Mrs. Dubois is the main antagonist of the 2020 comedy film Hubie Halloween. She is the protective, though homicidal, mother of Hubie Dubois.

She was portrayed by June Squibb.

Biography[]

Mrs. Dubois is the widowed mother of main protagonist Hubie Dubois, who was preparing for another year of creating a safe Halloween for his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts. She was shown greeting her son before warning him about the relentlessness of bullies; adding that he should stand up for himself against them. The film established that Hubie was on the receiving end of bullying and pranks from Mr. Landolfa, Micheal Mundi (Hubie's co-worker at a local deli), and Lester Hennessey and his wife (both former classmates of Hubie's).

The events of the night saw Mike abducted in the midst of his prank on Hubie, with the kidnapper wearing a jack-o-lantern mask. The Hennesseys and Landolfa were also abducted; all the while, Hubie suspected that the culprit was his next door neighbor, Walter Lambert, who was believed to be a werewolf; only for Walter to be revealed as a mental patient. The townspeople all pointed their fingers at Hubie, believing that he was getting payback against his tormentors, though Hubie's visit to the town's radio station revealed that a woman had been calling disc jockey Aurora and voicing her plans to show Hubie how much she loved him.

The discovery led Hubie to suspect Violet Valentine, Hubie's longtime friend from kindergarten, and a sting operation saw both Hubie and Violet reveal that they were in love with each other--with their admissions being interrupted by Hubie learning that the phone that called the station was at his mother's house. Hubie rushed to his home and found his mother seated in the living room and informing her son that she was unharmed, after which Hubie spotted a jack-o-lantern mask next to her phone. It was at this moment that Hubie realized that his mother was the culprit, and the reveal was cemented when he heard her victims screaming for help.

As it turned out, Mrs. Dubois not only made the calls to the station, but she had stalked each of her victims as they pranked Hubie. She took Mike from the corn maze, both Hennesseys after their prank at a drive-in, and Landolfa at a haunted house, while revealing to Hubie that she had committed the abductions to protect her son. After tying them up to separate posts, Mrs. Dubois announced her plan to burn them at the stake; rushing to douse them in gasoline after hearing police sirens. As Hubie watched his mother light the match, he thought about how each of his mother's victims had tormented him, but it was Violet's statement that Hubie always thought of others that led him to use the last splash of soup from his thermos to extinguish the match in mid-air and save the victims.

The police arrived and held Mrs. Dubois at gunpoint, while the victims hurled insults at Hubie and screamed at him to untie them. At that moment, Mrs. Dubois lashed out at her victims for insulting Hubie even after he had just saved them, and wondered why they picked on him, with Landolfa stating that it was because Hubie was "so Hubie." Mrs. Dubois pointed out her son's good qualities and stated that the quartet was threatened by Hubie, prompting them to reveal their insecurities and their envy of Hubie's courage to be himself, which was followed by Mrs. Dubois expressing her pride in her son's ability to face their insults and take them with stride, while informing Hubie that he didn't have to be scared anymore and that she loved him, right before she escaped into the night. The film's epilogue set one year later implies that she has become a local boogeyman.
