We all have our lot in life. I used to want to change the past, but you can't, can you? All you can do is build a new future. Can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs, right?
~ Theodore Peterson

Theodore Masters Peterson, better known as The Neighbor or Mr. Peterson, is the titular main antagonist of the Hello Neighbor franchise.

A living in the American neighborhood of Raven Brooks, he is the secretive, reclusive, and arguably insane neighbor and arch-nemesis of the main protagonist, Nicky Roth.

In the past, he was an amusement park designer, as well as a very friendly and happy family man; however, after tragically loosing the majority of his family, Mr. Peterson was driven mad with grief, leading him to keep the last remaining member of his family safe by locking him in the basement of his house 910 Friendly Court.

In the early versions of Hello Neighbor, he was voiced by an unknown voice actor while in the final game, Hello Engineer and Hello Neighbor: Hide & Seek, his vocal effects were provided by Brett Weaver and then by Armen Taylor in Hello Neighbor 2 and Hello Neighbor VR: Search and Rescue.

Biography[]

Past[]

Mr. Peterson was once an amusement park designer and a very friendly family man who lived with his wife, Diane Peterson and his children, Mya and Aaron Peterson. He once let a younger Nicky see and befriend his son. However, due to a horrible car accident, Diane had to be hospitalized. Mr. Peterson became anxious, waiting in the hospital until his wife eventually died in there. Not long after, Aaron accidentally pushed Mya off the roof of Mr. Peterson's house, leading to her death. With the losses of his beloved wife and daughter in such a short period of time, these two incidents severely crippled Mr. Peterson's sanity.

Hello Neighbor: Hide and Seek[]

Mr. Peterson plays a minor role in this game as the game focuses more on his two children, Mya and Aaron. Mr. Peterson is seen at the dinner table along with his wife and two children. Mr. Peterson is seen again entering the house with his wife’s purse, and lets it go before collapsing to his knees. Mya and Aaron hug their father to comfort him; however, this wasn't enough as Mr. Peterson became more sluggish, watching TV and appearing not to notice his daughter's concerned look for him even though she was right in front of him. He appears again to get the children for dinner, motioning his hand tiredly. At dinner, Aaron takes Mya's spoon before pushing her and causing her plate to fall and break. Seeing this, Mr. Peterson gets up and sends Aaron to his room, but before he leaves he takes Mya's doll. Mya goes to get it back but Mr. Peterson motions his hand to tell her to stay and eat dinner. Mr. Peterson is seen one final time during the credits, burying Mya in the backyard. After he finished, he mourns over the loss of his daughter.

Hello Neighbor[]

Act 1[]

Mr

Mr. Peterson locking Aaron in the basement.

In his house, Mr. Peterson, after some difficulty, forcefully locks Aaron in his basement to prevent him from getting hurt. However, the former was unaware that his son's screams had gotten Nicky's attention. Mr. Peterson then finds out that Nicky is watching him and throws him onto the other side of the road as he goes to lock the basement door and hide the basement key. Nicky has to outsmart and evade Mr. Peterson and eventually finds the key to the basement, which has been converted into a dungeon. After reaching a corridor, after solving some puzzles, he was caught by Mr. Peterson. Nicky tries to escape but the door at the end of the corridor is locked with three padlocks, with the keys nowhere in sight. This allows Mr. Peterson to catch Nicky.

Hello Neighbor: Secret Neighbor[]

Mr. Peterson has successfully captured Nicky and has locked him in his basement, so six kids and friends of Nicky (known as the Rescue Squad) decide to rescue him and Aaron. Like Nicky, the Rescue Squad must outsmart and evade Mr. Peterson to help Nicky escape as Mr. Peterson doesn't intend to let him go and now wishes to imprison the intruders who dared to invade his property. Mr. Peterson will disguise himself as a child to pick off the children one by one unless the kids manage to find out which one of them is Mr. Peterson. However Mr. Peterson in this game is not truly Mr. Peterson, and is actually the Shadow Man in disguise. It is not known why this is the case.

Act 2[]

The opening cutscene reveals that Mr. Peterson has kidnapped Nicky and has been possibly torturing him. Trapped in a room in the basement, Nicky sits for a few seconds before Aaron comes by and unlocks the door. Once leaving the room, Nicky can easily climb out of the basement using a ladder. He has to once again outsmart and evade Mr. Peterson, this time to escape his house, now with some additions, notably two new floors and a massive fence around the entire property. Using a key, a trampoline, or a crowbar, he can break out in three different ways. Once Nicky finally escapes, Mr. Peterson comes out to chase him, but hears a window breaking (implied to be Aaron escaping). Rather than continuing his pursuit of Nicky, he instead closes the wooden fence gate while threateningly staring at Nicky, who already reached his own house.

Hello Engineer[]

Mr. Peterson is trying to figure out how to cause time loops at the Golden Apple Amusement Park until four members of the Rescue Squad, also of the Inventor's Club, entered the park, as they came to look for spare parts for their invention. At first, he was unaware that they were in the park and just continued on with his work. Later, he tried to make a rollercoaster car go through a spark of strange purple energy as part of a test experiment but failed. That evening, as he traversed the main plaza of the Golden Apple Amusement Park, the Inventor's Club were forced to hide and quietly sneak through without getting caught. Unfortunately, however, their cover was blown when a clown robot scared Martiza Esposito, a member of the Inventor's Club, which caused her to decapitate it with her bat. This got Mr. Peterson's attention, but before he could even catch the kids they shine a light in his face, allowing them to flee. Finding them running to the Wild West zone of the park, he calmly followed them, as he had already prepared several traps there.

When the Inventor's Club reached the entrance and were about to continue onward, Mr. Peterson, in an attempt to trap them, activated one of the traps, in which the floor where the kids stood on gave way, causing them to fall into a hole. When they managed to continue onward, he activated an obstacle course to stop them in their path. Later, after the kids successfully went through more obstacles using their high intelligence and skills in mechanics, Mr. Peterson decided to deal with them himself. In a small arena-like area of the Wild West zone, the Inventor's Club found him riding on a small train he had built. After they stopped him in his tracks, Mr. Peterson began using the train's cannon to attack the kids but was defeated when they used TNT to destroy his train, which also seemingly killed him.

However, Mr. Peterson is soon revealed to have survived. As he worked on a new invention of his, the Inventor's Club, who watched from a window, proceeded to sneak into the abandoned Outer Space zone, which is also where Mr. Peterson is currently working. Later, he finished his creation, a drone that flies via a propeller and can shoot lasers. Mr. Peterson had produced several more drones so that he could try and kill the kids. However, they managed to destroy all the drones, allowing them to safely continue on. Later, in the final part of the Outer Space zone, they were forced to defend themselves against a giant robot spider, Mr. Peterson's deadliest creation, which he controls via a controller. In the end, the Inventor's Club defeated the robot spider, much to the anger of Mr. Peterson. In the ending of the game, after the kids finished their invention, which is a race car, they were unaware of the surging purple energy through the nearby electric posts and Mr. Peterson successfully puts the Inventors Club in a time loop.

Hello Neighbor 2[]

Prior to the events of Act 3, when Quentin, a local journalist from the big city, who was sent to work for the Raven Brooks Banner, was investigating a series of disappearances in the town of Raven Brooks, he came across Mr. Peterson holding his son Aaron hostage. Quentin began using his camera to take a few photos to use as evidence. Noticing this, Mr. Peterson forcefully took Aaron inside his house of 910 Friendly Court before closing the door behind him. After a few seconds, Mr. Peterson comes out with a shovel in an attempt to kill Quentin, but the latter managed to escape, though he barely managed to, as Mr. Peterson had smashed the window of Quentin's news van, nearly hitting Quentin in the process. Later, after the latter escapes from a barn, Mr. Peterson knocks him out with his shovel before stealing his camera so that he'll not bring the photos he had taken to the police. The next morning, when the authorities did show up, Mr. Peterson was forced to go into hiding, taking his son with him. At the abandoned museum, the latter makes it his hideout while converting its attic into a prison to keep Aaron locked up.

However, Quentin discovers this when he received a paper plane from Aaron, who wrote on it a crying message for help and then following a trail of more paper planes to the museum. Mr. Peterson appears to Quentin in a nightmare; after Quentin passes out after feeling dizzy, he wakes up in the Raven Brooks Banner. When someone began to intensely bang on his door, he went to get his flashlight from under the bed. Upon looking under, he finds Mr. Peterson, who then jumps out and grabs Quentin before the latter wakes up again. Later, Mr. Peterson once again appears in another nightmare; in the museum, after Quentin picks up a photo of the Peterson family it changed into a photo featuring only Mr. Peterson and Aaron. Quentin then finds himself snapping photos of the latter two as they stood outside their house. When storm clouds began to appear, Quentin notices that another written plea for help is written on Aaron's shirt. No longer smiling, Aaron is now seen crying as Mr. Peterson, who is strangely still smiling, drags his son into 910 Friendly Court. As a raging storms occurs, Quentin attempts to follow them but before he could reach them a flash of light caused him to be catapulted onto his bed, which suddenly appears below him, and Quentin mysteriously wakes up again in Raven Brooks Banner.

Returning to the museum, Quentin has to avoid Mr. Peterson while at the same time solve various puzzles in order to access the museum's attic. There, he rescues Aaron but was soon caught by Mr. Peterson. Angered that Quentin had gotten his son out, he grabs the former in a fit of rage and puts him a chokehold. After Quentin motions for Aaron to flee, Mr. Peterson locks Quentin in the cell before installing a number lock on the cell door. In addition, he installs a big red lock on the exit door so that Quentin could not escape with Aaron After Quentin escapes the attic, he once again has to avoid Mr. Peterson as he looks for a way to unlock the exit. After successfully unlocking the exit door, Quentin motions for Aaron to come with him, but before they could fully escape, they were once again caught by Mr. Peterson, who is now furious. Before he could stop them, he was suddenly crushed by a big crow statue, which hung from the ceiling and had come off its hinge. Aaron was horrified upon seeing his father, who reaches out to him, and although Quentin attempted to console and motion for Aaron to leave, the boy instead rushed back to his father to tend to him and the two embrace. After Quentin was knocked out by an unknown person and was being dragged away, he sees Aaron trying to free his father and Mr. Peterson coldly glares at Quentin one final time before the latter loses consciousness.

What became of Mr. Peterson is currently unknown as the game ended in a cliffhanger. However, according to a post-credits message, his story is not over, meaning Mr. Peterson will make a return in a future update/event.

Act 3[]

19 years later, Nicky Roth still has nightmares about Mr. Peterson ever since the day he escaped from the latter's house. When he moved back into Raven Brooks, after being evicted from his apartment, he finds Mr. Peterson's house in ruins. When Nicky fell asleep in his childhood home, he dreams of Mr. Peterson locking up Aaron in the basement of his house, which now appeared to be surreal in appearance, mainly created from Nicky's trauma. When Nicky wakes up and discovers Mr. Peterson's now-surreal house, he has to outsmart and evade the former to unlock the basement door once more, but before he can enter, Nicky must overcome his three fears from his childhood or the door at the end of the corridor will still be locked. Once Nicky has overcome his fears, he is about to enter the same corridor where he was caught by Mr. Peterson. Mr. Peterson catches Nicky, but Nicky uses his new powers from overcoming his fears and breaks free of Mr. Peterson's grasp, before entering the corridor and locking the door. If Nicky has overcome all his fears then the door at the end of the corridor will be unlocked, once Nicky enters he will be in a one-room house with a cardboard cut-out of Aaron.

However, a giant Mr. Peterson appears out of nowhere and destroys the house. Nicky must then find a way to get onto the house that is on the back of the giant Mr. Peterson. Once Nicky enters the house door, he must overcome his final fear, The Thing, which had grown to giant size. However, by defending his younger self, Nicky managed to defeat it, freeing himself of its influence. After being transported to a white void with an Exit Door and a house, Nicky can peers into the house's window, where he can see Mr. Peterson, who has locked himself in a room. On the other side of the barricaded door is the Shadow Man, who attempts to reach Mr. Peterson. Unlike Nicky, the latter cannot seem to overcome his guilt or fear of losing his last surviving family member and thus had to live with it for the rest of his life. Unable to help Mr. Peterson, Nicky leaves through the exit door and wakes up from his nightmare.

Hello Neighbor: Reset Day[]

Mr. Peterson goes missing, the town of Raven Brooks is going through time loops and reset days. But he is not really missing. The Guest shows up and kidnaps people. He then reveals to Piper Tillman that he is, in fact, Mr. Peterson.

Hello Neighbor: Waking Nightmare[]

In the prequel novel to the first Hello Neighbor game, Mr. Peterson searched for scraps for his basement in the remains of the Golden Apple Amusement Park. Ever since Mya's death and after having since locked up Aaron in his basement, Mr. Peterson lies to the public that his children are staying with an Aunt Lisa far away. However, Nicky Roth, who is best friends with Aaron Peterson, didn't believe Mr. Peterson's words. Having not seen his friend in four months, Nicky and his school friends went to investigate the disappearances of Aaron and his sister Mya, though the kids were unaware that the latter is dead. One day, as he chopped up some meat, Mr. Peterson discovered that Nicky is in his house, as the tape the latter had left on the front door had moved. Suspecting that Nicky is hiding in the closet, Mr. Peterson walked up to it but got distracted when his doorbell rang. Taking advantage of it, Nicky took the opportunity to steal a phone book that belong to the late Diane Peterson, Mr. Peterson's wife. It is then revealed that one of Nicky's friends had bribed a mailman to ring the doorbell to save Nicky. Learning that he has been tricked, Mr. Peterson went back to work in anger. He would later go to Nicky's house and get the phone book back.

Half a year later, Mr. Peterson, in a presumed act of revenge, sets up random scenarios around the neighborhood and successfully tricks the people of Raven Brooks into believing that Nicky was responsible, and the latter ended up getting blamed for Mr. Peterson's scenarios, and Nicky ended losing many of his friends. One night, Nicky climbed up a tree to find Aaron but Mr. Peterson figured out on how the boy had entered his house and proceeded to chop down the tree.

Hello Bendy[]

NOTE: This is non-canon to both the Hello Neighbor and Bendy franchises.

The Hello Neighbor made a Halloween crossover with the Bendy and the Ink Machine franchise called Hello Bendy. In this special DLC, Peterson replaces the Ink Demon and Sammy Lawrence. The music that plays when the Ink Demon chases after Henry Stein, is also replaced by Mr. Peterson's Chase Theme.

Personality[]

Mr. Peterson, in the past, started off as an oddball but he had a passion for designing and coming up with ideas for theme parks. He was once a loving family man until his wife Diane was critically injured in a car accident and when she died in the hospital, Mr. Peterson went into depression and became less social with anyone. This went on until his son Aaron began bullying his sister Mya out of anger, mainly because he was also depressed. This caused Mr. Peterson to angrily snap and send his son to his room. After Mya was accidentally fell to her death, he began taking extreme measures to ensure the safety of Aaron, who now became his last surviving family member, and after locking his son up in his basement, this caused Mr. Peterson's personality to change, and he became mentally unstable and unhinged.

He is also very protective of his basement, locking it up with a key and doing his best to hide the key from Nicky. Once Nicky goes too far into the basement, Mr. Peterson decides that Nicky knows too much and kidnaps him instead of kicking him out. It seems he is also not above torturing children, as Nicky seems battered and beaten at the beginning of Act 2, and even threateningly stares at Nicky before closing the gate.

He was once a family loving man until he was devastated when his wife died from a car accident and his daughter was pushed to death by his son, Aaron (which was an accident). He was only locking his son Aaron up as punishment for the accidentally murder upon his daughter.

Trivia[]

  • In Alpha 2 of Hello Neighbor, on the bottom of Mr. Peterson's shoe is the number 666, the Number of the Beast, in Alpha 3, this was changed to a W; however, the 666 has led to many theories that Mr. Peterson has done satanic rituals to attempt reviving his family.
  • Mr. Peterson and his family are Jewish.
  • His name and the fact that he is an amusement park designer was revealed from the books.
  • The Prototype and Alpha 1 versions of Hello Neighbor, is the only time where Mr. Peterson is shown to kill the player, as he buried them alive.
  • It is revealed that in the book Hello Neighbor: Reset Day that Mr. Peterson is the Guest.
    • However, with Hello Neighbor VR: Search and Rescue, it has been confirmed that the Guest is not human, and is a entity of sorts. So it is implied the Guest possessed Mr. Peterson.
  • The ominous music that plays in the first Hello Neighbor game when Mr. Peterson chases Nicky Roth is reminiscent of the Jaws theme.
