| “ | He was shocked, and he died. I can imagine how frightened he was. I mean, how could he expect to see something like that? Yes... his looks really changed, but not in the way he expected. He passed away soon after seeing the result... It's a shame, because... I found the real beauty in his transformed body. | „ |
| ~ Mrs. Kawabe describing her husband's death, Flesh-Colored Horror. |
Mrs. Kawabe is the main antagonist of the Junji Ito horror story Flesh-Colored Horror. She is the widowed wife of an alchemist who had attempted to find an elixer of life. During one of his attempts to do so, a freak accident occured, where his skin was seperated from the rest of his body. Following this, he died from shock when he discovered his mutilated body.
When his wife had discovered his corpse, she had come to fetishize his transformation, deeming it as an "ultimate form of beauty", performing the procedure on herself, tricking her sister Maya into it, and experimenting on her son when she runs out of the chemical that her husband created.
Biography[]
The wife of a chemist, Mrs. Kawabe became a widow after her husband, who had been seeking to create an Elixir of Life, ended up dying of shock after finding that the chemical had instead separated his skin from his musculature underneath. However, far from being terrified or disgusted by what she saw, Mrs. Kawabe became driven to do the same thing to herself, her sister Maya, and her son, Chikara, as she believed bare muscles to be the state of true beauty.
While Mrs. Kawabe and Maya were able to survive not having their skin by fashioning it into skin suits that would be kept in saline to prevent them from drying out and dying from dehydration - thus preventing them too from meeting a similar fate - they had ran out of the chemical, and, unable to recreate the formula, began repeatedly experimenting on Chikara to try to separate his skin, but the process caused him great pain, and left him in an unnerving state that terrified other children around him.
Mrs. Kawabe decided to take action against Chikara's kindergarten teacher, Momoko Takigawa, after going on a stroll without her skin, flashing her terrifying appearance to a man who ran away in terror. She then struck Takigawa over the head with a rock just after she had learned from Maya some of the truth behind Chikara's appearance.
After revealing the true story about how her husband died to an abducted and restrained Takigawa, Kawabe was forced to reveal her true appearance after she accidentally dropped a bottle of what she thought was acid on her leg, revealing her bare muscles underneath. Eventually, she realised that she had been tricked by Maya, who had been deliberately sabotaging the chemical by replacing the acid with ordinary water to try to save Chikara.
Furious, Mrs. Kawabe began arguing with Maya, only to pause when Chikara briefly left and returned with the Acid. However, rather than give it to her, he sided with Maya, kicking the tank containing his mother's skin over and destroying it with the Acid. In a homicidal panic, Mrs. Kawabe tore off Maya's skin, revealing that she too had received the formula, but Chikara intervened, ripping her calf muscles in half and leaving her unable to stand.
Believing that she would now die without a significant portion of her skin, Maya tearfully told Takigawa that she had been deceived by her own sister, and that she never truly wanted to use the medicine. Horrified by the scene, Takigawa promptly fainted.
While Mrs. Kawabe's ultimate fate is never elaborated on, it is highly likely that without her skin, she did not survive for much longer afterwards, ultimately dying of dehydration.
