Biography[]
D'Estaing was a foundling that was adopted by French aristocrats Philippe and Charlotte d'Estaing. They intended for him to carry on the family name, but later had two natural children, including a son, Bernard. In 1803, Philippe informed Morgan that, although he would be given a monthly allowance, Bernard was now their heir and would inherit their titles and estate. That night, Morgan attempted to strangle Bernard in his sleep. Philippe discovered him and, after trying to pull Morgan off, stabbed him in the back and triggered his first death. He was found in his coffin by Xavier St. Cloud, who took Morgan as his pupil and taught him about Immortals and the Game.
Three years later, Morgan and Xavier returned to the family estate, where the d'Estaings were about to flee from approaching English soldiers. Morgan wanted to kill them all but Xavier suspected they still had money and promised to let them go if they handed it over. Philippe told them where to find a casket of jewels. Morgan and Xavier began to leave and Morgan realized Xavier had broken his word and poisoned the family's wine. He wondered if Xavier would one day betray him, which Xavier called the second lesson. As they left, they encountered English soldiers led by Xavier's old Immortal enemy Duncan MacLeod. Xavier introduced Morgan to him. The soldiers found the d'Estaing family dead and assumed it was suicide. Unable to challenge the pair around mortals, Duncan let them go.
In 1996, two years after Xavier had been killed by MacLeod, d'Estaing headed to Paris. He took his girlfriend Angela into a jewelry shop to buy a ring and demonstrated his knowledge of diamonds. When the shop owner brought out the more expensive items, d'Estaing set off a gas grenade that killed everyone present, including Angela, and stole the diamonds, a trademark of Xavier's that caught MacLeod's attention.
Duncan saw d'Estaing hanging around his barge dressed similarly to Xavier and pursued him into a warehouse area, with d'Estaing tricking him into opening a door that led to nothing. The two began to fight but d'Estaing, wearing a gas mask, set off more grenades to give himself an advantage. Duncan escaped being beheaded by managing to swing through a window.
D'Estaing next approached Duncan on a barge restaurant where he was having dinner with his friend Detective Renee Delaney and her French colleague Inspector Dufay. While d'Estaing and Duncan headed out onto deck to catch up, with d'Estaing making it clear he wanted revenge for St. Cloud, d'Estaing had a bottle of poisoned wine delivering to the table. Duncan realised in time to stop Renee drinking it but Dufay had already drank some and died.
Duncan realized the bottle came from the old d'Estaing estate and headed there, encountering Morgan. They began to fight again but this time were interrupted by Renee and the police, who arrested d'Estaing. D'Estaing hanged himself in his cell so the mortal police would believe he was dead, before reviving and walking out of the mortuary.
D'Estaing headed to the apartment building where Renee was saying, with Duncan having accompanied her home. Duncan sensed d'Estaing's presence and confronted him on the roof. D'Estaing made it clear he would go after Renee once finishing with Duncan. The two men fought viciously and Duncan managed to disarm d'Estaing but d'Estaing responded by throwing a poisoned dagger that struck him in the shoulder, noting he'd be dead in thirty seconds. D'Estaing went to retrieve his sword to deliver a beheading stroke but Duncan managed to stagger after him and, with the last seconds of his failing strength, slashed d'Estaing across the stomach before beheading him with a stroke, taking his Quickening.
