Shadows crept over Mulligan and Thornton! Inside them. They grinned.
~ The Deputies turned into a Takens.
Bright Falls f-cking finest!
~ Taken Mulligan to Saga Anderson.

Deputy Mulligan is a minor character in the Alan Wake franchise.

He is one of the Bright Falls sheriff's deputies, along with his partner Thornton, who was present in the incident in 2010. Thirteen years later, he become a member of the Cult of the Tree, for protect the townspeople from the Dark Presence, until he and his partner became taken after accidentally killing a innocent woman.

In Alan Wake, he was voiced by Bill Buell. In Alan Wake II, he was voiced and motion-captured by Mark Heenehan. And in the prequel miniseries Bright Falls, he was portrayed by Roberts Peters.

Biography[]

Background[]

Nothing is known about Mulligan's past, but he was born around the 1960s in Bright Falls and became the town's deputy sheriff. He later became friends with fellow deputy Thornton, who wasn't a native of the Washington town and the two became inseparable despite their frequent bickering.

Bright Falls[]

When Jake Fischer visits the Oh Deer Diner, he sees Shel Dyck throwing rocks at a light pole and Mulligan tries to stop him, demanding that he stop, but instead he throws rocks at him too. He tried to arrest her and put him in the back of her car, before she bit his hand. He then enters the restaurant, he shows his bleeding hand to Rose and asks her for a towel to stop the bleeding.

Later, he investigates the mysterious disappearance of Sam Smith, going to the Mountain Air Motel to ask if anyone had seen him. As Jake is the only current guest there, he visits his room and Mulligan sees that it has been completely destroyed, but is unaware that he destroyed his own room. Jake then comes up with an excuse for Mulligan, that he left the door open and a wild animal walked by. To Jake's surprise, Mulligan notes that the evidence points toward a large deer and shows him several telltale signs to back up his point. The deputy then comments offhandedly that he would have made a very good hunting trophy and that he can't wait to tell his friends about it. In the end he leaves, Mulligan not knowing that Jake was the cause of the damage.

Alan Wake[]

While Mulligan and Thornton has no physical appearance in the game, he is called by FBI agent Robert Nightingale to help in the search for Alan Wake, but expresses his distrust of the agent through the local police scanners and arrests Barry Wheeler and Rose Marigold.

He is later heard over a park ranger's radio ringing in an observation tower, suggesting that he call a doctor for Rose, who has been controlled by the Dark Presence. He is once again heard on the airwaves later when Pat Maine interviews him on the local radio station. He ignores most of Maine's questions in a evasive manner.

Joining the Cult[]

Prior to the events of the second game, Mulligan and Thornton joined the Cult of the Tree under the leadership of Ilmo and Jaakko Koskela to protect Bright Falls against the Dark Presence. Despite their good intentions, manuscript pages indicate that the deputies relished in the thrill and power they received as members of the cult. However, it's left ambiguous whatever Mulligan and Thornton's behavior was just their own doing or was influenced by the Return manuscript.

Alan Wake II[]

In 2023, Mulligan and Thornton are tasked to watch over Robert Nightingale's corpse until FBI agents Saga Anderson and Alex Casey arrived at the crime scene, but express apprehension of their involvement. Following Nightingale's return as a taken, Mulligan and Thornton accidently kill Monica Thompson while patrolling the woods at night, believing her to be a taken in the dark. Despite being guilt-ridden for their actions, the deputies decided to dump her body into the Huotari well at Coffee World to cover their crime. After failing to influence Ilmo, the Dark Presence turned Mulligan and Thornton into overlap guardians due to the wells' ties to the legend of the Huotari brothers.

With Scratch's manuscript of Return, Mulligan and Thornton stalked Saga as she visited her fictional home in Watery created by the story. Spotting Mulligan wearing a cult-deer mask, Anderson follows him and Thornton until entering the cult's headquarters at the Watery motorcycle club. The possessed deputies attempt to prevent Saga from obtaining the clicker, but she enters the overlap by finishing the club's parade float. Inside the overlap, Mulligan and Thornton battle Saga until they are killed, allowing her to obtain the clicker.
