Harold Longman, also known as Mr. Green, is the secondary antagonist of the 1974 film The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. He is a former motorman for the New York City Transit Authority who takes part in the hijacking of Pelham 123.
He was portrayed by the late Martin Balsam, who also portrayed Martin Lombard Senescu in The Twilight Zone, and James Arthur Cummings in Mitchell.
Biography[]
Prior to the events of the film, Harold Longman was a former motorman for the NYCTA but was involved in a drug bust that caused him to get fired.
At beginning of the film, a disguised Mr. Green boards the Pelham 123 subway at 59th Street station. When the train reaches 28th Street, Mr. Green and his associates hijack the front car of the train and hold all the people on board hostage, demanding a one-million-dollar ransom by one hour or they would start killing the hostages minute by minute. Because of his knowledge as a former subway motorman, Mr. Green is able to control the train. Mr. Green was also sneezing periodically during the hijacking and the negotiations as he had a cold.
After receiving the ransom money, Mr. Green drives the train to an emergency exit before overriding the train's dead-man's switch, causing it to move by itself with the hostages still on board. Mr. Green and the others then remove their disguises and put on new ones to remain undetected when they reach the surface. He manages to escape with his portion of the money (along with Mr. Grey's) while the rest of his associates are killed.
Later at his apartment, Longman was enjoying his share of the money when he is visited by Zachary Garber and Rico Patrone from the transit police. When asked about the subway train, Longman denies any knowledge of it. But just as Garber and Patrone start to leave, Longman sneezes before Garber reopens the door and stares at him. Longman's fate is unknown, but he is presumably arrested for his role in the hijacking.
