Mr. Cupcake, or better known as Cupcake, is a major antagonist of the 2023 supernatural horror film Five Nights at Freddy's, the film adaptation of the popular video game franchise of the same name.
He is a vicious and feral cupcake animatronic prop who acts as the stage prop to Chica, serving as both her minion and attack dog while aiding her in working with the other animatronics to hunt down and murder night guards that work at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.
He is portrayed through puppetry by Brett O'Quinn.
Appearance[]
Mr. Cupcake's appearance is mostly similar to that of his video game incarnation, being a small cupcake animatronic prop with pink-frosting, two large eyes, a yellow-striped birthday candle with a vinyl candle-light, buck teeth, no wrapper and black eyelids. He is also shown to have a row of sharp metal teeth on the inside of his mouth, which are only visible when his mouth is completely open. When acting in a hostile manner, his eyes glow orange like the other animatronics while under the influence of William Afton.
Personality[]
Unlike the other animatronics, Mr. Cupcake, despite his small size, is said to be the most aggressive and ferocious of the entire bunch. Unlike the games where he is usually portrayed as an inanimate object, he is shown to be mobile and seems to have a mind of his own. While the other animatronics have the minds of children, Mr. Cupcake is shown to have the mind of a vicious dog, consistently lunging at his victims and ferociously biting or mauling people such as Carl. At some point, he even attempted to attack Jeff by biting through a metal vent when it is blocked from him in an attempt to attack the latter, only to fail.
Mr. Cupcake is extremely loyal to Chica since he is genuinely friendly with her and reports information back to her, even assisting Chica in helping the other animatronics hunt down and kill night guards or anyone who works at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. He is also shown to be a spy when he watches Mike and Abby leave after Mike saves his sister by deactivating Chica via electrocuting her with his taser before jumping onto the latter and aggressively biting his leg to prevent him from escaping. Despite his aggressive personality, Mr. Cupcake, like the other animatronics, is shown to be quite friendly towards children, especially with Abby, whom he seems to befriend and get along with during her second visit to the pizzeria.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Enhanced Strength: Despite his small size, Mr. Cupcake is still strong enough to overpower and knock opponents such as Mike and Carl to the ground with ease.
- Enhanced Speed: Mr. Cupcake is able to run at incredible speed, shown when he sprints toward the office in an attempt to break in and attack Jeff and was even able to catch up to Mike and Abby with ease.
- Enhanced Leaping: Mr. Cupcake is able to jump long distances to attack his victims. Considering that Chica doesn't throw him, it's clear that he has a lot of power in him.
- Sharp Metal Teeth: Mr. Cupcake hides a row of razor-sharp metal teeth which he could use to bite and tear, capable of mauling Carl's face off, biting Mike's leg and even able to take a bite out of William Afton's springlock suit which caused the springlocks to fail.
- Enhanced Durability: Like the other animatronics, Mr. Cupcake is incredibly durable, shown to have almost no weaknesses. When he's electrocuted by Mike with a stun prod, he briefly shuts down, before he reactivates himself, seeming absolutely fine.
Biography[]
Background[]
Not much is known about Mr. Cupcake, though, like the other animatronics, he was created under William Afton, an associate of Fazbear Entertainment and being used to entertain kids. However, after Afton abducted and killed a girl along with four other children which leads to her spirit possessing the Chica animatronic, it is implied that her spirit also possessed Mr. Cupcake at the same time as well.
Five Nights at Freddy's[]
Mr. Cupcake was first found during Mike's first shift at Freddy's. As he explored the place, Mr. Cupcake was discovered by Mike whilst checking the animatronics behind the curtain on the show stage. During Mike's second shift, Vanessa Shelly introduces Mike to Mr. Cupcake and the other animatronics because she wanted him to properly meet them.
After Mike's second shift, Mr. Cupcake and the other animatronics were activated after a group of criminals broke in and began hunting them down. When one of the members of the group, Carl, enters the kitchen, Mr. Cupcake was hidden inside the fridge, shaking it from the inside to get the latter's attention. Carl investigates and finds Mr. Cupcake, but shortly after Chica's arrival, he quickly disappears from the fridge and returns to Chica's plate. Under Chica's command, he lunges from the plate into Carl, ferociously mauling him and resulting in his death after presumably tearing off his face. Shortly after the death of Hank and Carl, Mr. Cupcake was seen on the camera monitors accompanied by Chica and Bonnie. Chica proceeded to lower Mr. Cupcake into the vents, where he sprints across the systems toward the office, attempting to break in and attack Jeff. Shortly after failing to attack Jeff, Mr. Cupcake returns to Chica.
During Mike's fifth and final night shift, Mr. Cupcake assaults him in his next active scene after he saves Abby from being put into a springlock suit by Chica while incapacitating her with his taser, capable of grappling him and taking him to the floor by biting his leg. Mr. Cupcake eventually met mild deactivation when Mike knocks him off his leg and grabs a stun prod before slamming it into his mouth. A few minutes after, Mr. Cupcake returned to activation, standing up upon William Afton's command. Shortly after the image was replaced by Abby, he was back with Chica and was resentfully looking at Afton before lunging into him, taking a bite out of his springlock suit and thereby causing the springlocks to fail. He then is last seen with Chica as the gang carries Afton off into the destroyed pizzeria.
It is uncertain at this time as to what might have happened to Mr. Cupcake along with the rest of the animatronics after Freddy Fazbear Pizza's Place internally collapsed.

Trivia[]
- Unlike the games in which he is usually depicted as an inanimate prop for Chica, Mr. Cupcake is not only fully sentient and autonomous, but is even considered as his own character.
- The only games where the Cupcake is shown to be mobile are in Five Nights at Freddy's 4, Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted, and Five Nights at Freddy's AR.
- It's unknown as to whether Mr. Cupcake is its own individual or merely an extension of Chica's will.
- Mr. Cupcake behaving vicious, feral and dog-like is quite inspired by attack dogs when they are ordered to attack anyone on command while used to be loyal to their masters and defend them. As for Mr. Cupcake, he acts as if he was Chica's guard dog and will kill any intruder that enters Freddy Fazbear's Pizza under her command.
- It's unknown whether he's possessed or not, though if so it could not by be a child, given there are only five spirits. It's possible that Mr. Cupcake is possessed by a dog, as Susie, who possesses Chica in the original games had a dog. His behaviour would lend credence to this. However, his small size means no dog, except maybe a small puppy, could be stored in him, and given possession general requires the corpse of the individual to be placed within the animatronic, it's more likely the spirit possessing Chica attempted to replicate a dog with him.
- Some people on YouTube say that Mr. Cupcake is said to be the most violent animatronic in the film because of his vicious and aggressive personality.
- The original Mr. Cupcake was theorized to be named Carl by fans. Ironically, the goon that the film incarnation kills is named Carl likely as a way to debunk that theory.
- Mr. Cupcake's role in the film is notably larger than his role in the games as he is usually a background prop or easter-egg in the games, whereas the film makes him an active antagonist. This is more evident when he was the one who caused the spring-locks on William Afton.
