Fred Gold is a minor antagonist in the Sonic the Comic Online! webcomic. He is the leader of S.P.E.A.R., a paramilitary group infamous for its violent methods in combating Dr. Robotnik's forces. It's later revealed that, while he does truly want to defeat Dr. Robotnik, he is guided by ulterior and selfish motives.

Fred Gold was once a scientist employed by Dr. Robotnik, helping him enforce his rule over Mobius and transform people into Badniks because he saw the doctor as someone who would bring order to the planet. However, when Robotnik planned to create an army of Cyberniks, mind-controlled Mobians in cyborg suits, he used Gold as a test subject. He escaped, though was presumed dead by Windy Wallis, and plotted his revenge while simultaneously intending to take over Mobius on his own terms.
Sonic the Comic Online![]
During the war with the New Robotnik Empire, S.P.E.A.R., a paramilitary organization created by Mr. Gold, emerged. They fought the invaders with dedication, but sometimes crossed the line by using lethal force, violently dispersing anti-war protests and using EMPs to attack Badniks in proximity to civilians. Amy Rose initially believed S.P.E.A.R. to be a false flag set up by Robotnik, but was proven wrong after meeting Mr. Gold in person. At the same time, the League of Super-Evil Villains hired an assassin to deal with Gold, but he tricked and defeated him.
After Doctor Genius and Windy Wallis were arrested, Gold visited them in prison and offered them a chance too "atone" for their crimes against Mobius by assisting him in creating a Cybernik army for his operation "Final Glory". While the preparations were being made, Gold had Percival Kane run propaganda for his orgnization. When Amy Rose infiltrated S.P.E.A.R., she discovered that Genius and Wallis were converting certain recruits into Cyberniks, and was captured by the militants. As Gold's prisoner, she learned of his backstory and plans to enforce his will on all of Mobius while depriving Robotnik of a chance of victory. As he began deploying Cyberniks, however, Kane had second thoughts on supporting him, realizing that Gold's vision went against his interests, and teamed up with Tails and Captain Blue to stop him. In Gold's lair, he had to fight the two as well as Amy. Amy destroyed Gold's cybernetic hand that gave him powers, and he was subsequently bested in combat, while Tails shut down his machine, foiling his plans. Gold was arrested, lamenting that the "last hope for Mobius" had died, while S.P.E.A.R. was disbanded.
Personality[]
At first glance, Fred Gold appears to be a well-mannered gentleman who just happens to be ready to resort to violent means for the sake of the greater good. This, however, is just a facade for a delusional control freak who envisions a planet bound to the will of a single man. While he's normally soft-spoken, even when angered, he can lose his temper if pushed too far. Despite his cruel methods, and the fact that he was fully on-board with working under Robotnik tyrannical rule until becoming one of his victims, he believes himself to be right and his plan to be the only hope for the planet to live on.
