No one can see you and no one can hear you. Because no one wants to see you and no one wants to hear you. Do you still want to be here, in this world where no one can see your tears or hear you cry?
~ Mr. Bunting gaslighting Rudger into letting him eat him
Imaginaries about to dissapear give off the most superb aroma indeed.
~ Mr. Bunting commenting on how delicious Rudger smells.

Mr. Bunting is the main antagonist of the 2023 anime film The Imaginary. He is a man that imaginary friends fear because he eats imaginaries and will stop at nothing to eat them because he doesn't have an imagination of his own. He is Rudger’s archenemy.

He was voiced by Issey Ogata in Japanese and by Jeremy Swift in English.

Personality[]

Mr. Bunting is an extremely selfish man, willing to eat thousands of imaginaries out of fear of death. He cares for no one, as he treats his imaginary like a henchwoman instead of a friend. Despite this he is rather well spoken, which he uses to give off the appearance of a jolly old man. He is also a sadist, as he enjoys how terrified the imaginaries feel as he eats them. Due to the fact imaginaries are influenced by their human partners as his imaginary resembles a menacing ghost girl, Mr. Bunting was seemingly always evil.

Despite the fact he treats his imaginary as nothing more than a pawn, it’s implied he cared for her at some point, as he supposedly began eating imaginaries so he could always have her around. In the present day, however, he shows no concern when she’s run over by a car and doesn’t even notice when he eats her at first, showing that in the present day, he’s become completely heartless.

Despite being a terrifying sadist, Mr. Bunting reveals himself to be a coward in his final moments, panicking at the fact he lost his immortality.

Biography[]

Past[]

It's said that Bunting has eaten hundreds of imaginary friends so he can keep living for hundreds of years. However, the reason he does this is because he didn't wanna say goodbye to his imaginary and craved for the power of imagination as an adult, so he ate someone else's imaginary. He again does this because he doesn't wanna lose his power to imagine.

The Imaginary[]

Mr. Bunting is first seen entering Lizzie's shop even though the store is closed, he still insists on coming inside because he's giving out a survey about children and how they behave. Amanda and Rudger come down stairs and see the interaction play out and Ms. Shuffleup asks for an ID from him before she takes the survery, he gladly shows it. His creepy associate then signals him as he's talking with Lizzie and sniffs, getting hungry because an imaginary friend (Rudger) is in the same room. He approaches both him and Amanda and they both get frightend. Lizzie then is respectful and tells him she can't take the survery right now but is happy to take it later. He then says the survery is finished and takes a book off the shelf. He then talks about the world being dark and leaves the book shop, saying it smells really nice, humming out of the place. Lizzie then says that he was weird and Amanda starts getting worried.

In the parking lot the next day, Amanda and Rudger run into Mr. Bunting again. Amanda and Rudger get scared, Bunting apologizes for running into Amanda again, and says he's not here for her, but he's here for Rudger, and the line outside the pay station is long, he revels in that fact. Amanda runs away from him and Rudger is then subdued, saying he's a quality imaginary and prepares to eat him. Rudger is terrifyed because he's about to be inhaled by him, Amanda then attacks him with a purse and they both start making a run for it. Bunting's imaginary starts chasing after them and Amanda gets hit by a car because of him.

Bunting is later seen at a resturant sitting down, exclaiming his amora is gone and that when a real person dies, their imaginary also does, he feels sad about it. He then takes a bite out of something in disgust.

Later on after Emily tries to convince Rudger and the other imaginaries in the library that Bunting is just a myth, he denies this and decides to go confront Bunting himself. Bunting is happy to know he didn't dissapear and asks how he survived, and asks if Amanda also survivied, he then says his aroma has changed. He feels no remorse for Amanda's situation, and blames it on Rudger because he was scared and ran away. He then denies them lying about what actually happened, and says it's a matter of prespective. Bunting says that no one can see or hear Rudger because no one wants to see or hear him, and tries convincing him to let him be eaten, he asks if he wants to live in a world where he can't be seen or heard. Rudger says he's wrong, and Bunting tries eating him right then and there. A bus interferes in his plan that Emily and Koyuki are on and Bunting gets annoyed but soon laughs. Rudger runs away from the scene effectively.

Later on, Rudger is knocked off a roof and is met with Bunting, saying he deserves to be eaten and says that if he was eaten he'd dissapear, and Amanda's sadness would dissapear as well. He tells him to think about it but Emily comes in and saves him. Bunting orders him to come back, and his imaginary friend chases after the two of them. Bunting finds them in a dark alley way and approaches them, he says he doesn't want to eat Emily or Zinzan and is only there for Rudger. He then says how imaginaries about to disappear give off the super aroma indeed. He then addressed Rudger and tells him before he eats them that they were different, and that he was imagined and that he is the one who imagines. He says that he's seen several times and places he can't know and seen countless things and untold imaginations. He then says he's eaten all the invisible creations along the way, and that's time for him to stop running and give in. He has his imaginary attack Emily and the two of them fight as well as Zinzan, Rudger soon escapes. Bunting starts approaching Rudger again trying to eat him, saying he and Emily are going to dissapear alone. He then shoots Emily and kills her right in front of Rudger.

In the hospital, Rudger meets Amanda again and sees her on a hospital bed. The imaginary appears in front of them, and Bunting enters the room, the two of them fighting, praying Amanda wakes up. He says he's happy to see him again and soon after Amanda finally wakes up. Amanda then asks who Bunting is, and Bunting tells Rudger and his imaginary to calm down, he says to Amanda everything has an experation date, and says that it's Rudger's experation date. Bunting then taunts Rudger about how Amanada can't see him anymore, but she soon starts to remember who he is and sees the fighting going on. He then tries eating Rudger again in front of Amanda and finally remembers who he is. A tree grows right in the hospital room and explodes of origami butterflies. The room soon starts flooding, and says Rudger was worth the hunt, they then start going on an adventure under the sea. Bunting starts chasing after the both of them. Rudger asks if the boat can fly, to which she says it doesn't, and Bunting falls down the whirl pool, however his imaginary friend grows and tries taking the both of them.

Soon enough Lizzie comes in the hospital room, concerened for Amanda's safety believeing Bunting is a doctor. However he denies this and says he's giving another survery for the children. She then realizes he was the man from her book shop, and orders her to leave because her daughter is suffering. Lizzie gets scared and confused, Amanda tells her that he's trying to eat Rudger. He then says that that's not what he's doing and he's just bringing him to nothingness, returning him to reality. He then threatens to hurt both Lizzie and Amanda if they interfere with consuming Rudger. Amanda tells Rudger to call a dog named Fridge, who is her imaginary friend and says he can help fight off Bunting. Bunting then welcomes her to the world of imaginaries and says she'll fight the snake that's on her. Bunting goes for it and tries eating Rudger again inside the hospital room in front of everyone and almost succeeds. Lizzie orders him to leave him alone and then attacks him with a chair.

Bunting stops for a moment and turns to everyone in the room, telling them to mind their own business and Rudger is just one imaginary. He tells them he should be allowed to eat him, and almost sacrifices him, but Fridge saves him, and his imaginary sacrifices herself and eats her instead of Rudger. He then feels sick after eating her and realizes he didn't eat Rudger. He then disapears in a cloud of smoke in a gruesome way and turns into a photograph that's aging and disintagrates, finally putting an end to his threat against Roger and all the imaginaries he had eaten.
