| “ | It's normal for children to tease. It's not normal for them to bite! Clearly it's because of how he's being raised. In my opinion, a dog can never be a suitable parent to a little boy. | „ |
| ~ Grunion's most famous quote.
|
| “ | I'll be coming to your home tomorrow evening to conduct an investigation. If I discover that you are, in any way, an unfit parent... I will see to it Sherman is removed from your custody. (aggressively sharpens her pencil with a pencil sharpener before blowing on it) PERMANENTLY. I hope I made myself clear. | „ |
| ~ Grunion threatens Peabody by telling him if he doesn't prove he is a good parent and his house is deemed unfit if she finds out, she will have Sherman removed from his custody.
|
| “ | I don't know WHAT just happened here... but I know it was WRONG! This boy is coming with ME! | „ |
| ~ Grunion after inadvertently merging Peabody and Sherman's cosmic doubles and about to try to take Sherman away; and also her villainous breakdown and most infamous quote. |
Edwina Grunion, simply better known as Ms. Grunion, is the main antagonist of DreamWorks' 28th full-length animated feature film Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which is based on the “Peabody's Improbable History” segments of the 1959-64 comedy television series The Adventure of Rocky and Buckwinkle and Friends.
She is a corrupt, strict, and cat-loving school counselor and Children's Services agent who often looks down on Mr. Peabody due to his parent-like relations with the child Sherman, as she sees that dogs raising human children is inappropriate. No matter how much she tries that, though, it'll always end up in failure. She is also the arch-nemesis of both Mr. Peabody and Sherman, the titular duo.
She was voiced by Allison Janney, who also played Gladys Sharp in Over the Hedge (a previous DreamWorks animated feature), Prudy Pingleton in Hairspray, Mother in Lost, 2nd Dimension Charlene Doofenshmirtz in Phineas and Ferb, Madge Nelson in Minions, Mr. Barron's Dr. Golan form in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Margaux Needler in Addams Family, LaVona Golden in I, Tonya, and Colonel Howell in The Creator.
Biography[]
Ms. Grunion is first introduced when Mr. Peabody is meeting with Principal Purdy about Sherman biting his devious classmate Penny Peterson (who became jealous of him for proving to be academically better than her) in the lunchroom after she teases him nonstop, calling him a dog, throwing his sandwich on the floor, stealing his dog whistle, and eventually restraining him in a chokehold. She walks out of an office in the side of the Principal's office, and introduces herself to Peabody, telling him that she's a agent from the Bureau of Child Safety and Protection, Purdy explains to Peabody that he's required by law to contact Child Safety and Protection in case of any incidents. She is shown to have more power over the principal and is determined to have the adoption agency reclaim Sherman from Mr. Peabody. She doesn't acknowledge Penny's bullying, cruelly silenced Purdy when he tries to tell Peabody about Penny, and blames Sherman's actions on Peabody being a dog, and tells him that she is coming to his home tomorrow evening to conduct an investigation and interview his guardianship of Sherman, threatening to have him removed from his custody, if he doesn't prove that he is a good parent and his house is deemed unfit for the boy.
She was mentioned a few times before the climax when Peabody believes that Sherman and Penny will resolve their differences before Grunion arrives at his house, Penny asking Peabody if he was a great parent, then why was Grunion going to take away Sherman, then, Sherman demands to know why Peabody didn't tell him that Grunion was planning to take him away, and when Peabody said he was going to charm Grunion when he gets back to the present.
Later, when she arrives at Peabody's house and tries to apprehend Sherman, Peabody tries to hypnotize her but to no avail as she was able to withstand his hypnosis technique, although accidentally hypnotize the past Sherman instead, she is confronted by two Shermans and Peabodys, who are unable to adequately explain the bizarre situation, as Sherman and Mr. Peabody independently return to when they are already in the present. Grunion immediately declares the home unfit and seizes both Shermans despite Penny's protests that she was at fault. But when she is trying to take both Shermans, she accidentally disrupts the space-time continuum when the copies touch each other, when the two Mr. Peabodys they to stop this, both Mr. Peabodys and Shermans merge, and causes a time paradox in space-time continuum. Now that her suspicions are confirmed, Grunion pulls Sherman away again and Mr. Peabody, enraged at the sight of her hurting his son, momentarily reverts to instinct, snarls in rage, and bites her arm violently right in front of Penny and her parents.
Now with an excuse to call the New York Police Department to have Peabody euthanized as a dangerous animal, Mr. Peabody, Sherman and Penny flee in the WABAC. However, thanks to Grunion accidentally disrupting space-time continuum, a time vortex appears and various historical figures and objects are pulled into the present, causing WABAC to crash and Mr. Peabody is about be taken away by animal control to euthanized him for assaulting Grunion. At this, Sherman protests, saying it's all his fault, and says he'd rather be a dog to be as good a person as Peabody. Moved by this, every historical figure agrees, along with Penny and her parents, and US Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Bill Clinton declare their support for Peabody's legal custody of Sherman.
Afterwards, Peabody and Sherman repair the time vortex, but Grunion proclaims that one day Mr. Peabody will make a wrong move and that then, she will get him. King Agamemnon grabs her as he is taken back to his time, taking her as well, preventing any chances of Grunion getting revenge.
In a post-credits scene, she is shown with a new nicer personality when she marries King Agamemnon at the Trojan Horse.
Personality[]
Ms. Grunion is a pompous, selfish, manipulative and untrustworthy woman. She does not care for Sherman's well being, as she actually wants to ruin Sherman and Mr. Peabody's lives by separating them and making them miserable. She is also very xenophobic against dogs, being against Peabody being Shermans' adoptive father all because the former is a dog, even to the point that she is willing to go as far as to try to get his reputation ruined with a false accusation and trying to get him arrested before getting him taken away as a “dangerous animal” and to get him executed by the Animal Control via euthanization just for biting her on the arm for harming Sherman, which she clearly deserves. Despite her job, she finds bullying okay while claiming that retaliation is not, making her a hypocrite as a result.

Trivia[]
- Her first name "Edwina" is never mentioned in the film.
- She is the second DreamWorks Animation film to have Allison Janney voice a character, after Gladys Sharp in Over the Hedge. Coincidentally, both of them have the same issue of dealing with animals.
- Ms. Grunion doesn't interact with Sherman and Penny until the climax.
- In the storybook version of the movie, Washington has Grunion arrested, rather than taken back to the past.
- Ms. Grunion is the fifth DreamWorks Animation villain to be a female antagonist, following Mrs. Tweedy from Chicken Run, Eris from Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, the Fairy Godmother from Shrek 2 and Chantel DuBois from Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted.
- Grunion is also the first female main antagonist to come from an original DreamWorks CGI film. Her CGI predecessors, the Fairy Godmother and Chantel DuBois, both originated from sequels.
- Ms. Grunion is a dark parallel to Penny. Both female characters have heavily looked down upon Mr. Peabody and Sherman's familial ties since they both think that it's unsuitable for dogs like Mr. Peabody himself to raise human children. However, once Penny gets to know the titular duo better, she later warms herself up to them, learns from her own mistakes and begins to support Mr. Peabody's parenthood with Sherman. Meanwhile, Grunion refuses to acknowledge that Mr. Peabody has been a loving father to Sherman, which proves to be her downfall. Had Penny never realized just how caring and intuitive Mr. Peabody was to Sherman, she would've ended up like Grunion. They're also both bitten for harming Sherman, Penny to Sherman by putting him in a chokehold and Grunion by roughly grabbing his arm and gets bitten by Peabody for it.
