The Moonshine Mob are minor antagonists in The Delicious Last Course, the DLC sequel for the video game Cuphead. The Mob consists of Hardtop Harold (the leader), Charlie Left Legs, Madcap Maddie, Sidnet The Snout, a caterpillar, and a group of flies. While many bosses in Cuphead have the understandable motivation of protecting their souls and ingredients, the Moonshine Mob are criminals who illegally bootleg alcohol and are not afraid to play dirty.
Biography[]
The Mob are among the many residents of Inkwell Isle IV, and they guard the Distillery Dough, which Chef Saltbaker needs as an ingredient for his Wondertart. They are attacked by Cuphead, Mugman and Miss Chalice while they are in the middle of a brawl with the police, who have found their hideout. Charlie Left Legs goes up first, assisted by the Caterpillar and the Flies. When he falls, he is replaced by Madcap Maddie, who dances while shooting lasers out of a gramophone. Then, in comes Sidnet The Snout, which devours the police force (which consists of ants) while trying to strike the cups with his tongue. When Sidnet is defeated, the boss of the operation, Hardtop Harold, attempts to deceive the cups with a fake "Knockout" sign. After this, he tries to catch them off guard, only to be foiled.
The Moonshine Mob are seen again in the epilogue, and Hardtop Harold is seen shaking hands with an ant cop while the moonshine barrels now have "Baking Soda" written on them. It is not clear if the Mob has reformed or if they are deceiving or bribing the police. Saltbaker, who was exposed as a villain trying to take over the Astral Plane, is now helping them lift barrels as part of his community service.
Appearance[]
Charlie Left Legs' body is grey, and he has a red nose, a green fedora, jacket and he also also has a bow tie and a pair of yellow gloves.
Madcap Maddie is purple with a striped abdomen, red dress and white fur collar.
Sidnet The Snout is brown and wears a green bowler hat. Curiously he appears to have two mouths, with one tongue coming out of his striped snout and another mouth positioned under his nose.
Hardtop Harold has a scar over his eye. His suit is yellow and so is his shell. He often carries a megaphone.
The Caterpillar is green and he wears a lime suit and a top hat.
The Flies wear red shirts and have bowler hats. They also each have one gold tooth and a cigar.
Personality[]
Charlie Left Legs appears gleeful when getting violent, and treats those weaker than him rather poorly, as evidenced by him kicking the Caterpillar around.
Not much can be said about the personalities of Madcap Maddie, Sidnet the Snout and Flies, but Maddie does appear seductive, judging by her various expressions and poses.
The Caterpillar is rather cowardly, as shown by his expression at the beginning of the fight and how fast he flees from the cups.
Hardtop Harold is duplicitous, cunning and unafraid of playing dirty. All of this is proven when he attempts to deceive the player/the cups. He takes losing poorly, indicated by the tantrum he throws when he is defeated.
Trivia[]
- The Anteater appears to be the Mob's secret weapon against the police, as they are ants, his natural diet.
- The Light Bug is theorized to be for seducing the police, as they never go on the same platform as her or try to attack her like they do the Spider.
- Possible inspirations for the Mob include the Anteater from the 1940 short Ants in the Plants as well as various characters from the Fleischer Studios film Hoppity Goes To Town.
- The first two phases of the fight are reworked from fights that were scrapped from the main game. Charlie Left Legs is very reminiscent of the Flying Gentleman, and Madcap Maddie attacks in a similar way to a scrapped boss called The Light.
- The Moonshine Mob makes a historical reference to the Prohibition era in the United States during the 1920s and early 1930s; when the illegal bootlegging of alcohol was common in those times, due to the law outright banning almost all types of alcoholic beverages. To further enforce the theme of the illegal acts, there are cop insects that occasionally appear on-screen during the boss battle, blowing hurtful smoke rings toward Charlie, and not the player.
- In some translation notes for Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course, it is revealed Madcap Maddie and Charlie Left Legs are husband and wife, and that Maddie works as a lounge singer, with her role hinted to be boosting gang morale.
