Mr. Man is a minor antagonist in the adult animated series Smiling Friends. He is a deformed racist who falls for the manipulations of the Frowning Friends in the titular Season 1 episode.
He was voiced by Lyle Rath, who also voices the IGBG CEO in the same series.
Biography[]
Mr. Man is a pale humanoid with a misshapen, dented head, yet a manly, burly frame, a physique he possibly exercised to gain in order to compensate for his deformity.
His misshapen head makes him very insecure and constantly torments him, which make him an easy target for Grim and Gnarly, who work for the Frowning Friends Organization and seek to spread misery, nihilism and fear of self-improvement. They tell Mr. Man that he should be ashamed of his appearance and he shouldn't do anything to adress it.
Mr. Man is later visited by Pim and Charlie from the Smiling Friends, an organization that, on the contrary, seeks to improve people's lives and cheer them up. The Smiling Friends come knocking on his door, but are frustrated to find out the Frowning Friends reached him before them, and Pim can only give half-hearted attempts at making Mr. Man feel better about himself. However, since Pim and Charlie look and sound very similar to Grim and Gnarly respectively, Mr. Man wrongfully assumes that the Smiling Friends are actually the Frowning Friends trying to gaslight him and yells at Pim and Charlie to "get out of his head". During his mantra, his head and voice inexplicably turn into those of DJ Spit, a character who had previously reacted the same way when visited by the two companies, and he points a gun to Pim and Charlie, who run away.
Later that day, Mr. Man, now back to being himself, attends a public speech by Grim, who spurs the crowd of followers he and Gnarly recruited to spread the nihilistic, misanthropic word of frowning, destroy all happiness in the world and eradicate all Puerto Ricans, but glosses over the last point when he sees that most of the crowd is baffled by it. Pim tries to debate against the Frowning Friends, but he and Charlie are arrested by Allan and Glep, their former colleagues who briefly became guards for the Frowning Friends due to a superior 401k.
All seems to be going smoothly for the Frowning Friends until Mr. Boss, the boss of the Smiling Friends who has been driven insane by his competition's success, confronts Grim with a rifle to kill him. In spite of all of his talk of nihilism, Grim immediately starts begging desperately for his life, even urinating himself, and the crowd is shocked and disappointed to see that the Frowning Friends are actually cowardly hypocrites and they all leave. Before leaving, Mr. Man admits that he actually would have liked to kill all Puerto Ricans like Grim suggested, revealing himself to be much more heinous than he initially let on.
Trivia[]
- Mr. Man's voice actor, Lyle Rath, is a member of the gameplay Youtube channel OneyPlays alongside Zach Hadel, the co-creator of Smiling Friends and a voice actor to many of the characters.
- A common joke among people who are fans of both OneyPlays and Smiling Friends is that Mr. Man's lines weren't scripted and that the creators had simply recorded Lyle Rath while he was rambling insanely.
