~ Mrs. Kawamata refuses to help Aubrey end the curse. |
Mrs. Kawamata is a major antagonist in The Grudge 2.
She is responsible for the titular Grudge being born because she was an exorcist, an itako in Japanese, and she fed her daughter with other people demons. Mrs. Kawamata was the mother of Kayako Saeki and Naoko, the mother-in-law of Takeo Saeki, and the grandmother of Toshio Saeki. She was very old by the time of The Grudge 2.
She was portrayed by Kim Miyori.
Biography[]
Mrs. Kawamata was cruel as a mother, she would make her daughter Kayako eat evil spirits by sucking out the blood of possessed victims and giving the blood to Kayako to drink. Kayako's other sister, Naoko, was made to watch these horrific exorcisms, which made Naoko frightened of her mother and Kayako hate her mother.
Mrs. Kawamata was living a reclusive life in an old hovel of a cottage when Aubrey visits her, having heard of her from Eason, a journalist investigating the paranormal. When Eason is killed by Kayako, Aubrey decides to end it and goes to see Mrs. Kawamata, who refuses to help Aubrey, telling her that a chain of events has been set into motion which can never go away. She also states that the curse will take over the world.
Suddenly, Mrs. Kawamata sees her daughter's ghost in the room with her, invisible to Aubrey, and Mrs. Kawamata screams and falls backwards, trying to escape, but her daughter's ghost kneels down before her and sucks her life out of her. So Kayako claims her mother and avenges her cruelty to her and her sister.
Trivia[]
- Despite of her being exclusive to The Grudge series, Mrs. Kawamata's Ju-On franchise counterpart does exist as revealed in the official novel written by Kei Ohishi. The difference, however, is that the latter is simply an ordinary, yet neglectful mother instead of an abusive exorcist in the American adaptation.
