Striga: Soldiers, mercenaries, local forces — what's the difference?
Morana: The difference is that mercenaries can be rehired by the opposing side for more money!
Striga: But... there's no honor in that.
Morana: No, but there is money.
~ Striga and Morana about what set mercenaries apart while revising strategy for their next move.

Morana and Striga are supporting antagonists in the Netflix animated series Castlevania, based on the video game franchise of the same name.

Two of the four Vampire women who constituted the Council of Sisters, Morana and Striga were immortal lovers that ruled over the kingdom of Styria. Striga was a deadly warrior who adored waging war upon the opponents of Styria, and typically led the armies of her kingdom. Morana, on the other hand, had a more intellectual role, serving as a strategist and economist. The pair were often roped into the schemes of their Vampire sister Carmilla, who sought to dominate and take from the world of men.

Morana was voiced by Yasmine Al Massri and Striga was voiced by Ivana Miličević.

Personality[]

Striga[]

Striga seemed to be the most honorable of the Council of Sisters. In addition of having a strict code of conduct and preference to honest and "honorable" tactics, Lenore noted that she'd rather killing her prey straight away and move on instead of playing with it like most of her sisters did. This warrior mentality also explained her surprise regarding any warrior would willingly turn on their employers and benefactors if offered more coin than their initial offer in her conversation with Morana, remarking that "there was no honor in it".

Being often the blunt one, Striga wasn't afraid to share her honest advice with Carmilla, especially if advice in question would truly benefit their cause in the long run. This helped by her role as the Council of Sisters' military tactic genius who not only came up with several highly effective military tactics, techniques and plans to properly police, defend and maintain the national border defenses of their new territories while taking advantage of the chaos of Dracula's rampage, but also easily taking notes on downsides of Carmilla's plans and utilizing Hector's abilities as a Devil Forgemaster which worth considering.

She and Morana have been lovers for a long time, supporting and pushing each other to greater heights and working exceptionally well together, particularly in formulating solid plans. Whereas Striga was in charge of the military strategy, Morana handled supply lines, currency, and mercenaries to support it. It was Morana who helped Striga looking past the hard road that leads to being a queen of Styria and inspired her with the notion that she could soon lead the full military might of an empire.

Although she had little to no respect for humans and possesses no pity or empathy for them — agreeing with Carmilla's orders to have Hector imprisoned in subhuman conditions in their dungeons and referring him as "it", and later approving her said leader's plot to create their "corridor nation" of an "eternal food" supply and had already come up with several plans to imprison and herd the human population into concentration camps — Striga nonetheless acknowledged their willpower and strong desire to survive. Her admiration on such aspects of humanity was more apparent when facing a group of armed human farmers during the survey of the land she wanted to conquer with Morana, seeing how their determination pushed them forward even while facing opponents they have no chance against, rather than live in regret at not fighting back at all against their potential oppressors.

Morana[]

Morana was a genius not unlike her lover Striga while being the chief administrator and organizer of Styria instead of fighter and military strategist. Even like the latter, she wasn't afraid to share her honest advice with Carmilla. Being in close correspondence with Carmilla, she was not only entrusted in running the kingdom while the latter was away, but also the first to embrace her plan and helped aligning Striga to it. Morana was also proved to be the most realistic of the Council of Sisters; following her and Striga's logistical survey of the lands that Carmilla intended to take over, she was quick to realize their leader's conquest was only doable through more peaceful approach instead of force. Just as Striga realized they lacked necessary amount of army to carry out suitable invasion and security forces to police their new lands and building an army of night creatures with Hector's aid as their Devil Forgemaster demanded a gigantic amount of fresh dead bodies which potentially detrimental for their food supply Morana realized the administrative and logistical challenge in conquering and policing an area that was essentially nothing more than open fields and forests where humans could easily escape, hide and regroup in for thousands of years was too immense to be practically possible.

Although she shares most of her sisters' cruelty and penchant to use torture to get her way with enemies, or just for fun, Morana and Striga worked exceptionally well together. In fact, the two have been lovers for a long time, supporting and pushing each other to greater heights. Whereas Striga was in charge of the military strategy, Morana handled supply lines, currency, and mercenaries to support it. It was Morana who helped Striga looking past the hard road that leads to being a queen of Styria and inspired her with the notion that she could soon lead the full military might of an empire.

Even like Striga, Morana found admirable aspects in humanity despite having little to no best opinions in them where in this case, ability, adaptability, and intelligence beyond livestock she and the rest of the Council of Sisters perceived them as. Begrudging it might be, that nonetheless allowed Morana to realize they might going to bite more than they could chew while conquering regions from Styria to the Black Sea by force like what Carmilla wanted, even if they were succeeded in achieving it. The inhumanity and depravity of Carmilla's idea of creating a corridor nation of eternal "self-replicating food" only made it worse.

Morana deeply cared toward her sisters despite being fed up by each of their individual personalities at times, notably Carmilla and Lenore. With the former, she tried her best to realize Carmilla's violent conquest despite already figuring out its impossibility as stated previously in addition of torn between her desire for freedom with Striga and her loyalty to Carmilla, and visibly devastated by Carmilla's death during her battle against Isaac. Similarly, she urged Striga to return to Lenore's rescue following the death of their leader.

Powers and Abilities[]

As vampires, Striga and Morena possess supernatural capabilities known to their race, among which being enhanced strength, mobility, senses, durability, endurance, and immortality.

To get around the fact that she cannot move under the light of the sun without getting burned, Striga dons Day Armor, a suit of crow-themed armor primarily designed to protect the wearer from direct contact with sunlight in addition of protection. The armor comes with a greatsword which, in her hands, a deadly weapon capable of perfectly cut through armored humans on ease. It appeared the armor was one of a kind and that Striga only dons it if the situation calls for it, judging from Morena's pleasant surprise when her lover finally unveils it.

Striga and Morena assume different roles in Council of Sisters. The former is a military strategist, knowledgeable of many things essential for seizing and maintaining up to 800 miles of territory and providing sound insights for Hector in properly developing military force of Styria as its forgemaster. Morena's role as the main Administration Official of Styria is just as important, being the one who in charge of the country's commerce, economy and wealth among other things.

Quotes[]

Morena: (an arrow pierces the spot between her and her lover through the tent, causing them to separate with the latter hisses in pain from the sunlight shining through) What's happening?
Striga: It's an attack. At dawn. They know what we are. And apparently they're not stupid. I need to get to my trunk.
Morena: That one? You never open that. What's in it?
Striga: (
unveils a crow-themed suit of armor inside) Day Armor. Get in the trunk.
Morana: No.
Striga: Arrows can't pierce and light can't get in. Get in the damn trunk, love.
~ Striga unveils Day Armor which she hasn't worn for a long time, much to Morena's surprise.
Over here, dog****rs! (human soldiers charge at her) That's right! Idiot fucking livestock.
~ Striga in her Day Armor provokes human soldiers to attack her to no avail.
