“ | If someone among us is the witch, then everyone other than the militant member is the witch. Who's the witch? Come forward. If nobody does, then I'll throw everyone into the fire. | „ |
~ Aguni threatening the people of the Beach during the Witch Hunt. |
Morizono Aguni (also known as Agni) is a supporting protagonist in the Netflix series Alice in Borderland, based on the manga of the same name.
He is the Hatter's best friend and first appears as a high-ranking member of the Beach, serving as the Leader of the Militant Core (one of the two factions that control the Beach) until the Ten of Hearts game occurs and the Beach is sent into a state of chaos.
While initially appearing as an ambiguous character, Aguni is later revealed to be actually an anti-hero who temporaly becomes a villain near the end of the First Stage of the series because he is grief-stricken over the Hatter's death and seeks revenge on the people of the Beach for the loss of his best friend. In Second Stage, a fully redeemed Aguni plays a pivotal role in defeating the King of Spades, helping Arisu and the other players beat the games.
He is portrayed by Sho Aoyagi. In the English dub, he is voiced by Harry Standjofski.
Personality[]
Aguni is very harsh, blunt, and reckless as shown by the way he commanded the Militant Core and how he charged at the King of Spades, but in spite of those traits he has a compassionate and remorseful side as shown for how he treated Akane Heiya. He truly cared for his friend Hatter and wanted him to disband the Beach but when Hatter recites the 3rd rule "death to all traitors" and pulls out a handgun, Aguni kills him in self-defense and breaks down into tears right after doing so. He is even very mentally troubled and unstable, during the Ten of Hearts game he falsely outted himself as "the witch" so the rest of the players could kill him. He also cried out "I'm the witch!" while beating and pushing away everyone.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Aguni works for the Special Defense Force in the real world. He and his best friend, Takeru Danma (the Hatter), were hanging out in Shibuya when a meteor hit the area and the event left both of them in a near-death state. This transported them into the Borderlands, but they arrived a couple months earlier than Arisu and the others.
After joining the games as players, the Hatter decided to establish an Utopia in a resort and give hope to the other players. With this, it was founded the Beach, where players would work together to collect all the cards and sent the Number 1 back to the real world. Aguni was one of the founding fathers of the Beach. The Hatter made Aguni the leader of the Militant Core to control the more problematic players in the Beach (like Suguru Niragi and Takatora Samura), keeping the order at the resort.
Eventually, Aguni starts to dislike what the he created with Hatter after seeing his friend ruthlessly beat some Beach defectors to death for hiding cards from him. Then, the Hatter went on to establish a third rule: "Death to all traitors", which led Aguni to realize that his friend was going insane.
Meeting Arisu[]
Aguni first met Arisu at the Five of Spades, he eavesdropped on a conversation Arisu was having with Karube. He taught them that while the Tagger looks intimidating they're still human, telling them they're probably a police officer or a soldier, weighing roughly 90 kilos. This showing that he has amazing intuition and great at analyzing people's appearances.
Karube and Arisu split up, taking Karube under his wing. They decided to create a diversion for the Tagger and he uses one of his men as bait, showing that Aguni is willing to do anything to beat the games. When He again sees Arisu at the Beach, he questions where his friend is and seems to be much colder than when they last met.
Aguni's Takeover[]
A fed up Aguni meets up with Hatter and Aguni asks him to disband the Beach. Hatter, upset with his request, reluctantly pulls out a gun and aims to shoot him, but Aguni ends up shooting him first in the chest. Aguni then discovers that the mag of the gun the Hatter was using was empty, meaning that the Hatter actually planned to be killed by Aguni. Realizing this, Aguni immediately breaks down into tears after killing his best friend. Afterwards, Aguni decides to take revenge on the Beach and everyone in the resort, blaming them for the Hatter's insanity and demise. He usurps power by having his right-hand Niragi coerce the Beach Executives into "voting" for him as the new king of the Beach.
Later, he finds out that Arisu and Usagi were trying to steal all of the playing cards due to Chishiya betraying them and using them as pawns in his own plan. Aguni leaves Arisu to Niragi and his group, who punishes Arisu by having his arms, legs, eyes, and mouth taped due to his visa expiring soon on that day.
Aguni's Reign[]
The Ten of Hearts game occurs and the Beach members rush to the main lobby, and they try to find "the witch" and their objective is that they have to burn whoever they think is the witch and whoever the witch is, is the person that killed Momoka. With this knowledge Aguni askes the witch to step forward, and since no one does he commands the Militant Core to kill everyone and throw them in the fire. While the reasoning for this is to complete the game, the secondary motive from Aguni is that he is taking vengeance on the people who made Hatter crazy. However, once Arisu is freed at first he beats him ruthlessly but Arisu keeps on analyzing him and then exposes him for what he's doing. In a rage he starts falsely outting himself as the witch, hoping he would be killed by everyone. But it's later revealed that Momoka was actually the witch and she was the one who killed herself. When an angry Niragi comes out and starts killing people recklessly and about to kill Arisu, he walks in front of Niragi's bullets and tackles him down.
Post-Beach[]
Ever since the Beach was disbanded by incident, Aguni partnered up with Akane Heiya.
Aguni starts seeing visions and illusions of his old friend Hatter, showing us just how deep his guilt for killing his best friend goes.
Since then Aguni came into another encounter with Arisu but because of Arisu exposing his feelings he decides to keep Arisu under his wing to use him as bait for the King of Spades. After the defense against the King of Spades failed causing severe injury, Aguni wakes up to another vision of Hatter.

~ Aguni to his illusion of Hatter |
Once his illusion of Hatter goes away, it is revealed that his love-interest Akane Heiya was tending to his wounds while he was passed out after the King of Spades launched an assault on them. Highlighting the relationship that Aguni and Akane have. Akane proceeds to go and search for Arisu with Aguni initially staying behind but then proceeds to follow her, out of his care and compassion for her.
He reunites with Akane Heiya, along with Arisu, Usagi, Kuina, and An, this time they make a plan to lure the King of Spades into an explosive trap. Arisu decides to let out a bunch of gas into a drug store so when they set off the explosion it will be much bigger and hopefully enough to kill the King of Spades.
While battling the King of Spades he shows much resistance towards him and proves that they are very similar, as their combat prowess's are very in sync with each other with the main difference in this case being that the King of Spades is more cold and calculated than Aguni. As shown when the King of Spades paralyzes Akane by shooting her body down from top to bottom, making Aguni beat the King of Spades out of anger and rage showing how much he truly cares for Akane.
Once everyone is seemingly incapacitated and killed, Arisu comes out to lure the King of Spades into the gas filled drug store but the King of Spades being overly-cautious once again he doesn't open the backdoor to the drug store. This is until he is forcibly entered by Aguni pushing him forward and pinning him down to give Arisu the moment of chance to detonate the explosion, and with Arisu grabbing him to save his life.
Aguni then comes across the now severely injured King of Spades giving him a gun and silently begging him to take him out of his misery, where we see a brief flashback of the King of Spades past, where he seemingly had to perform a very similar task with what Aguni was given. After the flashback we hear the King of Spades telling Aguni that he is sorry.
“ | I want you to know... I never held it against you. | „ |
~ Aguni's final words to the King of Spades. |
After mercy killing the King of Spades, an emotionally distressed Aguni starts to hold the gun to his head. As he's seemingly about to pull the trigger, he sees another illusion of Hatter but this time much more remorseful to him, saying that he should be begging for his forgiveness and that he should've never forced his friend into a position of power he didn't want.
Final Moments in the Borderlands[]
After Arisu and Usagi cleared the Queen of Hearts game, an option is given to the players of the Borderlands, asking them whether they want to accept or decline citizenship in the Borderlands. Aguni declines the citizenship and a paralyzed Akane crawls over to him, starts cuddling with him and declines citizenship as well.
Return to the Real World[]
Once the players returned to the Borderlands, we see Akane in a wheelchair with her right-leg amputated like in the Borderlands. She passes by Aguni's room, she is asked if Aguni is someone she knows which she says no but later gives a slight smile, a sign that she vaguely remembers Aguni.
