Mordekai the Summoner is the final boss of Serious Sam: The Second Encounter and a mentioned antagonist in Serious Sam's Bogus Detour.

He is an ancient sorcerer and one of Mental's most faithful servants, who resurrected him after his death because he missed him. Despite suffering some brain damage from the resurrection process, Mordekai remains one of the most powerful magicians in the known universe.

Appearance[]

Due to the long robe he wears, all that is visible of Mordekai are his grey-tinted hands and his glowing red eyes. His tattered, grey cloak with bronce trimming features the image of a skull on his chest, which either does or does not have red eyes depending on the version of the game. The crooked staff with which he conjures his spells also differs from version to version, being made of either dark or pale wood and having a red or black orb sitting at its tip.

Biography[]

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter[]

Prior to the events of the game, Mordekai had served Mental for over 3000 years when an accident involving the Necronomicon, 20.000 pounds of Ectoplasm and a mispronounced Latin proverb brought his life to a sudden end. Mental quickly began to miss his faithful servant and resurrected him, though him being a little late with the procedure resulted in some minor brain damage for Mordekai. His revival was nontheless a success and Mental assigned Mordekai the task of teaching his minions in the art of sorcery.

Sam's victory over Ugh-Zan III was unfortunately short-lived, as the Sirian ship which Sam wanted to travel to Mental with crashed back onto Earth due to unforseen circumstances. He ended up in the Mayan city state Palenque and needed to find another way off Earth. The databanks of the Sirian ship told of two time portals in possession of the Mayans and Babylon respectively that could take Sam close to a backup ship that the Sirians left behind when they disappeared. Sam first carved through Mental's forces to get to the Mayan portal, which was guarded by the wind god Kukulkán, and then battled the Exotech Larva beneath the Tower of Babel, whose portal brought Sam to a castle in Poland.

In order to gain access to the Sirian backup ship, Sam had to gain possession of the Holy Grail, which functioned as a key of sorts. The artefact was hidden by an ancient guild of sorcerers known as the Arc-Al-Magi that were allies of the Sirians, but Mental's minions still got to the Holy Grail first. Since they were incapable of destroying it, the Grail was brought to the "Church of Sacred Blood" that the Arc-Al-Magi had constructed. Mental entrusted Mordekai with guarding the relic, whose magic kept the Grail from being detectable by Sam's AI companion NETRICSA.

Mordekai summoned hordes upon hordes to keep Sam away, who against all odds managed to fight his way to the cathedral. With no other choice, Mordekai revealed himself and the two engaged in combat. While the sorcerer possessed no means of attacking Sam himself, he summoned increasingly dangerous minions to attack Sam for him. Ultimately the power of modern weaponry triumphed over ancient magic and Mordekai perished in a large explosion, allowing Sam to take the Holy Grail, make a threatening call to his master and take the Sirian ship to bring him a lethal present.

Serious Sam's Bogus Detour[]

While Mordekai himself makes no appearance, though he's still alive as the game takes place after Sam collects the Sign of Amon-Ra in Serious Sam: The First Encounter, he's the one responsible for the creation of the Lava Golems that Sam has to deal with during the "Trouble in Troy" level. Magically animated masses of lava that split into smaller version of themselves when damaged, the Lava Golems were transferred to live on the volcano planet Struna until Mental has need of them. The Mental-Altani Corporation used drills to pump magma pools onto Troy to provide a comfortable habitat, which they emerge from to attack Sam should he come too close to them.

Trivia[]

  • Even though Mordekai is stated to be the creator of the Lava Golems, it is unknown if this also applies to the main series due to Serious Sam's Bogus Detour being non-canonical.
  • Despite being the final boss of Serious Sam: The Second Encounter, Mordekai is generally agreed to be one of the easiest bosses in the series even on Serious difficulty.
  • The words that Mordekai speaks while casting his summoning spell are random nonsense in Latin, such as "Carpe diem" (Seize the day), "Tempus fugit" (Time flies) and "Coitus interrupus" among others. This is a result of his brain damage.
