Stop hand

Yes, panic! Would any of you gentlemen care to deny that if this juicy little scandal leaked out now, the annual shareholders' meeting would resemble an orchestra of scorched cats. Result? Bankruptcy all around.
~ Mr. Jorkin mocking Mr. Groper and Mr. Rosehead in triumph when Scrooge and Marley manage to get him out of lawful trouble.

Mr. Jorkin was a minor antagonist in the 1951 film, Scrooge, which was based on the classic Charles Dickens novel, A Christmas Carol. He was a deceptive and unscrupulous businessman who was the employer of Jacob Marley and Ebenezer Scrooge (though technically became the latter's second employer after Mr. Fezziwig) who was also the one who influenced Scrooge to put finance above all else in life, resulting in Scrooge's trademark greed and misanthropy.

He was played by the late Jack Warner.

Personality[]

Mr. Jorkin was basically like Scrooge, being extremely greedy and callous to those who suffers from his actions. Unlike Scrooge though, Jorkin was willing to commit a felonies. such as embezzlement, in order to obtain more cash. Also, unlike Scrooge, Jorkin had more charisma when doing business, even when his crimes were exposed, he remained as calm and confident as he always was.

We also seemed rather smug, as he brags to his associates about Scrooge and Marley bailing him out of trouble once his crimes were nearly exposed.

Biography[]

Mr. Jorkin is first seen during the Christmas Past segment where he visits Mr. Fezziwig in an attempt convince him to sell his company due to hitting financial snags, but Fezziwig refuses to do so out of principle. This was witnessed by a younger Ebeneezer Scrooge, who was working for Fezziwig at the time. Sometime later though, Fezziwig is forced to sell his company to Jorkin's moneylending firm and Scrooge ends up working for Jorkin, who introduces him to Jacob Marley. Their time with Jorkin soon filled their desire for wealth and detachment from human connections. Jorkin soon embezzled from his own company, which ended up going bankrupt, but did not go unnoticed by some business acquaintances Mr. Groper and Mr. Rosehead.

Soon, a hearing determining on this matter is held with Groper, Rosehead. Scrooge and Marley in attendance. Mr. Groper and Mr. Rosehead have every intention of making Jorkin's crime public to see him punished for it, but Scrooge and Marley tell the two that doing so would end up potentially bankrupting them by extension since they are associates of Jorkin. Scrooge and Marley settle the affair by buying Jorkin's accounts on the condition that they end up running his place. Despite losing his business, Jorkin mockingly brags about being left off the hook thanks to his former clerks and presumably retires a rich man who got away from the law.

It's likely he died during the preceding years of his near arrest but unlike from before, he was punished for his greed in life via being bound in chains that represent his unchecked offenses like what would happen to Marley after he died many years later.

Trivia[]

  • His name might have been inspired by the character of Mr. Jorkins from Oliver Twist, another Charles Dickens novel.
