~ Mr. Sugden as he kicks off the football game. |
Mr. Sugden is a minor antagonist in the 1969 film Kes.
He was portrayed by the late Brian Glover, who also portrayed Mr. Rottweiler in Bottom and General Douglas in 1942: A Love Story.
Biography[]
Mr Sugden is a strict P.E teacher at the school Billy Casper attends. He sees himself as the next Bobby Charlton as evidenced in a P.E session in which the class are playing football. He often uses the session as a front to succeed in his Manchester United fantasies (the opposing team decides to be Tottingham Hot Spurs to avoid color clash). As the game kicks off a member of the rival team scores. Mr Sugden (performing as player and referee) reprimands Billy, whom he appointed goalkeeper, by violently throwing the hard ball at Billy's face accusing him of slack work. Later on after a fair tackle, Mr Sugden falls onto the ground. Enraged he orders a penalty which he scores successfully. After he himself tackles a child from the opposing team, said child starts slagging him off behind his back which results in the tyrannical teacher barring him off the pitch. Mr. Sugden's Manchester United fantasy falls apart after several of his teammates, who aren't as enthusiastic as him, start doing their own things like happy slap games (which Mr Sugden breaks up by slapping a student in the face). To further anger him, Billy Casper starts to perform circus tricks on the goal posts. The rival team wins the game and Mr Sugden is furious with Billy, who had previously tried to get out of these PE lessons for some time.
