sympathy for.
- Monty and the Daycare Attendant (in both Sun and Moon form) are the only animatronics in Security Breach that never refer to Gregory by his real name (aside from the mute ones like DJ Music Man).
- Considering he killed Bonnie, Monty is the only Glamrock animatronic that has at least killed someone (albeit not a human being) since the other Glamrock animatronics only attempted to and were all unsuccessful (in addition to Roxy sparing Cassie when she found out she wasn't Gregory that she was hunting for).
- Monty and Moon are the only main animatronics in Security Breach who have never displayed any form of empathy towards another character; Freddy and Sun/Eclipse are compassionate towards people in general, Chica is visibly concerned for Freddy when he glitches out on-stage and having a bowling ball in her green room as a reminder of Bonnie, and Roxy, despite her ego, has a caring and protective attitude towards Cassie, even showing remorse that she nearly killed her and saves her from the Mimic at the very end of Ruin.
- Monty is the only Glamrock animatronic to be completely absent Help Wanted 2, aside from cutouts and animations. He was supposed to appear in the game, but was cut for unknown reasons.
- So far, he and Roxy are the only animatronics in the franchise to have visible tongues, though Nightmare Foxy had one in the teasers for FNaF 4.
- Out of the four main Glamrock animatronics, Monty is the only one who is not the favorite of a named child character; Freddy is Gregory's favorite, Chica is Ike's (from the VIP interactive novel) favorite, and Roxy is Cassie's favorite.
- In the Ruin DLC, a shrine dedicated to Monty can be found. Monty himself could not have made it due to his condition, so it was most likely made by a human who had ventured into the abandoned Pizzaplex. Said human was presumably a fan of Monty. However, this presumed Monty fan has yet to be seen or named.
- Secret of the Mimic reveals Monty used to be part of the original animatronic band in the 1970s, to the point Edwin and Fiona Murray constructed a springlock suit for him. This could explain why he killed Bonnie, as he was envious he was denied fame and the spotlight for decades on end.
- Additionally, Freddy and Bonnie are the only characters in the Pizzaplex who were created by Fazbear Entertainment; Chica was Chica's Restaurant's original character that Edwin and his wife Fiona helped to design, while Monty, Roxy, the Attendant of both Sun and Moon, the S.T.A.F.F. bots, Music Man, Helpy, and Mr. Hippo (albeit non canon in one of the ending) were all Edwin's characters. This could mean Monty wants to kill Bonnie and Freddy to "honor" his creator, who was unfairly wronged and scammed by the company.
