~ Mrs. White stammers out her confession |
Mrs. White is a major character in the 1985 film Clue, being a supporting antagonist in Ending C. She is the widow of an illusionist and a nuclear physicist, who was being blackmailed by Mr. Boddy because of the mysterious circumstances of her husband's death.
She was portrayed by the late Madeline Kahn.
Biography[]
Prior to the events of the film, Mrs. White was married to a nuclear physicist, involved with the same top secret fusion bomb experiments as Colonel Mustard. Following a loud argument with her husband in which he threatened to kill her in public (that is, he threatened, in public, to kill her) he was found dead in his home with both his head and his genitals cut off. This was Mrs. White's second husband who had died, as she had also previously been married to a stage magician who disappeared mysteriously. Still, Mrs. White was cleared of suspicion as she had an airtight alibi for the time of his death, having spent all evening out at the movies.
Mr. Boddy claimed to have found evidence that Mrs. White had killed one or both of her husbands and blackmailed her. Though Mrs. White insisted on her own innocence, she paid the blackmail nonetheless as she didn't want any scandal attached to her. She was one of six people invited to Mr. Boddy's mansion to discuss their blackmail.
Ending C[]
In Ending C, Mrs. White quickly recognized Mr. Boddy's maid Yvette as her late husband's mistress. After Colonel Mustard suggested that they all split up into pairs to search the house, White separated from her partner, turned off the lights, and killed Yvette by strangling her with the rope.
This is revealed by Wadsworth in the end, before he reveals himself as the true Mr. Boddy, who set all of this up to get rid of his informants and generate even more blackmail material at the same time. Wadsworth is then shot and killed by Mr. Green, who is an undercover FBI agent. Green then opens the mansion doors so the FBI can come in and arrest everyone, including White.
Other Endings[]
In Ending A, Yvette is killed by Miss Scarlett, and in Ending B she is killed by Mrs. Peacock. Mrs. White doesn't commit any murders in those two endings aside from the implied murders of her two husbands which happened prior to the events of the film. It is not confirmed if Yvette was sleeping with Mrs. White's husband in those endings either.

Trivia[]
- Mrs. White's nonsensical, stammering confession to killing Yvette was almost entirely ad-libbed. In the script she was only supposed to say "Yes, I did it. I killed Yvette. I hated her." Madeline Khan asked director John Lynn if she could change the line, but the other actors were not told beforehand; their bewildered reactions seen in the film were entirely real.
