~ Mrs Baylock to Damien in The Omen (2006). |
Mrs. Baylock is the secondary antagonist of the 1976 horror film The Omen, as well as its 2006 remake. She is a Satanist sent to watch over Damien Thorn, the Antichrist.
In the original 1976 film, she was portrayed by the late Billie Whitelaw. In the remake, she was portrayed by Mia Farrow.
Biography[]
Original Film[]
Damien's adoptive parents Robert and Katherine Thorn hire Mrs. Baylock as Damien's new nanny - after the previous one hangs herself. Unbeknownst to them, Mrs. Baylock has been sent to them by Satan to protect Damien and train him to follow in Satan’s footsteps. When Katherine gets pregnant, Damien starts becoming jealous - and Mrs. Baylock stands back and callously watches, as Damien runs her off a balcony with his tricycle.
After Katherine and Robert discover that their own child was murdered, so that Damien would be placed in their care (Mrs. Baylock herself most likely having had a hand in that child's murder somewhere along the line), they soon become convinced that their adoptive son is the Antichrist. Mrs. Baylock later appears to Katherine in the night and kills her, by throwing her out of a window.
When Robert realizes he has no choice but to kill Damien, he later returns to England in order to do so. But, Mrs. Baylock suddenly attacks him before he can - and shouts to Damien to run away. After a struggle between Robert and Mrs. Baylock through the house, he kills her by stabbing her in the neck with a carving fork.
Remake[]
In the remake, Mrs. Baylock kills Katherine by injecting her IV tube with air, causing her to suffer an embolism.
Mrs. Baylock's death scene is also different in the remake. When Robert returns to his house to kill Damien, she attacks him with a knife in order to defend the child. They engage in a brutal struggle, but Robert still manages to grab Damien and get him inside his car. Mrs. Baylock charges at the car, knife drawn, but Robert runs her over, killing her.
Trivia[]
- In a deleted scene in the original film, Mrs. Baylock survives being stabbed in the neck and chases Robert out to his car. Robert then kills her by running her over with the car.
- Mia Farrow, who portrayed Mrs. Baylock, also starred in Rosemary's Baby; a film which also focuses on a child who is revealed to be the Antichrist.
- Billie Whitelaw, the actress who played Mrs. Baylock in the original film, is also a main antagonist in Hot Fuzz, where Sergeant Angel calls her "hag" in a running joke; this is a reference to The Omen.
- The name "Baylock" appears to be a combination of two demons in the Old Testament: Ba'al (often pronounced "Bayl" and Moloch, with the last four letters pronounced "lock".
