| ~ Jack the Ripper singing a nursery rhyme to himself, also one of his most famous quotes. |
| “ | During my life I could see the swirl of emotions within the hearts of others. And yet... at the moment of death, only when the body was ruled by fear would that swirl recede, removing all impurities. It was truly, truly a beautiful sight. | „ |
| ~ Jack the Ripper explains to Heracles why he killed all those people in London. |
Mr. Anonymous, better famously known as the fake Jack the Ripper, is a major character in the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok and the main villainous protagonist of its manga spin-off Record of Ragnarok - Jack the Ripper Case Files.
Mr. Anonymous is an assassin who took the initiative in the XIX Century London, killing several criminals and even stealing the identity of the real "Jack the Ripper". He is also the Humans' representative of the Einherjar during the Fourth Round, where he faces Heracles as the Gods' representative of the Gods Fighters.
He is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita, who has also voiced Charlotte Katakuri in One Piece, Asuka R. Kreuz in Guilty Gear, Demon Pillars in Fate/Grand Order: Observer on Timeless Temple, Satan in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Lev Lainur Flauros in Fate/Grand Order, Taiju Shiba in Tokyo Revengers, Skeptic in My Hero Academia and Aureolus Izzard in A Certain Magical Index, in the Japanese dubbed version of the anime adaptation. He is voiced by Jeff Leach in the English dub. His younger self is voiced by Shuri Miyumi in Japanese and David Errigo Jr. in English.
Appearance[]
Mr. Anonymous appears to be an adult man of advanced age, with medium-length silver hair and a silver moustache. He has heterochromia, with a blue left eye and a red right eye, which he covers with a gold monocle with small gears. He dresses faithfully to his time, wearing a formal Victorian Era suit with a white shirt underneath and a blood-red steampunk hat. Mr. Anonymous also wears burgundy trousers and a long blood-red cloak that covers his back, also accompanied by a pair of black gloves.
Personality[]
| “ | Did you turn to evil because of inescapable poverty? Or was it because you suffered a betrayal that scarred you forever? No, those things didn't matter. You gave in to despair and gave yourself over to pleasure. | „ |
| ~ Heracles understands why "Jack the Ripper" became evil. |
Mr. Anonymous's personality consists of being the stereotype of a British gentleman. He presents himself as an extremely charismatic and soft-spoken individual, usually reciting extracts from the Shakespeare poems he reads, but in any case, this gentle and friendly disguise is only a mask for his true personality. In reality, Mr. Anonymous is an extremely sadistic killer who only kills his victims to enjoy the color of the fear they produce before they die. But in depth, it is revealed that Mr. Anonymous's sadistic and twisted personality is the result of a bad childhood he had, in which after discovering that his mother had no feelings for him and only saw him as a tool to get her out of poverty, he had a high level of mental degradation and became the cruel killer he is known as today.
Mr. Anonymous also appears to be an excellent liar, having lied several times to Heracles about his Divine Weapons, seeing it as a combat tactic to defeat the God and have him ambushed in the final act. However, when the fight is over and he meets Göll later, he expresses that he wants to change for the better and move on, also wanting to meet someone who can truly love him. Mr. Anonymous also confesses to Hlökk that he felt sad after killing Heracles, something quite unusual for him, despite having an eye capable of detecting other people's inner emotions. Jack ended up becoming so fond of Heracles that he became furious after seeing Loki summon several copies of Heracles, considering this a huge disrespect towards the Demigod.
But despite his psychotic and cruel nature, Mr. Anonymous seems to have a sense of morality and humanity within him when he is shown helping a vigilante organization in London that used to murder London's most vicious criminals, especially those who sexually abused orphaned children. However, he still decides to take on the identity of the actual Jack the Ripper and for him, he doesn't differ from the original, saying that he could be similar to him if the situations in his life were different.
Biography[]
Mr. Anonymous was born after the Industrial Revolution in the outskirts of London, being the sixth son son out of five aborted unnamed half-siblings of his prostitute mother, Mary, and his father Jack Smith. He spent most of his childhood foraging for food for himself and his mother, since the two lived alone and his father, who had left him, had made a promise to get more money to support them once his sales work get successful. During his childhood, Mr. Anonymous was often looked down on or beaten up by the society of London, such as the owner of a restaurant whose trash bin Jack rummaged through, something that would deeply expose him to the darker side of Humanity, the only thing he cared about and loved being his mother. As a gift from the Gods, Mr. Anonymous since his birth possessed an eye capable of seeing and understanding inner emotions that appeared to him as a color, something that helped him adapt through the neglectful society of London.
The young and future Jack the Ripper is happy to live with his mother Mary.
Whenever Mr. Anonymous returned from his daily wanderings, his mother would welcome him kindly and look after him. She also bought him lots of books, but the one he found himself reading was a compilation of sonnets by William Shakespeare that his father had accidentally left in the brothel they used to live. One day, he found his mother crying. Anne, a work colleague and friend of Mr. Anonymous's mom, told Jack that a playwright called Jack Smith, who had visited her mother 13 years ago, had married a rich noblewoman.
Mary enters through a devastated state and Anne decides to leave the two of them alone. While Mr. Anonymous tries to confront his mother, trying to calm her down and telling her that the two of them can be happy on their own, Mary then shows her true colors to Mr. Anonymous, saying that she should abort him like she did with his five siblings, and also saying that life wouldn't make sense without his father since she only gave birth to him to win his love.
The future Jack the Ripper wanders the streets of London singing a nursery rhyme after killing his parents.
Mary then begins to take her anger out on her own son and also destroys his books, making Mr. Anonymous realize that his mother's color is the same as the corrupt people he has encountered in his life. Having a mental breakdown, Mr. Anonymous overpowers his mother for a moment and strangles her, making her give him the color of fear. Mr. Anonymous, impressed by this and in awe of the beauty of the color, stabs his mother in the throat and watches her anger drain away and be replaced by the color of fear before dying.
Mr. Anonymous leaves the brothel with his mother's blood all over his body, searching for his father and then killing him too. Before becoming a fugitive, the child is joined by Anne while he is on a train who orders him to live.
In the Autumn of 1888, a series of brutal murders began to terrorize the population of London, and the Central News Agency received a parcel from the crime actor who called himself "Jack the Ripper". Meanwhile, the man who would later steal his identity is sitting over a coffee, eating his lunch and reading about his cruel crimes, planning to catch him too. On his other side, a poor young girl called Sophie Lock is selling out-of-date newspapers to try to help her family, Mr. Anonymous approaches the girl and buys one of the papers despite having read a copy minutes ago in the café, much to the young girl's delight and the maid who had served him. A few tables away, a young journalist called Luke Evans and his apprentice Jim Roberts were hurrying to eat their lunch before continuing their investigation into the Ripper. Mr. Anonymous simply looks at them both with his right eye.
Mr. Anonymous kills the real Jack the Ripper and enjoys how dyed in fear he is upon dying.
It is revealed to Mr. Anonymous that Luke Evans was the real Jack the Ripper, who began his crazy murder spree after an incident with his wife, Emma. Luke planned to kill the young Sophie Lock and already had her tranquillized inside his house, but unbeknown to him, Mr. Anonymous was inside too and announces his presence by reciting Shakespeare, causing the killer to turn his attention to him. The two then get into a confrontation and Mr. Anonymous easily defeats him.
He visualizes the beautiful color of fear that Evans produces and then kills him. After the confrontation with the real Ripper, Jack takes young Sophie to safety, also leaving her a huge sum of money to help her out, and ends up burning down Evans' flat, getting rid of all the evidence that would point to him being the Ripper and leaving a mystery about the Ripper's true identity. With this, Mr. Anonymous assumes the pseudonym of "Jack the Ripper" and disperses among the people of London.
Subsequently, Jack the Ripper confronts Chris Highton, a nobleman who is kidnapping orphaned children from London, to stop his trafficking, however during the conflict Jack ends up killing both the nobleman and Alfred, his butler who is actually a member of the criminal organization Mother Goose with the nickname of "Humpty Dumpty". This attracts the attention of the criminal organization, who begin hunting Jack for revenge. After finding him at a puppet show, their leader Noah lures him onto the bridge and ambushes him along with the other members of Mother Goose. Jack manages to fend them off well, but in the end he is seriously injured and thrown into the river.
Here he is recovered and cared for by Luna, one of the orphans that Anne, Jack's friend at the brothel, took care of. So Jack discovers that Anne was killed by a mysterious man and, upon reaching her tomb, he finds Noah, who turns out to be Anne's biological son. Discovering that they both have a connection to Anne, the two decide to enter into a non-aggression pact to track down the murderer with the Ouroboros tattoo who killed Anne: Arthur Gray, the leader of London's crime scene who aspires to become English Prime Minister, as well as Noah's father.
To this end, Luna, understanding Jack's homicidal nature, makes a pact with him: if he didn't kill Noah and only focused on the mission, he could kill her at the end of everything, and Jack ultimately accepts. The two thus infiltrate a ship full of London criminals celebrating the birthday of Pimon, the leader of the Thames Trading Company a criminal organization that aims to subvert the British Empire, and during the confusion generated by the attack of Mother Goose Jack finds and confronts Arthur Gray, who however turns out to be a man with Divine abilities which puts Jack in serious trouble. During the battle, Jack manages to steal the Holy Grail, the relic that the Thames Trading Company had stolen and brought onto the ship, and prepares to escape from the ship before an explosion causes it to sink.
However, during their escape Jack and Noah are joined by Arthur Gray, and they begin to fight him together. Noah immediately attacks Arthur Gray to avenge his mother, but the man manages to knock him out easily and so Jack the Ripper, at Luna's request, intervenes and manages to knock Arthur Gray out thanks to the fact that he has learned his moves given that the man always attacks in the same way. However, when Pimon and other members of the Thames Trading Company arrive to lend a hand to Arthur Gray and take Luna and Gina, a member of Mother Goose, hostage, Jack knocks Noah out with one punch and runs away with him, taking with him the Holy Grail that he pretended to give them.
As soon as Noah recovers, the two, left alone after the capture of all Mother Goose, ask Red Widow, a member of the Sentinels intelligence service, to give them information related to the Holy Grail and they escape an attempted assassination. The two then meet with Pimon, who explains to them how the five organizations that control England are attacking the various members of Mother Goose, which pushes Noah to leave alone to pursue his revenge. Both Jack and Noah then intervene to save Mother Goose member Bogey from Panse and Kaka, who was trying to kill him, forcing them to retreat. Afterwards, Jack and Noah have a meeting with Pimon and the Sentinels, a British spy organization, in which all four form an alliance to take down the British criminal underworld and organize a collective attack on their headquarters.
While the others arrive on the island by splitting into groups, Jack joins them later on an airship and gets involved in the fight against Griffin, but then managing to lose him and go to save Noah from Panse, fleeing immediately afterwards together with Noah. The two, however, are blocked by Cockatrice and her team, who immediately attack them with the complicity of Monk, who betrays Mother Goose and knocks Noah out with a blow from behind making him prisoner.
100 years after Mr. Anonymous' death, the Gods plan out to destroy Humanity, but Brunhilde points out and suggests the Ragnarok Tournament, a clause within the Valhalla Constitution where 13 Humans are in need to fight to death with 13 Gods. To fight the Gods, Brunhilde turns to Mr. Anonymous and asks him to be one of the 13 Einherjar, the peak-human selected warriors to fight against the Gods Fighters' side in the Ragnarok Tournament. Mr. Anonymous accepts and, when Brunhilde asks him what name he wants to be introduced by, he declares that he wants to be introduced as "Jack the Ripper", since he considers himself no different from the real one having killed his mother Mary who was a prostitute. Jack the Ripper was the fourth of the Einherjar to fight in the Arena.
Jack the Ripper performing a forced Völundr with Hlökk.
Before the start of the Fourth Round, Jack snuck up inside Hlökk's room and a few seconds later he strangled her. Hlökk pleaded for Brunhilde's help, since she also was inside the room with them, but she just coldly watched it as Jack forged a forced Völundr with the Valkyrie. Because of his cruel nature, Brunhilde had already chose Jack to be the counter for Heracles even before the Ragnarok Tournament began.
The Fourth Round takes place in XIX Century London as requested by Jack himself, his opponent Heracles accepts his request and both go for the fight. At first, Heracles is offended that his opponent is a cold-blooded serial killer and suggests that he surrender to spare his life and then have a conversation with Zeus to accept the outcome. Jack denies Heracles' suggestion, saying that a gentleman like him should always accept a fight. Jack then pulls out a pair of giant gold-colored scissors and says that it is his Völundr. Heracles, taking the first step, tries to attack Jack, but the killer ends up running into a dark alley, much to Heracles' annoyance. Heracles chases him and comes across Jack sitting down and drinking a cup of tea, which he also offers to Heracles. The God in return refuses Jack's request and sets out to attack him, but Heracles ends up bumping into a partially invisible wire that Jack had laid, causing him to fall into a trap. In any case, the trap didn't cause Heracles any damage as it wasn't a divine weapon. Heracles approaches Jack and intends to attack him with his club, but Jack uses a grappling hook to escape. Heracles leaps upwards towards Jack, swatting his club, who in response uses his scissors to block the attack. However, Heracles' club breaks Jack's scissors, much to the assassin's shock. Jack then recomposes himself and moves away towards a wall, throwing several knives at Heracles.
Naively for Heracles, thinking that the knives were not Divine Weapons, he doesn't even bother to block the attack, but this time the knives end up hurting him. Jack then pulls two knife strings out of his pouches and says to Heracles that it is his true Divine Weapon. Jack continued to throw his knives at Heracles, but the God kept deflecting them with ease. Jack sees this and begins to throws his knives in a curved trajectory, managing to hurt him a few times. Despite the rain of knives he was receiving, Heracles continued to press himself forwards, coming to a point where Jack stopped his attack. Heracles rises his club up and tries to attack Jack, who pulls out an umbrella and spins it round, deflecting the attack, earning Heracles' begrudging respect. The two talk for a moment, Jack asks Heracles what he would do with the evil in front of him, and the God replies that he would crush its head. The God then took instance and used First Labor: Nemean Lion.
Jack attempts to flee once again but he is heavily hit by the attack, however, he manages to survive. The attack's shockwave dislocated Jack's shoulder, but the killer simply shrugged it off and snapped it back in place without showing any pain, calling the experience "Amazing" with a smile stuck on his face. After getting himself back together, Jack began to assault Heracles with his knives and a giant switchblade cluster that looked akin to a boomerang. Heracles destroyed the boomerang in a single blow and charged at Jack whilst blocking the knife-wave. Fleeing up again, Jack jumped into the air and kept going above on piano wires to evade Heracles.
Jack the Ripper's biting rain.
The killer withdraws a couple of knives and taunts Heracles about the rainy weather in London, proceeding to toss all of the knives he held at Heracles, making an allusion to the taunt he made. Because of the piano wires, the knives were hitting Heracles from multiple directions, getting the God cornered.
However, Heracles used Sixth Labor: Birds of Stymphalia and blew away all of Jack's knife and wires to his direction. A few knives managed to perfurate Jack's leg and one of them sliced off his monocle, exposing his right eye. With his monocle destroyed, a excited Jack now said to Heracles that he could see a burst of determination flowing through the God's body, and pleaded him to show more. Jack also explained to Heracles that he could see a bunch of emotions throughout his life and that fear was the most beautiful for him. Heracles responded to the killer that the only thing he feared was the day he would be separated from justice, and nothing more.
Jack the Ripper tosses the Big Ben clock at Heracles.
Jack again continues to throw his knives at Heracles, who deflects them without the slightest effort. He corners the assassin against the large Big Ben building. In response, Jack again uses his grappling hook to escape, but the tip breaks off in the middle of his course, forcing Jack to climb the building with his bare hands. As he climbed all the way up, Jack now held Big Ben's arrows and Heracles smashed the building in half with his club. As the building slowly fell, Jack grabbed Big Ben and threw it towards Heracles, who put out his arm to block the attack, thinking that the clock was not a Divine Weapon.
The clock however slices off Heracles' arm clean, much to his surprise and shock. As the God's proud vanished out of him, Jack reveals to himself and to the audience watching that in fact his Divine Weapon has always been his gloves, and that everything he has been shown so far has been mere bluffing. His Völundr named The Unsettled One is capable of transforming everything it touches into a Divine Weapon, from a small piece of stone to a watch that can seriously injure a God. With this in mind, Jack smiles devilishly at Heracles, who now realizes that the entire London stage is a death trap for him, since everything Jack touches can become a Divine Weapon. The killer then taunted and mocked Heracles, which he ignored with his tenacity, much to the admiration of Jack, who described the God's feelings as gigantic pride with a slight tinge of anger. At this point, Heracles realized that Jack was able to see emotions in the shapes of colors with his right eye.
Jack told Heracles that seeing the color of other people's emotions was his only reason for living, and that it was the gift the Gods had given him. He pointed out that he loved seeing the color of people being overpowered by the color of fear, and that it was a work of art that no one but him could reproduce. Heracles gets angry at Jack's motive for taking away so many innocent lives, in which Jack replied back that the color of fear was a unique beauty and that he would never replace it with another color. The God then says that the killer is lost, causing him to be confused by this statement. Heracles confronts the Ripper by saying that he lost to despair and gave himself instead to hedonism, because of parental negligence and a frowned life.
Upon seeing it with his right eye, Jack the Ripper is shocked by the large amount of love that Heracle has for him and Humanity.
The God assures that he loves Humanity despite it's defects and tells the killer that will save him and free him out of his grief. Jack is perplexed by the color of love that Heracles produces. Heracles throws his club above him as it stands in mid-air, triggering his final labor and ultimate technique Twelfth Labor: Cerberus, summoning Cerberus and fusing with him.
As Heracles was enhanced by the technique, he began to viciously attack the Ripper, who in response used his technique to turn anything on his sight into a Divine Weapon.
However, Heracles had already destroyed all of his improvised weapons and used Great Hero Blow to attack the latter, but Jack managed to dodge the attack. The two continued to exchange powers until Jack was once again cornered in a building, the assassin tried to escape again using his grappling hook but Heracles cleverly this time, jumped up from the ground and smashed him down, causing Jack to be impaled on the thorns of a metal fence. Heavily injured but still alive, the murderer recovers and hides the metal thorn under his sleeve. Jack gets his cloak out of his back, converting it into divinity and slicing the whole building behind him with it, performing his technique Rondo of Blessing. Jack jumps back against the falling building and escapes through a window, the building, which had also been converted to divinity since it was also touched by Jack's gloves, crashes violently against Heracles.
After a moment of silence and tension, Heracles gets up from the building that had been knocked down on top of him and finds Jack having a mental breakdown again. The killer smears blood over his lips, drawing a contorted smile and saying that he wants to dye Heracle's love with the color of fear. The two walk towards each other, Jack converting a piece of wood and a board into divinity to use as a sword and a shield. The two briefly exchange punches, Jack even tries to use the metal thorn hidden in his sleeve, but only ends up scratching the God's face. Now, with Heracles having destroyed his weapons, he throws Jack against a wall, who begins to rave and chant to himself. Heracles admires the assassin's resilience and intends to finish him off, but Jack, with his gloves covered in blood from the wound caused by the impalement, turns the blood into a Divine Weapon, causing Jack to easily pierce Heracles' chest with his bare hands, ultimately performing his finishing technique Dear God.
In his last breath before dying, Heracles embraces Jack instead of finishing him off with a blow, emphasising that he will always love Humanity. The Ripper is then declared the winner of the Fourth Round, he undoes his Völundr, freeing Hlökk who complains about being soiled in blood and also questions how Jack feels at the moment. The killer replies that he doesn't know how he feels, much to the contempt of the Valkyrie, who flies off to clean herself up. Jack makes his way out of the arena and is boo'ed by the Gods audience, as they say he should have died instead of Heracles.
Jack the Ripper saves Göll from being pressured by the Seven Lucky Gods.
In response to this, Jack simply widely grins to himself and leaves to the medical area. Before the start of the Sixth Round, Jack encounters Göll being antagonised by the Seven Lucky Gods, he intimidates the Gods who then leave the scene. The Valkyrie pleases him, displaying an emotion of happiness that reminds him of Heracles' love. Subsequently, Jack retreats to Hlökk's room to watch the next matches of the Ragnatok Tournament together with the Valkyrie, also sharing tea and cake with Hlökk every now and then.
During the Eleventh Round, where Simo Häyhä representing the Humans faces Loki representing the Gods, Jack becomes enraged when he sees the Norse God summoning several copies of Heracles, considering it a strong disrespect towards the Demigod, while later admitting that Loki's copies are capable of deceiving even him, and considering the way Simo Häyhä ultimately defeated and killed Loki to be a great art form.
Powers and Abilities[]
Golden Age: Being a Human soul in the Afterlife, Jack possesses the appearance and abilities he had during his Golden Age, the age in which he was at his peak.
Genius-Level Intelligence and Tactical Analysis: Jack's high intelligence is the main factor behind all his abilities, he is able to formulate plans and even use the environment around him to his advantage, as shown in his fight against Heracles. Jack's high intelligence also makes him highly unpredictable, as shown when he makes Heracles fall into numerous traps of his own making, even turning his own blood into a Divine Weapon to make a surprise attack on the God. Combined with his intelligence, Jack is always extremely analytical when he's in combat, looking to cheat his enemy's weaknesses and even being able to coordinate his attacks in succession.
Masterful Manipulation and Murder/Assasination Methodology: Jack knows very well how he's going to kill his victims, he combines this twisted factor with his high creativity. Jack knew how to fool everyone watching and even his opponent about his Divine Weapons, being a born and skilful liar, hardly anyone suspected he was bluffing the whole round.
Völundr "The Unsettled One": Jack's true ultimate technique hidden in a simple shape. They are a pair of black gloves that he wears capable of transforming literally anything forged by Humans into a Divine Weapon capable of harming Gods.
Weapon Proficiency and Skilled Knifemanship: Practically anything can become a lethal weapon in Jack's hands, and this is greatly enhanced by his Völundr ability. During his confrontation with the real Jack the Ripper, he cut off his arm with a sewing thread. Jack knows how to use his knives very well, demonstrating how he throws them with precision at Heracles during their fight, even making them turn in a curved trajectory.
Peak-Human Conditioning: Considered one of the weakest of the Einherjar, Jack's physical ability is still not to be underestimated, he is able to withstand damage that would be impossible for a normal Human to survive, move at high speed, be strong enough to throw a clock three times his own size with ease, and even be able to briefly confront Heracles and survive, who has strength comparable to Zeus. Furthermore, he manages to compete in physical strength with Arthur Gray, a man considered a Demigod due to his immense abilities that go beyond simple Human strength.
Soul Eye: Jack's gift conceived by the Gods to help him adapt to his future life. His right eye is able to see emotions as colors, he uses this to see how his opponent is feeling in order to manipulate them and also for his own twisted pleasure to see his favourite color when he kills his victims, that of fear. Thanks to this ability, Jack is also able to find anyone's weak point, however, if an opponent like Loki is able to create perfect copies of others, Jack is unable to distinguish the originals from the fakes as the colors are identical.
Organ Manipulation and Arm Extension: This weird ability of Jack allows him to move his own organs at will to prevent lethal damage from being taken. He posessed this ability since from a very young age. Furthermore, as shown during his fight against Humpty Dumpty, Jack can dislocate his shoulder and make his arm drastically grow in size.

Trivia[]
- Although Mr. Anonymous is called "Jack the Ripper" by his own will within the Ragnarok Tournament, in truth he stole this name from real Jack the Ripper and his true identity remains a mystery.
- Mr. Anonymous' emotion sensing ability is based on a real-life condition known as "Synesthesia". People who have this condition usually associate sounds, colors, or words with each other in a "cross-wired" sense. Mr. Anonymous, on the other hand, has a superior version of synesthesia, as it allows him to see people's souls and to know their true feelings and intentions.
- Mr. Anonymous's hat used to belong to his father, which he stole from him after killing him.
- Many of Mr. Anonymous' statements and behaviors appear to be references to some of the suspects for Jack the Ripper's true identity in reality.
