Mrs. Baker is a minor antagonist of the 2021 Netflix series A Tale & Grimm, and the main antagonist of the first episode.

She was voiced by Nicole Byer.

Biography[]

Not much is known about Mrs. Baker's past, except that she once had a child, and while he was cradling it, she had the strange idea of eating him alive. She turned it into a pie and after eating it, took a taste for human flesh. She brought many children to her house made of sweets, made them eat until they got fat enough and put them in her oven to cook and eat them. She is also the baker of the king of a certain kingdom, who is also the father of Hansel and Gretel.

One day, she is visited by the two children who fled from their parents. She is delighted to have the two children visit, saying they are "delicious" and brandishing her hatchet. She cuts a part of her fence made of barley sugar and offers it to the children.

After bringing them into her house, she has them sit at her table and asks them what brings them to her home. Hansel and Gretel tell her that their parents have beheaded them and that they are looking for a place to eat lots of chocolate cake. Mrs. Baker brings them chocolate cake, pancakes, and a lot of meat. The woman tells them to eat as they please and continually brings them food until Hansel and Gretel fall asleep because of their gluttony.

Then, Mrs. Baker brings them to a bedroom and throws them in beds. As she leaves, she assures them that no one will come to eat them until they are full. Hansel throws his shoe which falls on the doorknob of a cupboard which opens and reveals lots of children's shoes. One of these even has a remnant of a child's foot with a bone sticking out.

The next morning, the fat woman brings them their breakfast and encourages them to eat as much as possible because their bodies can't get fat by themselves. The children begin to eat, but quickly fall asleep again because of the big quantity of food already eaten. That's when Mrs. Baker decides they are full and ready to be made into pies.

She wakes up Hansel, pretending to need him in the kitchen. Hansel accepts. The lady takes him in her arms, brings him into the stove, lets him in and asks him to tell her when it is hot enough to cook him and Gretel. Hansel asks how he will know if the oven is hot enough and Mrs. Baker tells him that he will be dead and that the smell of cooked meat will be enough to convince her. So she starts her oven by putting wood in her fire. However, thanks to a leftover pork chop, the young boy managed to fool Mrs. Baker into believing Hansel is cooked. Therefore she opens the oven while mimicking a pig, but Hansel isn't there much to her surprise. Having gone out through the little trapdoor in the flue, Hansel pushes Mrs. Baker into her trap and locks her in her own oven.

Nevertheless, she manages to free herself because the oven's door does not have a latch. She manages to thwart the children's escape attempt and chases them back to their room. While searching for them, she claims that the reason Hansel and Gretel's parents beheaded them is because they never loved them. She then finds Hansel under a bed and lifts him into the air. Luckily for his brother, Gretel throws the rest of the child's foot at his face. As she backs up, she trips over what appears to be a chicken leg, defenestrating it, and she falls onto her fence. She dies instantly as her body is pierced.

Her spirit gets out of the corpse and is confused by what is going on. The Devil then appears and touchs her with his finger, teleporting her to Hell. In there, she meets Hansel again while torturing herself and apologizes for what she did to him and his sister.

At the end of the series, she is promoted as an assistant cook working for the Devil's grandmother and she is happy with this new role.

Personality[]

Even when Mrs. Baker tries to appear loving and kind, her dark side appears. She can hardly seem to hide her taste for human flesh. She has a sadistic side as well, taunting Hansel about how his parents hated him, leading them to behead him and Gretel.

In Hell, she seemingly has some remorse for the wrong things she did to Hansel. She doesn't express remorse for all the other children she cooked alive and eaten, however.
