I'm sure there's some children somewhere who'd just love to meet Doctor Futterman.
~ Mother Gooseberry
I WILL TEACH YOU ABOUT DENTAL HYGIENE! I WILL TEACH YOU ABOUT DENTAL HYGIENE!
~ Mother's Gooseberry's split personality, Doctor Futterman.

Phyllis Futterman, better known as Mother Gooseberry, is one of the three secondary antagonists (alongside Leland Coyle and Franco Barbi) in the 2023 survival horror video game The Outlast Trials, a prequel to Outlast.

She is a mentally unstable host of a children's show suffering from a split personality disorder, her alternate personality manifesting in the form of her ventriloquist duck puppet, Doctor Futterman - a twisted caricature of her abusive father. She is also one of the Prime Assets, who enjoys chasing down and torturing test subjects.

She is voiced by Lucinda Davis.

Personality[]

Mother Gooseberry acts much like a caring mother, seemingly caring deeply about any children under her care. However, beneath this is a heavily disturbed personality. She has very twisted views of what a mother should do. She believes that kids should be allowed to be violent, and encourages them to do drugs, to which she even supplies them with crack cocaine. Gooseberry is very violent, and will not hesitate to murder anyone who stands in the way of her teaching. She is shown to be very brutal, often taking enjoyment in hunting down reagents.

Mother Gooseberry has a separate personality that she gives to her Dr. Futterman hand puppet. Dr. Futterman often encourages Gooseberry to commit the many violent acts she does. Dr. Futterman speaks in a very crass and rude tone, often harassing reagents by calling them things such as "chomos". Dr. Futterman is not above insulting Gooseberry, often insulting her appearance and calling her a mistake.

Appearance[]

Mother Gooseberry seems to be quite overweight. She wears a white blouse and a long red dress. Gooseberry seems to be wearing a skin mask of another human that is sewn onto her very face. The top of her head is hairless, whether this is due to balding or other reasons is unknown. On her right hand is her "Dr. Futterman" puppet. It appears as a duck with a top hat and human teeth. Inside the mouth of Dr. Futterman is a large drill which Mother Gooseberry uses to drill into the flesh of anyone unfortunate to stand against her.

Biography[]

Background[]

Ol young phyllis

A young Futterman with a less disturbing-looking version of the puppet.

Phyllis Futterman worked as an assistant under her abusive father at a dentist office. Due to her great charisma, she ended up getting her own TV Show called "The Gooseberry Broadcast" where she would entertain kids and teach them about dental hygiene. In due time, she got her own TV Studio called Futterman Studios. This resulted in her becoming very famous. However, one day, her father mysteriously vanished, and his body was never found. Afterwards, Phyllis began to suffer Hysteria and Dissociation, which only worsened with time.

Eventually, Phyllis began to try to get children into narcotics, violence, theft, and murder. She began to deliver "Dental Drops" to children, containing things such as weapons and drugs. After some time, Futterland Studios was raided by the local police. The raid resulted in the death of two officers and the injuries of several others. It is not known what happened in Futterman Studios entirely, but the police captain commented, "The most grotesque architectural perversion since. H.H. Holme's Chicago Murder Castle."

Eventually, Gooseberry was taken by Murkoff Corporation. There, she was experimented on and driven further into madness. Enduring a multitude of physical and mental tortures, she was selected to be made into a Prime Asset for Doctor Easterman's experiments. She was given a hand drill of her Dr. Futterman puppet, which she began to converse with as if it were her father.

The Outlast Trials[]

Mansion Tutorial[]

Mother Gooseberry first appears in the tutorial, where she stalks the player throughout the mansion. The first direct meeting is when the player enters a play room. Mother Gooseberry is seen holding an apple behind a curtain. Once the player grabs it, Gooseberry grabs hold. She has her Dr. Futterman hand puppet converse with the player before drilling into their hand. Gooseberry is later encountered dragging another reagent. She scalds them for listening to the directions from the intercom before killing them with Dr. Futterman's drill and then tossing them into a grinder. She then walks off before giving the player a menacing stare. Once the player destroys all their personal records, Gooseberry appears and gives chase.

Fun Park[]

Mother Gooseberry serves as the Prime Asset for the Fun Park. There, she is actively allowing (mannequins of) children to commit murder in her ride, the Root Canal. The reagents have to enter and see to it that these children are punished by putting them in a grinder. Gooseberry can first be seen ripping the face off of a person before welcoming the reagents inside. Later, she can be seen in a room full of gore putting faces on mannequins. As the player pushes the misbehaving children to the grinder, Gooseberry drains the water to stop them, and then follows suit, giving chase to the reagents in an attempt to stop them. The reagents must reactivate the pressure valves and avoid Gooseberry to grind the children to punish them. Once her children are destroyed, Gooseberry tries to kill the reagents in rage, but ultimately fails. During the trials she's involved in, she will set up exploding balloons shaped like ducks that inflate to an explosion once a victim stands too close.

Orphanage[]

Mother Gooseberry serves as the prime asset for the orphanage. Here, she is fostering children at a Christian boarding school. She allows the children to do drugs, watch bad influencing movies, and excessively party. The reagents must enter and see to it that these activities are stopped, while avoiding Gooseberry and making sure she does not allow these children to continue to act out.

Trivia[]

  • Mother Gooseberry's name is likely a namesake taken from Mother Goose, a fictional character based in French fairy tales and also English nursery rhymes.
