“ | Mr. N. Black... He's a strange one. Truth be told, I ain't even sure if he is alive. Except for Jesse Lynch, who seems to have survived hanging, all the folk who come close to Mr. Black end up dead. True, he is the undertaker of Tarnation and everyone dies sooner or later, but the residents of that cursed city met their fate way too soon. It is said that Mr. Black cannot be killed, because he is already dead. One thing is for sure: whoever went after him was never heard from again. | „ |
~ Sheriff Bartlett's journal description of Black. |
“ | I met this fella there who made my skin crawl! Had himself a funny-sounding name... Mr. Black, I think? He limped as he walked like there was always something wrong with his back. Presumably from carrying too many coffins. | „ |
~ Jebidah Cole talking of his encounter with Black. |
Mr. Black is a minor antagonist in the 2004 RockStar Red Dead Revolver and the boss in one of the missions.
He is the leader of the notorious Black Gang.
After purchasing his Embalming Tools, Black becomes a playable character in Showdown mode.
Biography[]
Mr. Black was the undertaker in the town of Tarnation, which was always the 'odd child' of the territory according to Sheriff Bartlett. One all of the residents of the city mysteriously began to die with no explanation. They were actually getting murdered by being shot down, tortured or buried alive by Mr. Black and the gang of outlaws he made up, including Jesse Lynch, his right-hand. Pretty soon the entire town belonged to him, his Black Gang and he called the shots. Jebidah Cole, now a resident of Brimstone, is the only known person to survive a close encounter, or an encounter in general, with N. Black.
Every time a bounty hunter was send to Tarnation to kill him, they would either fail or Mr. Black would somehow reappear again the next day, leading to a lot of people becoming superstitious, especially Jebidah who claimed that he only survived his encounter because he wore a silver cross that day, according to Fitch.
Eventually, Red Harlow was sent by the Sheriff's Office in Brimstone to take him down in Tarnation. After killing most of the gang members, including Gordon Fowler and Jesse Lynch in a duel, Red headed to the town's cemetery, Mr. Black's hideout, to kill him and the rest of his goons.
After a long shootout which left all of Mr. Black's henchmen dead (either being killed by Red or Black himself for no reason other than being a heartless psychopath), Black himself was finally killed by Red Harlow. He fell into his own coffin as he died. Red slammed the door shut and hauled it back to Brimstone for his reward.
Aftermath[]
After arriving back to town after the mission "The Cemetery" in which he was killed, people of Brimstone will begin to say how he already turned the cursed town of Tarnation into a total Hellhole and how all of his evil deeds have finally been punished, including burying people alive and then digging them out later just to steal their belongings only to bury them back again.
Trivia[]
- Mr. Black is often associated with crows as they can be heard when Red comes to Tarnation, are seen in the opening cutscene of the mission "Cemetery" and N. Black has them drawn on one of his journal images. That is because crows are largely associated with death and represent it in a lot of works of fiction, plus a group of them together is called a murder, something Black had the most fascination with.
- He is not to be mistaken with Sampson Black from Red Dead Redemption II.
- Black kills his own men as evidenced from the mission "The Cemetery", probably just to show his brutality. It is possible that is not the first time he's done it.
- Mr. Black is about 195 cm (6'5'' feet) tall and weighs 82 kg (180 pounds).
