Threat
At first, Mr. Smith is a mysterious figure who the protagonists, Charlie and Louis, are ordered to deliver $50,000 to for an unknown reason. They are at first adamant to complete the task but after they inadvertently lose the cash during horseplay with an unconscious kangaroo and are unsuccessful in retrieving it, they retreat to a bar where Louis calls Smith, hoping for leniency. Smith, however, is furious and accuses the two of stealing the money and threatens to "chop them into snags and feed them to the crocs" if the money isn't given to him immediately.
Mr. Smith calls Salvatore Maggio about what happened causing him to send Frankie Lombardo to look for them.
Attack
Subsequent attempts to retrieve the money fail and Smith begins to viciously track the two down, knocking out their bush plane pilot friend Blue in the process. After raiding Blue's headquarters where he destroyed the equipment and bound and gagged Blue's worker, Smith and his two men found Blue who he mistook for the rescue party. They intimidate the answer on where Charlie and Louis went out of him and then knocked him out.
Smith and his two henchmen eventually find and capture the friends, greedily demanding the money but, true to their word, it is not there. Smith, feeling at his wit's end has the group (joined by their collaborator, Jessie) separated to all be killed individually. Charlie and Louis are dragged away by his thugs, while Smith personally kidnaps Jessie in a last ditch effort to find the money. To his surprise, however, Charlie and Louis turn the tables on him and his men, stealing their shotgun and holding them at gunpoint. When Charlie orders Smith to drop his knife, Smith is unfazed and begins to ask Charlie if he has ever held a gun or killed another human, and what he really does to make him so brave. Charlie answers all the questions honestly, ignoring Louis's protests, but he is still able to intimidate Smith into dropping his knife. Frankie appear with his men and turn their guns on Charlie but a contract dispute erupts into a massive brawl, which allows the three to escape. Frankie then violently overpowers Smith and knocks him out.
It is revealed that the money was intended as payment for Smith to kill Charlie and Louis. This makes the two friends realize that if Louis had not put the money in his jacket, and the jacket on the kangaroo, they would have delivered the money to Smith, and he would have killed them. Smith is among those who are arrested by the authorities.
