~ Mr. Hopp to Ruby. |
Mr. Hopp is the titular main antagonist of the Mr. Hopp's Playhouse indie horror game series.
He is a doll that was possessed by a demonic creature created by the Entity, becoming one of his subordinates. Taking the form of a toy rabbit, Mr. Hopp came into the possession of many children, with the most notable being a girl named Esther and later her granddaughter, Ruby.
He was voiced by Moonbit.
Appearance[]
As a toy, Mr. Hopp is a small, cute yet creepy stuffed rabbit with a pair of teeth and a scary grin, a red bow tie and blue pants. He has light gray fur, yellow eyes, light gray ears (pink inside) and a white mustache. Mr. Hopp has the ability to transform and take on different forms during the games in which he appears. His most prominent appearance is that of a tall, humanoid, demonic figure. In this form, Mr. Hopp is much larger than his toy form. He still retains most of his original appearance, but has the clawed hands and monstrous grin of Mr. Stripes and Miss Bo.
Personality[]
Being a creation of the Entity, Mr. Hopp is completely loyal and obedient to his master. He seems to have little personality, as many of his traits reflect those of cruel, sadistic, and cunning creatures. To hide this, Hopp can pretend to be a toy and show enough intelligence.
Biography[]
Brought to Life[]
Mr. Hopp and two other toys, Mr. Stripes and Miss Bo, originally belonged to a girl called Isabelle that the Entity encountered and delivered the necklace of the Six, an ancient magical necklace once worn by Pharaohs and discovered in 1876. Isabelle was, however, executed and burned at the stake under the accusation of being a witch. The Entity took his pity out on her by reviving her three dolls, Mr. Hopp, Mr. Stripes and Miss Bo, and has been channeling its spirit through them ever since.
Mr Hopp's Playhouse 2[]
Mr. Hopp had his first meeting with child Esther in one of the recurrent nightmares he had at an orphanage he stayed at in Blacklands Manor Orphanage. Esther's nightmares take her to wander the corridors of an empty orphanage but upon reaching downstairs she hits a dead end and is forced back upstairs. However, as Esther turns back to go the other way, the rabbit's shadow appears, turning into a giant monster. Where she once found a dead end, it is now a never-ending corridor as Esther runs as fast as she can with the image of a giant hand fast approaching her. There is no escaping from its grasp, which causes him to awaken from the nightmare.
Next morning, Mrs. Beverly, head of the Blacklands Orphanage, distributes boxes containing donated toys to kids. A box with a panda and tiger toy is inside, along with the rabbit doll. When Esther picks up the rabbit toy, she has a nightmarish vision and says that she feels like she has seen it before. Esther has two friends, Molly and Isaac, who refer to the Panda toy and the Tiger toy as Miss. Bo and Mr. Stripes, while Esther calls the rabbit Mr. Hopp.
Esther finds Molly and Isaac in the dining room on the ground floor to determine what they will do in disguise. Esther begins to count, placing Mr. Hopp on a table by the elevators. In doing so, Esther then reconnoiters her friends. After this game concludes, Esther goes to regain Mr. Hopp, only to find that he seems to have fallen, but Esther comes to the conclusion that she merely pushed Mr. Hopp over a ledge.
Mr. Hopp's left eye considers Esther as she sleeps. Esther wakes up to find that Mr. Hopp has disappeared. Esther hears some spooky music and follows to find out where the sound is coming from to discover the location of Mr. Hopp, who is in the kitchen. She asks, looking a bit uneasy, how he got there. On return to the nursery with Mrs. Hopp, Esther is caught by Mrs. Beverly, who tells her she shall be sent down to the basement the moment she gets out of bed again.
Yet again, while sleeping, Esther gathers six different symbols in another nightmare. Immediately upon collecting the first symbol, the music box of Mr. Hop will turn on. Along with toys, obstacles, and traps, Mr. Hopp is a spawn who hides in the open areas; though only he-faced and bow ties can be seen. Standing in the clearing is dangerous when Mr. Hopp is nearby. If Mr. Hopp reaches Esther before he manages to escape Gold, he will get captured. Collect the last symbol and Mr. Hopp will disappear. After collecting all the symbols for putting out the fire and fighting off the unknown creatures, Esther wakes up from her nightmare to eventually show an image of Mr. Hopp among other things.
When Esther accuses Mr. Hopp of relocating her and apologizes to Molly for her disappearance, theWIN. places her in a mission to recover the soccer ball belonging to another orphaned child. Billy informs Molly where she is if he sees her. Esther finds the soccer ball in an orphanage storage room. Mr. Hopp is sitting behind another cardboard box, apparently unfound by Esther. When Esther gets the ball, she goes back to Billy, passing the wardrobe in the middle of the barn. Then Mr. Hopp comes out of the closet and grabs Esther. Esther struggles to break free. Otherwise, the ester is returned to the last checkpoint. On waking up, if he's safe, Mr. Hopp will let him free, but Esther rejects this as something that might have been for real, telling him to just go back to sleep.
Esther can't find Molly and Isaac anywhere, so she reports them to Matron Ruth. Ruth says they have hidden somewhere and she will deal with them accordingly, so they shouldn't worry and go back to bed. Mr. Hopp, Miss. Bo, and Mr. Stripes are all seen watching from the shadows as Esther goes to bed.
After Esther succeeds in freeing herself from prison, she wants to go back to bed; that is when she meets an empty hallway where she meets Mr. Hopp, Miss. Bo, and Mr. Stripes scaring with music. When Esther meets Dee, forcing her to do a ritual that requires so many items, Esther has to go out to gather items while avoiding the three curses patrolling each floor in this orphanage. Mr. Hopp is patrolling upstairs and will start chasing Esther once he sees her.
When she wakes up in a clearly unfamiliar place, Dee has to find out who she really is and locate keys three in number that open a door. Esther must also avoid Mr. Hopp, who walks through the space of an empty place. Soon enough, Esther runs into another room where Isabel is, only Mr. Hopp grabs her and lifts her up. When there's no turning back, waking up, Esther walks right into the path of fire. Mr. Hopp and two other of the Three Cursed appear on this route, who all observe Esther.
Then if Esther manages to collect all the six and reaches the underworld, she has to rescue the kidnapped orphanage residents and defeat a three-headed giant monster created by the three curses centered on Mr. Hopp. After Esther destroyed the two heads that remained, Miss. Bo and Mr. Stripes, Esther destroys his head as well and thus sets everyone free.
Between Mr. Hopp’s Playhouse 2 and 1[]
In 12/9/2018, an elderly Esther who is still in possession of the Six is seen sitting contently in her house, until she hears the music of Mr. Hopp, who appears from behind her in the darkness as a worried expression appears on her face. As the credits roll in Mr. Hopp’s Playhouse 2, an image of Esther giving Mr. Hopp to Ruby is shown.
Then, when Esther passes away on 20/9/2018, Ruby becomes scared of Mr. Hopp and starts shooting him, to which her parents take her slingshot away.
Mr. Hopp's Playhouse[]
Mr. Hopp was given to Ruby by Esther. After Esther's death, the rabbit mysteriously comes to life one night and goes on a murderous rampage around the child protagonist's home, presumably killing her parents, since Ruby notices three claw marks over the parents' bed. Mr. Hopp stalks her across the house, forcing her to engage in a deadly game of hide and seek in which she must continually evade the monstrous rabbit, who has grown into a human-sized rabbit with sharp fangs.
During her travels around the house, Ruby uncovers more about the origins of Mr. Hopp via old tapes found around the house, which explains that Esther was becoming increasingly unhinged in her final days, eventually forcing her to be admitted into hospital due to mental unrest. It is revealed via an ominous message on the wall that Esther was actually driven mad by Mr. Hopp, who also likely caused her death in hospital. As Ruby collects more tapes, Mr. Hopp deteriorates, losing his eyes and changing his crooked smile into a vengeance-filled scowl.
Eventually, Ruby manages to find the combination for her father's safe and obtains a slingshot (in the game's previous version it's a gun) which she uses to pursue Mr. Hopp into the basement, where he tries to attack her via a slow and lumbering walk, only to fade into shadows after being shot several times.
However, this does not stop Mr. Hopp as the demon takes the form of the deceased Esther to lower Ruby's guard before transforming into a gigantic monster and pursuing her again to play with him.
Endings[]
Escape Artist (old version)[]
Ruby manages to escape the home just before the demon can capture her and she seemingly finally rids herself of his evil presence, though at a high price as armed police arrive and take her away, possibly arresting her under the assumption that she murdered her parents. The last scene depicts a crime scene investigator picking up Mr. Hopp, who is once again a seemingly harmless toy.
Escape Artist (new version)[]
Ruby manages to escape and is taken away by the police. She looks up her bedroom window while in the police car to see Mr. Hopp sinisterly grinning at her, heavily implying that he will target anyone who gets into the house from that point onwards.
Firestarter[]
If Ruby manages to pick up a lighter and gas during the game, she'll be able to light up a piece of cloth and burn down the house as the game progresses. After escaping the house, Ruby will watch as the house burns down with Mr. Hopp pleading and begging her to save him, but Ruby just stays there and looks at how the fire consumes Mr. Hopp, killing him for good.
Sleep Tight[]
After discovering the murder of her parents, Ruby decides to go to bed, dismissing what she has seen as a nightmare, and when she does so, Mr. Hopp looms over her bedside and presumably kills her.
Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 3[]
On October 18, 2019, Mr. Hopp stepped on Ruby first as she went to get a drink of water before turning off the lights. When Ruby goes to bed, she knocks on the door, and Ruby opens the door.
As Ruby progresses downstairs and through the maze that has become her home, Mr. Hopp arises from behind the wall and jumps down to scare her into the Underworld. After rescuing Esther, Mr. Hopp emerges from the shadow corridor and chases Ruby and Esther down a long hallway, but as the door closes and sends them through it, Ruby and Esther are separated from him. He appears later as a ghost in the Infinite Staircase, sometimes hunting Esther prior to fully meeting him in boss battles such as the maze in which Esther shall trigger several pressure plates to escape. The three Curses are killed, and with the six Curses, Esther is able to defeat her inner demon, quite literally becoming a lifeless doll to obtain the final medal.
