Biography[]
After being fired from her job and dumped by her rock musician boyfriend, Emily Middleton insists on going on a non-refundable trip to Ecuador. Her mother, Linda, learns about Emily's situation through social media and urges her to come home to recover. Instead, Linda ends up accompanying Emily on the trip.
In Ecuador, they check into an upscale hotel where Emily meets a handsome man named James at the bar. They quickly hit it off, and after a night of dancing, James invites Emily and Linda on a sightseeing day trip. During the excursion, their vehicle is rammed by a van, and masked men abduct Emily and Linda while James escapes. Linda suspects James's involvement in the plot.
The women wake up in a cell, with Emily panicking and Linda trying to stay calm by reading men's magazines. Hector Morgado, the leader of the kidnappers, contacts Emily's brother Jeffrey, demanding a $100,000 ransom. Morgado orders his nephew to move Emily and Linda to a new location, but they manage to escape and hide in a passing truck. Emily kills Morgado's nephew with a shovel when he pursues them. The truck driver eventually leaves them in the jungle.
They find a phone at a nearby bar and contact Morgan Russell at the U.S. State Department, who advises them to go to the US Embassy in Bogota, Colombia. They encounter Roger Simmons, a rugged American who offers to help. After sharing a meal, Morgado and his men find them. During a confrontation, Linda distracts Morgado while Emily accidentally kills Morgado’s son with a spear gun. They escape on a boat, but are forced off when the captain spots another boat searching for them.
Meanwhile, Jeffrey contacts Morgan at the State Department and insists on helping the agents find his mother and sister. Reluctantly, Morgan agrees. In Colombia, Emily, Linda, and Simmons trek through the jungle until Simmons falls to his death from a cliff. Emily then collapses from a tapeworm infection, which a village doctor removes. Morgado and his men track them down again, and the women attempt to escape using a zip line, but it can only hold one person. Linda forces Emily to go alone and is recaptured.
Emily reaches the US Consulate safely but is determined to rescue her mother. She enlists the help of two feisty American veterans, Ruth and Barb, who take her to James’s apartment. They find James being interrogated for the kidnappers' location. With Ruth and Barb's assistance, Emily rescues Linda. They try to escape in another truck but are intercepted by Morgado. As Morgado is about to kill Emily, Linda blows a dog whistle, summoning a dog that attacks him. U.S. State Department agents arrive to arrest Morgado, and Jeffrey reunites with his mother and sister.
A year later, Emily and Linda take another trip, this time to Kuala Lumpur. Emily meets another man who offers her a drink, but she declines, choosing instead to dance with her mother.
