Morgana, feared as the Fell Sorceress of Krill Garnash, is the primary villainess and the foremost enemy of the Fighting Fantasy gamebook Masks of Mayhem. She collects the Twelve Sigils, the cornerstone of Creation, to take over the continent of Khul, only to be faced by the Monarch of Arion. But there is more that she lets appear...

About Morgana[]

Nothing is known about Morgana's past and rise to power, but she has ruled the hostile mountains of Krill Garnash long enough to be feared all over and she opposes the local Council of Wizards.

Her emblem is a blood-red "M" on a black flag, and supplementary materials state that she worships the Demon Prince Ishtra.

The Traitor[]

Morgana's right-hand man, hidden in plain sight. While he pretends to be a wise and caring servant of the realm, he is in fact a craven, ambitious and smarmy turncoat, wanting to rule under Morgana, and alone if the Monarch can kill her.

While cautious enough to dispose of threats undetected, his actions drop hints of his true nature, and he refuses to back down when cornered. Whether he was once noble but got corrupted or always was a traitor is never explained.

Powers, Abilities and Influence[]

Morgana is a considerably powerful and skilled mistress of dark magic, who controls monsters and subdues the local wildlings. She can enter dreams, cast curses, and create mighty golems from the Twelve Sigils holding power over all things, among others.

Personality[]

Morgana is cruel, ruthless and relentless, stopping at nothing to dictate her rule to the continent, if not the world of Titan as a whole, just because she can. She is cunning and devious, conspiring with hidden servants to set the pace of the playable character's quest and skilfully trap them.

However, she is very arrogant and haughty, feigning courtesy to mock foes. Also, she is far too overconfident to fathom failure, which predictably plays a part in her downfall.

Role in the Story[]

The story begins when the Monarch of the City State of Arion, the playable character, is warned of Morgana's plot by their Court Wizard Ifor Tynin, who spied on her in astral projection. Should she gather the Twelfth and final Sigil, the Giant Golems she makes from them will be unstoppable and the continent, or worse the world, shall fall.

The quest is very hard, with many tough battles and unforgiving tests whose lost means a game over. Near the beginning, Morgana might appear in the Monarch of Arion’s dream to taunt and curse them, costing them 2 points of luck. At Lake Nekros, the Monarch is attacked by a kraken and must win a test of luck to avoid drowning. The beast's six tentacles are fought independently to strike its head and kill it, each being weak foes with only 6 in skill and 6 in stamina. Destroying the kraken frees the ghosts of its victims, and their leader Galrin pledge their help as a thanks.

The Monarch can also get guidance from a friendly tribe of elves, who teleport them to their next destination. Later, they might kill a dangerous wight with 9 in skill and 12 in stamina to gain its magic sword, granting 1 point of skill. Finally, they must travel to the domain of Fallow Dale and ask its ruler Hever for his evil-weakening horn, in exchange for tracking and killing a powerful sabretooth tiger with 11 in skill (power level) and 12 in stamina (life-points). The beast might break their spear and force them to fight at close range, doubling the damage it inflicts.

At some point, Kevin Truehand, the Monarch's faithful armourer appears seeking them out, but is killed by dark magic muttering a warning. His corpse gets possessed by a dangerous Hellfire Spirit with 9 in skill and 12 in stamina, but each wound inflicted when fighting helped by Hever costs it 3 in stamina instead of the regular 2.

The Monarch must explore the dangerous swamps of Marsh Vile to meet with the Juja, an immortal mage who lives outside of the Earthly Planes. They later need an ancient orb, taken from a skeleton under a lake, whose eye-beams can kill them, and an orb given by a hermit in a ruined shack, to enter the dimension of the immortal mage Vashti the Ageless. She reveals that the Twelve Sigils are worn by masters of a distinct trade, with the Monarch bearing the mightiest, the Sigil of Royalty. Their mission was a trap to get it, but they remain the only one who can stop Morgana. They next need seeds and dragon teeth to exit her dimension, lest they get trapped there for eternity.

Finally, the Monarch must head to the dangerous mountains of Krill Garnash, and face tribesmen under Morgana's thrall. One will try to help them to get rid of the sorceress' tyranny but the other will try to appease her by giving them to her as captive, and they will fight to the death to decide.

The Monarch needs their snow shoes to travel safely and must have bought an Antifreeze Potion. Later, they must kill a powerful Ice Dragon with 10 in skill and 10 in stamina, and venture into his cavern to discover the entrance of the Fell Sorceress of Krill Garnash' lair. Now it is time to settle the score once and for all.

The Final Battle[]

Sigil Golem

One of Morgana's Sigil Golems.

Morgana greets the Monarch with her eleven Sigil Golems, which they can only survive by summoning Galrin's ghost army. Unimpressed, she boast that she can recreate them anytime, cryptically adding that she has the Monarch where she wants.

With 11 in skill and 6 in stamina, and losing only 1 in stamina when wounded instead of the regular 2, she makes a powerful and dangerous enemy. She fights with magic and can see through the Cloak of Temporary Invisibility.

After killing Morgana, the Monarch must have been told about their quest from Vashti the Ageless and deduced the Traitor's identity, lest he kills them from behind. The Traitor is none other than their Court Wizard Ifor Tynin! (The quest was in fact a trap and he killed Kevin Truehand with sorcery.) With only 8 in skill and 10 in stamina, he is pretty much a joke compared to the sorceress.

Having killed Morgana and her wretched accomplice, the Monarch of Arion can return to their land, knowing that the stolen Sigils will return to their rightful bearers' successors, sustaining the world once again and forever.

Trivia[]

Morgana is named after Morgan Le Fay of Arthurian myths, one of the most famous evil sorceresses of fiction, though she was first described as an ally. Like her, she opposes a heroic king set apart from other rulers by a special artefact.
