NOTE: For her daughter, see: Kim Wexler.

Hey, kiddo, relax. You got away with it.
~ Mrs. Wexler to her daughter Kim.

Mrs. Wexler is a minor antagonist in the crime drama series Better Call Saul, the prequel series to Breaking Bad.

She's the neglectful and irresponsible mother of Kim Wexler, which helps explain Kim's hyper-responsible personality as an adult - and eventually the opposite when she is drawn to the scheming of Jimmy "Saul Goodman" McGill. She only appears in two childhood flashbacks.

She was portrayed by Beth Hoyt.

Biography[]

Background[]

Not much is known about Kim Wexler's mother, who lived in Nebraska for some time. Kim never knew her father, and says her family was poor and never owned a home. She remembers her mother waking her up in the middle of the night so they could leave quickly before getting kicked out. Kim's mother was neglectful and likely had a drinking problem, though she wasn't completely uncaring.

Better Call Saul[]

Season 5[]

A flashback shows teenage Kim waiting outside her school in Nebraska with her cello. When her mother finally shows up, Kim hesitantly gets near the car after seeing her mother has been drinking. Even though her mother insists she's fine to drive, Kim decides to walk home instead. Her mother yells that "she never listens" and drives off.

Season 6[]

In a scene from 1984 Nebraska, young Kim sits in a store manager's office. The manager brings in Kim's mother after catching Kim trying to steal earrings and a necklace. Kim's mother acts like she's angry and offers to pay for the items using Kim's allowance, but the manager lets them go without charges. Outside, Kim's mother drops the act and shows she doesn't really care, even pulling out another pair of earrings she stole herself to give to Kim, and tells her she's lucky she didn't get in trouble. Kim stares blankly out the window as they drive home.

Trivia[]

  • The earrings and necklace Kim wears throughout the series are the same ones shoplifted by her and her mother. She permanently stops wearing them after leaving Jimmy in late 2004.
  • In an interview, Rhea Seehorn (Kim) said that the scene of Kim and her mother trying to pick her up at school reminded her of the parking garage scene from the pilot episode of Better Call Saul, where Kim fixes up the garbage can that Jimmy dented and knocked over. Rhea said that Kim was the type of person "who was probably raised by an addict, because she cleans up other people's messes, and she doesn't ever want to depend on anyone but herself."
