Mr. Frog is a supporting character in Adult Swim's animated television series Smiling Friends.
He was the star of his own TV show, The Mr. Frog Show, which is immensely popular among the community in reception. Mr. Frog was extremely mentally unstable, however, and commits many villainous acts throughout the episodes in which he is featured.
He is voiced by series' co-creator Michael Cusack, who also voices Grim, James, Rex, Bosnian Homer, Ketchup, Witch Hand, Plump Demon, Jeremy, and the Skeleton Pirate Captain in the same series.
Appearance[]
Mr. Frog is a short, portly, and oddly proportioned green humanoid body with no neck or head, his face instead being on his chest. He wears nothing except for a brown pair of shorts and has hands and feet that resemble flippers. His eyes are constantly wide open and he is often smiling.
Personality[]
Mr. Frog is impulsive and highly unpredictable. Although he is generally externally nice and friendly, he is known to hurt others at a moment's notice with little to no provocation due to habits amplified by his constant use of a certain drug. An example would be how he asks to pull Pim's "hair" (really an exposed nerve ending). Pim declines, but Mr. Frog pulls it anyway, apathetic to the immense pain this causes Pim.
His impulsive violence is especially worrying due to the fact he is also shown to be incredibly powerful. He has the ability to wipe out towns full of people in a matter of mere minutes, and also killed hordes of psychotic pro wrestlers instantly without moving or doing anything at all, making him the #1 UFC World Champion after a single match. He is also shown to be extremely fast, with most of his movements happening within the blink of an eye and winning multiple Olympic marathons. Not only this, but as President of the United States, he conquered the entire world through brute force and charming charisma, becoming the Emperor of the World. He also became the single richest person in the entire world due to his celebrity riches, extreme popularity, and political power. Despite all this, Mr. Frog is not very intelligent, and often needs explanations to the simplest of statements
Despite his crimes, he is also by far the most popular and famous person in the world. People all over the globe seem to unanimously love him, with some even asking him to have sex with their significant others and having seemingly no issues with Frog’s constant destruction or murders. His impulsive and unprovoked violence, extraordinary and seemingly unmatched strength, blinding speed, unrivaled wealth, legendary charisma, and dominating diplomatic power make him the most powerful, most successful, and most dangerous person in the Smiling Friends universe.
Much of Mr. Frog's behavior can likely be attributed to his drug problem. He is shown to be addicted to a purple cocaine-like substance, which he is seen snorting shortly before attacking the fan at the meet-and-greet. He uses this substance again while at the shooting range with Pim and Charlie. He also seems fond of sleeping pills.
Though Mr. Frog is mostly unashamed of blatantly committing his actions, he is nonetheless capable of feeling remorse. Although he insisted that he is not going to apologize directly to the TMZ reporter for attacking him; an incident which greatly damages his public profile, he still sincerely apologized for it after every other attempt to revive his career failed to his fans. It is highly possible that this too can be attributed to his drug addiction, as when he accidentally maims a woman while coming down from his high, he does appear to be genuinely horrified at what he has done.
The one thing you can give Mr. Frog is that he's honest, as he bluntly said he would not waste time apologizing for attacking someone who would likely never forgive him. Although he didn’t apologize to the man, his sincerity was shown by his willingness to still apologize for it on air to his fans for disgusting them with his abhorrent behavior.
Biography[]
Season 1[]
At the start of the episode, Mr. Frog is fired from his popular TV show after an incident where he attempted to eat a TMZ reporter and had the man in his mouth for seven minutes. Sympathetic to Mr. Frog's plight, Mr. Boss assigns Pim and Charlie to go to the disgraced celebrity's lavish mansion to cheer him up.
Each of their attempts ends in disaster. When they organize a meet-and-greet to give fans a chance to know "the real Mr. Frog", the drug-addled Mr. Frog strangles a fan for, who simply asked for a photo together, claiming said fan was "insulting him". Their next attempt to help is having Mr. Frog present a giant cheque to a charity. However, Mr. Frog is suffering from withdrawal as a result of them forcing him to quit drugs, and Mr. Frog accidentally slices off the charity representative's hands with the cheque's sharp edges (one of the only times Mr. Frog expressed any kind of remorse for hurting someone, as for once, he genuinely didn't mean to). Finally, they book an appearance for Mr. Frog on the Jimmy Fallon show, things go well at first, but than Mr. Frog gives a racial remark that only made things worse.
Now blacklisted and deplatformed, Mr. Frog realizes that the right thing to do would be to apologize for the TMZ incident, which he'd previously declared that he wasn't sorry for (he still isn't). He goes to the taping of The Mr. Frog Show and attempts to apologize when his producer angrily tells him off, saying he's being replaced. Mr. Frog's only response is to immediately eat him whole, killing him in the process. While Pim and Charlie express concern that the man's death may be their fault (it probably wasn't), the audience loves it and Mr. Frog's status as a beloved celebrity is restored. While he is offered his job back as host of The Mr. Frog Show, he instead chooses to start a new show where he has complete creative control.
Season 2[]
Mr. Frog launches a presidential campaign running against the highly unpopular President Jimble. During his presidential announcement ad, he is shown performing many villainous acts such as beating up the host during an interview, eating a baby, robbing several stores, and dumping toxic waste into a nature preserve. Despite this, he proves to be very popular and leads Jimble in the polls in every single state. It is revealed that Mr. Frog is the favored candidate of a secret society of worms who run the world, as they like his chaotic nature. However, once they learn that frogs eat worms, they instead switch to backing Jimble. Despite the presidential debate being blatantly rigged against Mr. Frog, he still manages to defeat Jimble in the election once Glep casts the single deciding vote. As Mr. Boss had bet money on Jimble winning the election, he leaves with a gun, declaring that whatever happens next is "on Glep", presumably intending to assassinate Mr. Frog. It's unclear why Glep voted for Mr. Frog, but it seems pretty valid due to presumably being a longtime fan of him.
In the episode "Erm, The Boss Finds Love?", a YouTube video on the sidebar of the Daniel the Demonslayer video Charlie is watching is entitled "PRESIDENT FROG BEST MOMENTS II", likely indicating Mr. Boss' assassination attempt was unsuccessful.
Season 3[]
In the episode "Le Voyage Incroyable de Monsieur Grenouille", Mr. Frog successfully conquers the entire planet to become the supreme emperor. Realizing he's achieved everything in life, Mr. Frog becomes depressed as there was nothing more for him to do. As such, he resigns from presidency and gives the role to a random peanut since he ate the vice president. Pim and Charlie find Mr. Frog at a bar and offer to help him in finding a new purpose in life. They take him to the Ultimate Fighting Championship to become a fighter, winning the challenge without moving once as all of his opponents die upon colliding with him.
At the park, Pim tells Mr. Frog about family, convincing Mr. Frog to return to his swamp and visit his parents. He is greeted by his father, telling him how his mother passed away from cancer months back, critiquing him for never contacting them after he became a TV star. Mr. Frog comes to a dreadful realization that his mother was dead and his father wants nothing to do with him for disgracing their family name with his own show. After being kicked out and no longer welcome back to the family, Mr. Frog angrily smashes several trees, roaring super loudly before sitting and crying on a lily pad to meditate. In his mind, he is greeted by the Bug of Knowledge who tells him that he found inner peace. Mr. Frog eats the bug, causing him to experience visions of his life, before metamorphosing into a realistic frog and says "Goodbye," ready to start a new chapter for his better and happier life.

Trivia[]
- A Mr. Frog action figure can be seen on Shrimp's shelf in the episode Shrimp's Odyssey.
- According to Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack, Mr. Frog was one of the first Smiling Friends characters ever created. Mr. Frog was created for an entirely different show that would have centered on him and his antics as a celebrity, but the idea was ultimately scrapped.
- Zach and Michael have previously stated in an interview that Mr. Frog is not actually a frog at all, but a demon, with "Frog" just being a legal surname and not related to his actual species.
- This has since been called into question, as he's shown to have had a very frog-like background in Le Voyage Incroyable de Monsieur Grenouille, having grown up in a swamp, been birthed from a tadpole, and later became an actual frog in his rebirth. It could be that he's only part-demon, or that Zach and Michael simply changed their minds on this fact since his debut episode, as it was never directly stated in the show that he's a demon.
- Mr. Frog does bear a resemblance to the mythical Blemmyae people, who are headless with facial features on their torsos like Mr. Frog. Furthermore, they are described as cannibalistic and savage in Shakespeare's Othello, matching up with Mr. Frog's man-eating and anarchic tendencies.
- The scene in Mr. Frog's political campaign where he throws a grenade at a group of people, disintegrating them into skeletons, is a reference to the 2002 Spider-Man film, where the Green Goblin kills the Oscorp board members using one of his pumpkin bombs in a similar fashion.
- As candidates for the US presidency must be at least 35, this means that Mr. Frog is older than that age, though it's also possible that he somehow bypassed this law with his immense influence and wealth.
- It's revealed that Mr. Frog saw the Challenger Shuttle Disaster live on TV as a child, making him in his late forties.
- Mr. Frog is reminiscent of Pepe the Frog, a notable topic of discussion in Zach Hadel's podcast. Like him, he's a frog defamed by right winger politics, and his has his own "Frog Con" (in reference to "Pepe Con").
- Many aspects of Mr. Frog take clear inspiration from Donald Trump, the 45th and 47th president of the United States:
- He was popular on TV before running for president.
- He is a generally an objectively horrible president and person, which many people perceive Trump to be in real life.
- Charlie's phone background in Squim Returns is an image of Mr. Frog holding his fist in the air triumphantly below the American flag as he bleeds from his "ear", which is a reference to the famous photo of Trump taken seconds after his attempted assassination in 2024. This implies that someone attempted to assassinate him at some point before Squim Returns (likely Mr. Boss, who stated he would attempt an assassination after it was revealed Mr. Frog won).
- Mr. Frog's ambition to conquer the whole world may be a comedic exaggeration of Trump's frequent and unconstitutional threats to annex Greenland.
- During Mr. Frog's flashback before turning into a normal frog, for a split second an image of him posing with Jeffrey Epstein is seen, referencing Trump's former friendship with the late sex trafficker.
