Villains Overview

Mr. Bonzo and Fido are supporting antagonists in DreamWorks Animation's 4th full-length animated feature film Chicken Run.

They are two vicious Manchester Terriers who are guard dogs of Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy's chicken farm as their main task was to guard the farm and prevent chickens from escaping at all costs.

Their vocal sound effects were provided by Frank Welker, who also voiced Thumper in A Bug's Life, M.E.L. in Super Ducktales and Stripe in Gremlins.

Appearance[]

Mr. Bonzo and Fido are slender, muscular Manchester Terriers with spiked collars. Mr. Bonzo has dark brown eyes whereas Fido has light hazel eyes, but otherwise look identical. Because the dogs are from England, they have natural, floppy ears rather than the sharp ears seen on normal American guard dogs, as clipping ears is forbidden in the UK.

Personality[]

The dogs keep order when the Tweedy's are not around and every chicken knows better than to tangle with them. Mean, surly, and vicious they bite first and ask questions later.
~ The dogs' description in the Game Boy Color.

Controversial, alert, vigilant, driven, diligent, sadistic and vicious, Mr. Bonzo and Fido are dedicated to keeping order on the farm so that no one breaks in and no poultry escape. They appear to prefer hanging out with Mr. Tweedy, as he is their main handler and cares the most about them, but they appear to fear and shun Mrs. Tweedy like the plague, implying she is not as friendly to them as she is to Mr. Tweedy.

They adore gravy, as do most dogs; shortly after the pie machine exploded, they are seen licking up all the excess gravy on the ground. Despite chasing the hens, they herd them rather than mauling them, indicating that they are extremely well-trained.

Biography[]

Fido is accompanying Mr. Tweedy as he patrols the fence at night. He then notices Ginger outside the fence trying to assist her pals escape, so he rushes over and drives Ginger away from her friends, causing her to collide with Mr. Bonzo and flee up the stairs of the farmhouse, where the dogs corner her. She tries to use a gnome as a weapon, but Fido bites off the head, and just as they are about to eat her, the door opens, and Mrs. Tweedy arrives in the doorway, questioning why Ginger is outside the gate, to which the dogs howl in fright. During further escape attempts, Ginger and her companions are apprehended by Mr. Bonzo and Fido, including one attempt in which they try to disguise themselves as Mrs. Tweedy, and as the disguise falls off, Mr. Bonzo and Fido chase them back into the fence.

Mr. Tweedy sends Mr. Bonzo and Fido out with him on the night Rocky the Rooster flies into the chicken coop because they heard Rocky fly into the coop and hunt around for what the sound was but can't discover anything. The next day, Mr. Tweedy is out walking the dogs when they notice the chickens learning to fly, which he informs Mrs. Tweedy about, but when she approaches, the hens start pecking, and Mr. Bonzo and Fido flee, fearful that she would hit them. The dogs were seen with the Tweedys watching the chickens stuff themselves with the extra chicken feed in order to be fattened up, before Ginger interferes after seeing through the farmers' intentions. When Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy collect the ingredients for the pie machine and it starts up, Mr. Bonzo and Fido stand outside barking, wondering what's going on inside the barn. When one of them spies Ginger and barks at her, Mr. Tweedy grabs her and drags her into the stables.

When the hens organize their final escape, the rats Nick and Fetcher gather garments from the clothes line to aid in the scheme, which Mr. Bonzo and Fido remain oblivious to. When Mrs. Tweedy falls into the pie machine and causes it to burst, Mr. Bonzo and Fido slurp up the remaining pie gravy. They are watching as Mr. Tweedy throws down the barn doors on Mrs. Tweedy in retaliation for his abuse and continues to suck up the gravy without regard for their cruel mistress.

Other Media[]

CR Dogs (PS)

CR Dog (GBC)

One of the dogs as he appears in the Game Boy Color version.

Mr. Bonzo and Fido also appear in the PlayStation, Dreamcast, Game Boy Color and PC video game adaptations. Similar to their owners, they serve as enemies that must be avoided at all costs.

In the PlayStation, Dreamcast and PC versions, Mr. Bonzo and Fido appear as bosses in the mannequin level, where the chickens controlling the mannequin disguised as Mrs. Tweedy must retain their balance to avoid getting caught by the dogs, while also freeing the other chickens in the process until they reach the main coop.

In the Game Boy Color version, Mr. Bonzo and Fido only serve as security systems to avoid detection, similar to the searchlights used by Mr. Tweedy in the chicken coop levels and the laser beams and magic eyes used by Mrs. Tweedy in the pie machine levels.

Trivia[]

  • According to the Chicken Run Cutting Loose: Behind the Fences at Tweedy's Farm spin-off book, the dog with the darker eyes is named Mr. Bonzo, and the dog with the lighter eyes is named Fido.
  • In Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, Mr. Bonzo and Fido are seen during the recap as Rocky tells the first film's story to his daughter Molly, but much like Mr. Tweedy, they don't appear despite Mrs. Tweedy's return. It's possible that they left her alongside their owner and/or may have died since the first film's events.
  • Despite being Manchester Terriers, Mr. Bonzo and Fido's appearances are more similar to that of Doberman Pinschers or Beaucerons.
  • Their names were never mentioned in the film.
