“ | Dragons old and young, true and false, bright and dark. And you. A small man with a big shadow, snarling in the midst of it all. | „ |
~ Moqorro to Tyrion Lannister |
“ | I have seen you in the nightfires, Victarion Greyjoy. You come striding through the flames stern and fierce, your great axe dripping blood, blind to the tentacles that grasp you at wrist and neck and ankle, the black strings that make you dance. | „ |
~ Moqorro meeting Victarion at the Isle of Cedars, already knowing his name without the latter introducing himself. |
Moqorro, also known as Black Flame, is a supporting character in the epic fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire. He is a red priest of the faith of R'hllor, from the Temple of the Lord of Light in Volantis, where there is possibly the largest following of the god in the world. Having the title of Slave of R'hllor, he was presumably sold to the red temple as a slave at an early age. He is the right hand of the High Priest Benerro.
Appearance[]
Moqorro's skin is described as being black, and not black like a Summer Islander, but literally black as pitch, darker than coal or jet, as if his body was burned yet never consumed by fire. A monster of a man, Moqorro is huge, over six feet tall and as wide as two men, with a belly like a boulder, larger than Illyrio Mopatis. He has a tangle of pure white hair, which grows from his face like a mane of a lion. He has flame tattoos inked across his cheeks and forehead, indicating his status as a Slave of R'hllor. According to Tyrion Lannister, the tattoos are colored yellow and orange, while according to Victarion Greyjoy, the tattoos are red and orange. As Moqorro is also a sorcerer who is capable of performing spells, it is possible that the tattoos actually change colors magically.
As a red priest, Moqorro wears scarlet robes having sleeves, collars, and hems embroidered with orange satin flames. He also carries a tall staff of iron, being as tall as he is, with a dragon's head that spits crackling green flame when brought down. Although High Valyrian is his first language, he also speaks the Common Tongue well, having only a hint of accent. He also speaks modern Ghiscari.
Personality[]
“ | Fourteen or fourteen thousand. What man dares count them? It is not wise for mortals to look too deeply at those fires, my friend. Those are the fires of God's own wrath, and no human flame can match them. We are small creatures, men. | „ |
~ Moqorro and Tyrion, while sailing too close near the Smoking Sea, noticing the red sky above Valyria. |
Moqorro is a very enigmatic and devoted follower of R'hllor and Benerro, who is determined to complete his mission in Meereen. As Benerro's right-hand, he has authority over soldiers of the Fiery Hand. Tyrion Lannister finds him a fascinating character, while Victarion's Ironborn of the Iron Fleet and even the Essosi "Dusky Woman" find him terrifying and view him as an evil monster who prays to demons. Like all devoted red priests, Moqorro performs nightfire ceremonies and prayers every late night until dawn.
Like most inhabitants of Essos, Moqorro refers to the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros as "Sunset Kingdoms". He claims that the Fourteen Flames of Old Valyria contain the pure fire of R'hllor himself and might believe the Doom of Valyria to have been caused by the will of his god. Moqorro dislikes the Drowned God, whose main element is water, and believes he exists but that he is not a god, but rather a demon serving as a thrall of the Great Other, the god of night, cold and death and the sworn enemy of R'hllor.
Powers[]
Moqorro is capable of various forms of sorcery, including strange songs, bloodmagic and firemagic, and can save a man from dying of infection. He is implied to have summoning powers and like Benerro and Melisandre he is implied to be capable of seeing the future in the flames of nightfires.
It is hinted that Moqorro might have used magic to survive the ship wreckage of the Selaesori Qhoran, which was caused by a storm.

“ | Lord of Light, bless your slave Moqorro, and light his way in the dark places of the world. And defend your righteous slave Benerro. Grant him courage. Grant him wisdom. Fill his heart with fire. | „ |
~ Moqorro's nightfire. |
“ | Moqorro: Our captain would prefer to be fifty leagues farther out to sea, well away from that accursed shore, but I have commanded him to steer the shortest course. Others seek Daenerys too. Tyrion: Have you seen these others in your fires? Moqorro: Only their shadows. One most of all. A tall and twisted thing with one black eye and ten long arms, sailing on a sea of blood. |

“ | The iron captain was not seen again that day, but as the hours passed the crew of his Iron Victory reported hearing the sound of wild laughter coming from the captain's cabin, laughter deep and dark and mad, and when Longwater Pyke and Wulfe One-Eye tried the cabin door they found it barred. Later singing was heard, a strange high wailing song in a tongue the maester said was High Valyrian. That was when the monkeys left the ship, screeching as they leapt into the water. | „ |

Trivia[]
- Despite the fact he is being sent by his superior Benerro to defend and support Daenerys, the sorceress from Asshai named Quaithe, who lives in Qarth, warned Daenerys not to trust Moqorro ("Dark Flame"). Moqorro has been sent to advise and possibly even convert Daenerys to the faith of R'hllor, by Benerro, who believes Daenerys to be Azor Ahai reborn and needs to prepare her for the fight against the "darkness" and help her against the Great Other's servants (all her enemies).
- Benerro and Moqorro's mission is the same as Melisandre's mission with Stannis Baratheon.
- In the television series Game of Thrones, Moqorro and his superior Benerro were both cut and replaced with a female character named High Priestess Kinvara, in charge of the same Red Temple in Volantis.
- There is no red priestess nor character named "Kinvara" in the novels, as she was entirely a creation of the show's screenwriters and the closest thing to Moqorro's counterpart, while having Benerro's title. Kinvara took Moqorro's role in going to Meereen to meet Daenerys. However, Kinvara does not have Moqorro's storyline from the novels.
- Kinvara is a one-shot character who appeared only a single episode of the sixth season, then she serves no further purpose and doesn't appear again, thus cutting out Moqorro and Benerro's quest entirely.
