~ Mr. Munshun talking to Charles Burnside about the Crimson King.

Mr. Munshun, also known as Lord Malshun, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Charles Burnside) of the Peter Straub and Stephen King collaborative novel, Black House.

He is an inter dimensional being that works for the Crimson King. Mr. Munshun possesses serial-killers in the real world in order to kidnap children with special powers known as Breakers.

In the story, Mr. Munshun possesses Charles Burnside in order to capture a powerful Breaker by the name of Tyler.

Appearance[]

Mr. Munshun appears to have an "impossibly" large white face with sharp teeth and a singular sharks eye. Mr. Munshun's gigantic head obscures the rest of his body, his limbs being shorter than it. Sometimes he appears to have two eyes and/or orange hair, but he typically only appears with one eye and a bald head. He is said to have red lips, "fangy" pointed teeth, and long pointed fingers. In terms of attire, he wears an evening suit and a red ascot.

Characteristics[]

Mr. Munshun is an inter-dimensional humanoid and loyal servant of the Crimson King. Mr. Munshun's existence is mainly based around serving the King, regarding him in high honor as seen when talking about him with Tyler. Mr. Munshun exists in a dimension known as the End-Worlds. He is specifically situated in a region called the Furnace-Lands, where he oversees a giant power plant powered by enslaved children known as the Big Combination. Also in this area is a structure he built for the murderers he possesses, whom are able to kill there victims there without issue.

Mr. Munshun possesses a henchman known as Gorg, whom he summoned from the End-World. Mr. Munshun uses Gorg in order to help kidnap children from the Earth dimension.

Mr. Munshun connects himself to the real-world through cannibalistic serial-killers that take on the role of his host body willingly. Mr. Munshun allows them to kill whomever they want, and in exchange they must bring all Breakers they find to him.

Mr. Munshun possesses a name that is not able to be pronounced by human tongue, but is close to the title "Lord Malshun". His voice is described as a Frenchman trying to imitate English in a German accent.

Biography[]

Past[]

Over the years, Mr. Munshun had possessed a variety of serial killers, including Fritz Haarman and Albert Fish.

Black House[]

Mr. Munshun makes his first semi-appearance when Charles was talking to Rebecca. During his conversation, Mr. Munshun took over and began to talk to her. Assuming this was a trick, she told Charles that she wasn't falling for whatever he was doing. This is when Mr. Munshun made Charles wake up and snap out of his trance.

Briefly before he made his next appearance, his voice could be heard during a 911 tape that Henry had listened to. Mr. Munshun again appears as an alternate personality of Charles to Henry. Mr. Munshun talked to Charles about Jack Sawyer, whom Charles wanted to kill. Mr. Munshun insisted that Jack was already dead, and then he went on to talk about the Crimson King. He mentions how he is loved most by the king, and in response Charles tells Mr. Munshun that he would like to meet the king.

Mr. Munshun later appeared again in the Black House while Charles was in pain. Mr. Munshun wanted Charles to bring Tyler to the Station like how he did with the other special children. In order t get him to do this, he first began making promises of having Charles turned young again. After the conversation progressed, Mr. Munshun reached into Charles' chest and began twisting around the man's intestines in order to torture him. When Charles finally agreed to go through with Mr. Munshun's wishes, he disappeared.

For a while, Mr. Munshun had left Charle's while he went to retrieve what he called an "End-World mono". Tyler would continue to receive visions of Mr. Munshun until their physical confrontation.

Eventually, Mr. Munshun finds Tyler. When he does, Tyler begins to scream, but he uses the "Dark Speech" work "Phung" to make Tyler go limp. He grabbed Tyler from behind and began telling him about how he (Tyler) was going to have the distinguished honor of meeting with the Crimson King for cake and coffee. When Tyler began to cry, Mr. Munshun tried to pacify him by telling the boy that he would make friends with the other Breakers. After he was finished talking, he put the boy under his arms and gave Charles' deceased body one final look (he had been killed earlier while Mr. Munshun was not present). While taking Tyler away, he is stopped in his tracks by four men, whom of whom was wielding a weapon known as the Globe of Forever. Mr. Munshun attempts to deal with them by telling them that he must move past them in order to deliver a package, that package being Tyler. He then shook Tyler, the others demanding he be set free.

After being addressed by his first name, Mr. Munshun insists that anyone by that title or by related titles was "gone". He also insisted that he could not let go of the boy, shaking him again and proceeding to lift the boy near his teeth. Once he was near his teeth, he began to nibble on the boy. This causes the man with the club to step forward, and in response Mr. Munshun uses his Dark Speech on the three other accomplices, but they manage to overcome it. Overwhelmed by anger, Mr. Munshun suggests that he could kill Tyler. The man with the bat gives Mr. Mulshun another chance, and calling his bluff Mr. Mulshun demands that they use the weapon, because it's power would also hit the boy. Contrary to what he thought, the energy was able to hit Mr. Mulshun right in his singular eye, blinding him. He shrieks and goes to bite down on the boy, but another bolt hits him in the mouth. After this, Dale is able to get Tyler away from Mr. Mulshun. Mr. Mulshun is finally finished off when the man with the bat smacks him on the side of the head with it, causing Mr. Mulshun's head to explode.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Possession - In order to make contact with Earth’s dimension so that he can collect Breakers, Mr. Munshun has the ability to possess human hosts. These hosts are typically cannabablistic serial killers whom consent to his possession. While possessing a host, Mr. Munshun acts as more of a second personality , having the ability to talk to the host in their heads. He has been known to be able to take over the hosts consciousness, as seen when talking to Rebecca.
    • Dimensional Travel - Through possession, Mr. Munshun is able to travel from one dimension to another.
  • Dark Speech - Mr. Munshun has the ability to use “Dark Speech”, which are words that act as spells. Mr. Munshun used the word “Phung”, which allowed him to make his victims unconscious. This ability is somewhat weak, as some were seen to be able to resist the word’s power.
  • Strength - Despite his size, Mr. Munshun was said to have been strong. This is demonstrated when he was able to easily carry Tyler’s half-conscious body under his arm.

Trivia[]

  • Although Charles is clearly his pawn, Mr. Munshun is described as Charles' dearest friend and his loving master.
  • While Tyler was in a cell, his living essence was able to spiritually communicate to Mr. Munshun, causing him and Charles to feel resentment for the boy still being alive at the time.
  • It was revealed by Charles that Mr. Munshun had handled all of Charles' finances.
