Mr. Whisper is the main antagonist of the stand-alone comic mini-series Batman: Gothic. He is a former monk who made a deal with the Devil for a long life, but now seeks to bargain all of Gotham's souls to regain the right to his own soul while maintaining his own immortal body.
History
Three centuries ago in Australia, Brother Manfred, the man that would become Mr. Whisper, was a monk who was overwhelmed with pride. One day, he saw that a fellow monk who believed sin was actually a way to salvation; interested, he decided to embrace a sinful lifestyle by making a mockery of God via worshipping sin, even corrupting his fellow monks where he would rape and sacrifice the innocent nuns for his own sick pleasure with the most pure being burnt to the stake. When he had the first signs of a plague, instead of traditional prayer or attempting to redeem himself, immediately asked for the Devil to make him immortal. The Devil agreed to give him an unnaturally long life of three hundred years with an immortal body so that nothing could harm him nor would he age but that once that time was up the man's soul would be his to which the monk eagerly agreed. Eventual the temple was flooded which killed all but Mr. Whisper. Over the centuries the former monk searched for ways to escape paying his soul while also maintaining his immortality all while seemingly repeating his crimes while doing so. Eventually he went to America where he helped build part of Gotham namely his own cathedral with occult symbols that were meant to steal and seal the souls with the eventual goal of trading all of Gotham to the Devil in return for his own soul and to keep the immortal body.
As a cover, he became an teacher at a private school under the name Winchester, where he would often abuse the students. Despite his acts, they were covered up by the school, and the man would secretly kill at least seven children. Eventually, he was forced to retire by the school when it became clear how evil he truly was. Disgusted with his cruelty, the mob tried to kill him but to no avail. When killing the man became impossible the mob tried to get rid of him by tying an anchor to him before then dumping in the harbor which they believed drowned him.
However, twenty years later, he resurfaced and sought revenge by hunting the men who killed him while leaving letters of poetry as a mock warning that they were next. As he killed each through a different method along with any other poor soul in his way, Mr. Whisper took joy in both it and his plan coming to fruition though this lead. Batman immediately recognized him while Whisper was able to deduce the former’s identity. After Batman was able to find his place of origin based off an old recording of Mr. Whisper's voice from the old school which led to him finding the truth of Whisper's past along with the fact the nun who was burned alive was barred from the afterlife until Whisper's was dead. After luring Batman into a trap, Mr. Whisper goes on to state he was going to kill Bruce first while also confirming he is aware of Batman's secret identity. He rants that he had measured his own shadow and soul with some magic to make into a string in hopes he can use it to house his soul when it is returned as a way to secure his own immortality if his plan succeeds. Mr. Whisper also reveals he had used bodies of those effected with the ancient plague to make it far more deadly to where in less than a day it will kill all Gotham and with his cathedral harvest all the souls to where he can make the Devil such a deal that he can escape his fate right before it comes time to collect. After all this he leaves Batman to die and takes a woman with him to kill as he waits for the plague to be released.
However as he planned to kill the woman Batman arrives and saves her, which leads to a fight on a subway track. As they fight, Mr. Whisper is run over. However, due to his immortality, Whisper is able to rise and continue with the plan to have both himself and Batman run over even mocking Batman that he'll be fine unlike Batman, however Batman is able to throw Mr. Whisper into the train and escape. Defeated and presumably still confident he can escape the Devil soon Mr. Whisper returns to his apartment only to find the woman in there. The woman reveals that she is the Devil and that given he tried to cheat him the Devil can take him one day early; desperate, Whisper immediately begs God to spare him and grant him immortality. The Devil then points out that Whisper was being a hypocrite given he turned on God long ago. With this, the Devil decided takes Whisper's soul to Hell, though later sends Batman Whisper's heart and the string so that he can free the nun's soul from her unjust fate thus putting a permanent end to Whisper's reign of terror.
Appearance
Mr. Whisper is described by Batman to be a man in his forties and appears to be average height possibly a little taller. Whisper's seems to be in fairly healthy condition and wears a brown suit with a white dress shirt, red overcoat and has black hair.
Personality
Mr. Whisper is a man who likes to present himself in a stern but polite man that appreciates the finer things in life. Underneath the façade, however, he is a cruel and sadistic man that cares for nothing more than his own life. He shows this by mockingly offering one criminal who was beaten, trapped and covered in gasoline a cigarette which he used to light him on fire before leaving him to die in agony. With nearly every kill Mr. Whisper leaves poetry to taunt his soon to be victim that he is coming for them. While he does fight and do most of the dirty work himself he seems to do so as he knows nothing can harm or kill him, this is emphasized on how when mortal he seemed to have his fellow monks do most the work for him and immediately made a deal with the Devil to cheat death implying he is a coward at heart. This is further reinforced by when finally confronted by the Devil he tries to beg God to save him despite previously making a mockery of God by worshiping sin to which even the Devil called out on the hypocrisy.
Powers and Abilities
Mr. Whisper due to his deal cannot be killed or harmed by any traditional means and will immediately heal from any wound no matter how sever. It also seems that due to his immortality he can not feel any pain or bare minimum has a greatly enhanced tolerance given even being hit by a train, chopped with an axe or thrown off a building does little to slow him down. Mr. Whisper is also shown to be knowledgeable in the occult and magic although more in the terms of rituals not in manners of defense as he only is shown using it in the form of his cathedral and the string that was to be used to hold his soul. Outside all of this he is also shown to be strong and skilled enough to hold his own against Batman when needed.
