Mr. Philip "Phil" Gilbert is the main antagonist of the E4 comedy series The Inbetweeners and a minor character in the film duology. He is the corrupt, sadistic and wrathful year head for the 6th years of Rudge Park Comprehensive.
Throughout the series Gilbert makes it clear that he is an unwelcoming and intimidating man who often bad mouths and ridicules his students, seeing them as nothing more than brainless idiots and taking full advantage of situations where he can punish them for anything. He has a specifically bad relationship with William McKenzie, Simon Cooper, Jay Cartwright and Neil Sutherland and strangely hates Will the most despite him being a rather responsible and intelligent student, this is evident from his blackmailing and physiological abuse towards Will of whom he gives to far more than any other character in the series.
By the end of the series he is relieved to finally get rid of the year 6 students although he keeps his job within the school and takes on another group of 6th years who he presumably treats in the same way.
Gilbert's roles in the movies are rather small, with him only briefly appearing in the first film during the farewell to the sixthformers, openly expressing his happiness that they are leaving and no longer being responsible for them, and later when he is married to Will's mother in the sequel.
Mr. Gilbert is a no-nonsense, sadistic, rude, sarcastic and cruel man who cares very little for his pupils and clearly hates his own job, he is often seen frustrated and impatient with the pupils and even their parents on occasions and cares very little about school events, charities, etc.
Gilbert is viewed as an intimidating person by most of his students and is often joked to have a large penis due to his intimidating and large presence. He is also known for his heavy wit and sarcasm and usually roasts his students on a daily basis.
He also doesn't care about bullying and often even harasses and torments his own pupils, even preparing to punish Will McKenzie for "grassing" on one occasion, this is also shown when Will's mother Polly attempted to get Will a new work experience placement after the workers at his current one threw him in lake with nothing but his underwear on, Gilbert couldn't contain himself upon hearing this story and laughed intensely.
He also has a clear attraction to Will's mother and even becomes engaged to her in The Inbetweeners 2 much to the Will's horror.
Despite these factors Gilbert does have a small moral conscious as he does usually protect students from Mr. Kennedy's attempts to groom them.
